Chesapeake Region President's Message and her husband John also attended the After Holiday Party. Rose Ann has some mighty large shoes to fill as Cheryl s energy is unstoppable! Now that it s the second month in as your new President, things have gotten interesting to say the least. Did you attend the After Holiday Party on the 13th? What a great venue Donna Brandt arranged along with the untiring help from Minta Miller. We are so fortunate to have had Claude Taylor as our immediate past President. The Executive Committee was pleased and honored to provide Claude with two gifts - a PCACHS embroidered jacket that reads Region President 2016 to 2017, and a beautiful wall plaque that included a mounted gavel, an engraved brass plaque and one of our grille badges. The inscription reads: In appreciation for your outstanding dedication and service for the years 2016 and 2017 as president of the Porsche Club of America, Chesapeake Region; Charted March 20, In addition to Claude, his lovely bride, Cheryl Taylor received an embroidered PCACHS jacket as an expression of our thanks for being the Zone 2 Representative for 2014 through Rose Ann Novotnak is our new Zone 2 Representation and she 8 On a sad note, I lost a dear friend to pancreatic cancer on January 11th and traveled south to Southport, NC for his funeral on the 18th. If nothing else, remember that time is short so enjoy that Porsche year -round! On the 24th we held our first Board Meeting of the year and reviewed everything from the 2018 Events Schedule, our current finances, Chesapeake Challenge 49 and each Committee requirements. We decided to move our planned March Social from the 14th to the 20th to coincide with the 57th Anniversary of our Chesapeake Region Charter, March 20, And before March rolls around, we have a number of exciting events planned for February, including an opportunity on the 10th to learn about ceramic coatings and films for your car s exterior, our annual Super Slot Car Night on the 17th along with PCA National s Techtactics East in Easton, PA, on the 17th, and our monthly Social at Carrabba s, Hunt Valley on the last day of the month, the 28th.

President's Message Last evening I attended, along with 250 members from the Chesapeake and Potomac Regions, the annual Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona Race viewing party hosted by Casey Parkin Porsche of Silver Spring. The event was held at Jailbreak Brewery in Laurel (wonderful crafted beer), and food was provided by T&J Waffles. Have you ever had barbeque beef brisket on a waffle? Once you do, there s no turning back. Wait, There s More! From Laurie Tarsia: The surprise of the evening was a beautiful white 2018? Porsche Panamera Sport Wagon sitting inside the brewery courtesy of Porsche Silver Spring. Here s what s planned for the next months: February 10 th Tech Committee, Ceramic Coatings and Films 14 th Valentine s Day, Don t forget your honey ladies 17 th Super Slot Car Night, Parkville Family Y of Maryland 17 th Tech Tactics East, PCA National Event, Porsche Training Facility, Easton, PA 28 th Social, Carrabba, Hunt Valley, MD March 3 rd New Member Party, Porsche of Silver Spring 4 th Home & Garden Show, MD Fairgrounds w/free Porsche area only parking 9 th Werks Reunion, PCA National Event, Amelia Island (9 th 11 th ) 14 th PCACHS Volunteer Appreciation Party, Carson s Creek Restaurant 16 th Zone 2 Driver Education, Virginia International Raceway (16 th 18 th ) 17 th Tour & Rally School, Collectors Car Corral in Owings Mills 20 th Social, Houlihans Restaurant, Elkridge, MD 24 th Tech Session, Classic Car, Porsche of Towson 25 th Autocross, Instructor Course, Location TBD 28 th Board and Committee Meeting (open to all members) April 6 th Zone 2 Region s Presidents Meeting, PCA Headquarters (6 th &7 th ) 7 th Introduction to Autocross School, Porsche of Annapolis & Laurel Park 7 th Hunt Valley Cars and Coffee, 6 th Anniversary (Season Opener) 21 st Hershey Porsche Swap Meet, Hershey Park, Hershey, PA 25 th TREFFEN Santa Ana, Pueblo, NM (25 th to 28 th ) From the above list of events, PCA National and your Board and Committee Chairs are hard at work planning events for you the Chesapeake Region Membership. I do hope you have an opportunity to take advantage of at least one of these activities and join in with your fellow members. How did you like the January Patter now that it s in the talented hands of Al Saxon and Ron Farb? Al and Ron would love to receive your feedback on the new design and layout? Please contact both Al and Ron at editor@pcachs.org. As I wrote in last month s President s Message, Ron and Al need your help, as the newsletter is only as good as the articles and photos you send them. Did you know we are always looking for volunteers to help out at our various events? Our upcoming Social on February 28 th needs a few photos and a paragraph of how many and who attended. Send your notes, photos and comments to editor@pcachs.org and watch Al and Ron turn your information into an article. Let s keep in touch, talk to me at an upcoming event, or me with whatever is on your mind at president@pcachs.org and I look forward to seeing you on the road real soon! Have fun and Drive Safely! 10 Ron s Ramblings Ron Farb Hey all multiple ramblings this month so bear with me. Clarification last month we published an application for the Ferry Porsche Trophy submitted by our past president Claude Taylor. What we should have also pointed out was that this great write-up was written by Minta Miller. Thanks Minta! Confession - I didn t join PCACHS initially when I first got P BXSTR (2013 Boxster) since I assumed everyone else would have these beautiful new expensive Porsches and I would only have an old used Boxster. I really thought I would be embarrassed. Obviously I was way wrong ( its all about the people ) but it did get me wondering how many people join with older cars. Therefore I did a very unscientific count of all the people/cars that joined PCACHS by looking in the New Member section of each Patter since Jan 2017 and it turns out that only 15% of the 159ish new members had new cars. The remaining 85% joined with older cars of which I suspect most were purchased used (woops I mean pre-owned) and thus saved substantial dollars like I did. I know in my case P BXSTR had 3 previous owners but since I saved big bucks and it has the Porsche CPO, what could possibly go wrong :-) Comments I had a great time at the After Holiday Party and thought the majority of the gifts were very good with some being overly generous. However, and I m not sure how to say this nicely, some of the gifts were dreck. Now that everyone has seen the type and quality of gift that is exchanged, I would encourage some to up their game for next year. Enough said. The highlight of the night for me was seeing Aniano Arao win the Enthusiast of the Year award which is incredibly well deserved. In the Ferry Porsche Trophy write-up last month, our past president called our tours program the Jewel in our Crown and I agree. They are amazing and Aniano is a god in my book! Also thanks to Brett Smith and KT Nesbitt from Porsche of Annapolis for sponsoring this event. Competition - Did anyone see that GM is wrapping up the C7 Corvette production by releasing the 2019 Corvette ZR1 this spring with 755 horsepower and a starting price of around $130,000? Repeat - $130,000 for a GM car - wow. I find this interesting because up to now, I don t think Porsche buyers are Corvette buyers but I wonder if Chevrolet/Corvette is trying to change that. A base 8 cylinder C7 Corvette goes for $55.5K while a base Cayman with only 4 cylinders is $55.3K. An upgraded Corvette Z06 goes for $79.5K and competes favorably with the 911 at a base $91.1K. Clearly the ZR1 is going to compete with the 911 Turbo (maybe the GT3s as well) which start at $161.8K. And to top it off, the new Corvette C8 is strongly rumored to be mid-engine which I m sure will put a hurting on the already declining sales of 718 Boxsters and Caymans. I would think Porsche has to be somewhat worried about all this so let s see how they respond. CHS Board I just attended the 3 hour CHS Board meeting last night and all I can say is wow. The board members are incredibly committed and we discussed a variety of topics that included strategies 10

Ron s Ramblings to stay within IRS rules so that sponsorships don t affect our non-profit status, where we should have our Concours d Elegance this year and next year, and our relocation to a new autocross venue. We also talked about tech events, community service, socials, the After Holiday Party, new member parties, tours & rallies and certainly a few other things I may have dozed thru. My point here is that some of these folks travel over an hour each way to attend these meetings just to make PCACHS the fantastic and incredibly active organization that it is. All of the activities that we run may appear seamless to the members but I just witnessed first hand how much work really goes into them. So if you get a chance, thank a Board Member. Casey Parkin - A shout out to Casey and Porsche of Silver Spring for hosting an amazing Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona party. This year they held it a Jailbreak Brewing Company and the food and beer were outstanding (as always). Definitely a must do for all us moochers out there at a first class event. Cruising - And my final ramble, I love taking P BXSTR out on the weekends and just driving around After Holiday Party Diorama 11

Ron s Ramblings A new Panamera 4S Sport Turismo hiding in the back of Jailbreak Brewery. on some of the back roads in Howard and Carroll counties. I would also love to do this occasionally with some other Columbia or Ellicott City folks if there is any interest in joining me. This absolutely is not a PCACHS sponsored event, it would just be a bunch of Porsche car enthusiasts enjoying a good drive together for an hour or so with no real destination. I have a couple of routes I like and would certainly join you on your favorite routes as well. If you are interested, then please drop me an to my personal account at rifarb@yahoo.com. Perhaps we can get a small local group together who like to do this. 12

Porsche Museum Visit Our Visit to the Porsche Museum - Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, Germany on 28 Dec 2017 We rolled out of bed Thursday, 28 December 2017, walked downstairs to have a cup of fresh coffee and suddenly thought to visit the Porsche Museum with such great weather (45 degrees) in Bavaria - at the time when Maryland was in an artic freeze. We jumped on Autobahn A3 to A81 heading south towards Stuttgart. Autobahn 81 is a fantastic stretch of road at limitless speed for the most part. We arrived without a speeding ticket at high noon and marveled at the gorgeous facility. The building itself is a beautiful and sophisticated architectural design. The Porsche Museum - a must encounter for Chesapeake members. To visit, the cost is 8 euros per adult and 4 euros for parking (which is underneath the Museum). As a member of the PCA, I whipped out my club card and received a 50% discount on the bill. The detailed information of each car and seeing the evolution of various Porsche sports cars both street and race machines was overwhelming at first, but by the time you reach the top deck and review the nut to bolt restoration of a Porsche 901 built in 1964 you wanted more. The self-guiding tour was a very informative and takes about 2 hours. In the Museum there were all sorts of Porsches of various ages, all of which are in absolutely pristine condition as the photos show. There were also "sound silos" where one could hear the roaring engines of various Porsche cars as well as a Porsche Tractor. The Museum has a nice gift shop with postcards and a variety of Porsche pens, clothes, luggage, posters, books and miniature cars. There is also a coffee shop in the lobby, a cafe and a nice restaurant. Scott and Bettina Kirklighter 17

Tech Event Reflected Images TECH Event at Reflected Images Detailing WHAT: TECH Event at Reflected Images Detailing on professional versus over the counter coatings, demonstrating the proper steps necessary to maximize the results. WHEN: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 th 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM The doors will open at 9:30 AM for coffee and donuts Presentations will begin at 10:00 AM Lunch is served 12:00, Beer 2:00 Concludes at 3:00 WHERE: Reflected Images Detailing 128 industry Lane Unit B Forest Hill, MD REGISTRATION: Register via ClubRegistration.net or drop Jim Earlbeck, our Tech Chair, an at jearlbeck@earlbeck.com so that he knows who is coming and how many donuts to buy. Registration will also make you eligible for the $250 gift certificate raffle! Our first Tech Event of the year will happen at Reflected Images Detailing. This is not your average Tech event. We are starting this year off in strong form. Brian Daly, of Reflected Images, has realized that Porsche owners are amongst his favorite customers as our cars are not garage queens. We routinely drive our cars, race our cars and yet we still demand that they look their best. Brian has pulled together a fantastic Tech Event agenda. He will start with a brief introduction about himself and his business. He ll quickly move into the why, what and how of professionally installed coatings and the differences between the over the counter and the professional products. Brian will convey the necessities of each step for the Porsche owner. A warning here- his process is not a ten minute tidy. His technique is a full wheels off, head lamps out sort of thing. No corners are cut in his process. Two cars will be used to show his tricks of the trade. Keep your fingers crossed, but hopefully both cars will be the same color, same model Porsche. That way you will be able to see the before and after. Working on the before demo car he will demonstrate the machines, lighting, pads and chemicals used in each step. As the coating cures we will be offered a catered lunch provided by Reflected Images. With our bellies full and our heads swimming with answers to our questions that he will field over lunch, Brian will move back onto the car to finish the process. He will recap the entire process and discuss the proper coating maintenance program. Did I say that Brian is fond of Porsche owners? He is arranging a small beer tasting to wrap things up in style and give us some more time to pick his brain. Not only will the Club be running its famous $250 gift certificate raffle to the attendees, but Brian has decided to sweeten the deal even more. Reflected Images and CQuartz coating will be giving away a special gift to each registered attendee! Brian has also arranged for a representative from the DuPont Registry to be present at this meeting. The DuPont Registry is interested in how we function as a club thru Tech and our other events. They will be posting social media of what occurs that day. So put on your best Club togs and made it to this event. It is going to be big! Maybe too big, so register early as we are going to limit it to 60 people. 23

March s TECH Event is at Porsche of Towson discussing the new factory backed Classic Program and what it means to keeping your Classic Porsche running properly. On March 24 th 2018, Porsche Towson welcomes the Chesapeake Region PCA to join us for a tech session which will focus on the Porsche Classic program. We at Porsche Towson see this as a tremendous opportunity to serve our core client, the Porsche enthusiast, and have eagerly embraced this factory backed initiative. Only around 100 Porsche dealers worldwide will be awarded Classic Partner status. The Porsche Classic program is for cars discontinued from standard production at least 10 years ago. In other words, the 356, 914 and 911 up to and including Types 964, 993 and 996 / 986; as well as four and eight-cylinder Porsche sports cars such as the 924, 944, 968 and 928. Porsche has a commercial that summed the Classic Program up rather nicely. 26 2017 Autocross - Year In Review Pat Walker So - with all of the holiday and after holiday stuff out of the way with, I guess it s time to go recap the 2017 and point out what s in store for us in But before I get started I have to thank the guys who helped make each of the events possible and at one time or another made that critical fix, course change, or other contribution that allowed us to have another safe, entertaining and competitive season for not just Chesapeake Region PCA members, but the regional motor sport community. Those individuals are as follows: Rick MacInnes, John Jensen, Manny Alban, Greg Martell, Anthony Martell, Ata Tabash, Rick Merriken, Donna Brandt and Minta Miller, Bob Rassa, Lynda Sobus, Michael Murphy and James Orrell. Special mention goes to my co-chair Ryan Golom, whose skill at developing challenging and safe courses on a 300 x500 lot was put to the test on a monthly basis. Without his attention to detail it would have been impossible to have been impossible to have the variety of safe and challenging courses. Last, but not least a special thanks goes to our 2017 sponsor, Porsche of Annapolis. Bret Smith and his team s financial and logistics support were critical in several capital investments that will hopefully serve us well for many years to come! Oh! and one last thank you to a MAJOR player in our success - the folks over at BWI Airport! Their generosity with their lot and willingness to work with us with schedule changes is greatly appreciated. Now with all of the thank yous out of the way with, let s recap what happened over the past year. NEW Trailer With the additional equipment needed to run our ever expanding events, it was time to trade in our 10 x6 trailer for something a little more roomy. After some persuasive communicating to the board and generous contribution from our friends at Porsche of Annapolis we were on our way to having a new trailer. Getting a trailer is easy - trying to get rid of one for what you think it s worth is hard. After several tire kickers, checked out the trailer and either wanted work put into the trailer, or offered a ridiculously low price, an ad appeared from a Before! Boy Scout troop that needed a trailer for their camping gear. After several dozen phone calls and s, we had sealed the deal with the Boy Scout troop and they were ready to take the old trailer off our hands - but what about the new trailer? Due to delays at the factory our trailer was running 26

2017 Autocross - Year In Review Pat Walker Donation to a good cause - Boy Scout Troop 2016, Frederick MD behind schedule and the Boy Scouts really needed the trailer, but we needed someplace to put all of the autocross equipment as we waited for delivery of our trailer. Bob Rassa, Region Historian, came to the rescue! He allowed us to dump all of our equipment in his garage for the week or so it took for the new trailer to come in, and we were able to transfer to the awaiting Boy Scouts at a jam-packed ceremony. Now with the transfer out of the way with, we needed to pick up the trailer and get it outfitted before the next autocross event on the calendar. Fortunately we have some really gifted woodworkers in the region and they were able to get to work on the trailer. Bob Rassa, Mike Murphy, Linda Sobus, and Jim Orrel donated their time and labor and were able to outfit the trailer ahead of schedule and all without a safety incident! :) Would not have been possible without support from our Sponsor, Porsche of Annapolis, Region Members, Autocrossers, and Bob Rassa, Mike Murphy, Lynda Sobus, and Jim Orrell 28

2017 Autocross - Year In Review Return to Ripken (A.K.A. Rumble at Ripken) Pat Walker After an extended hiatus (approximately 7 years), autocross co-chair Ryan Golom reached out to Ripken Stadium management and was able to set up a contract for the use of their lot. This was, by far, our largest event ever. With close to 100 drivers with skills ranging from rookie to pro, a wide range of cars were on hand to test their mettle on our largest course the Chesapeake Region PCA has seen in some time. It appears management of the stadium is changing hands again this year, but we will not let that stop us from getting another event out there for your driving enjoyment. Dean Vosk tearing up the course! Paddock Life 29

2017 Autocross - Year In Review AWARDS Pat Walker 2017 was another highly competitive season! 31 2017 Autocross - Year In Review Coming in 2018 Pat Walker So with all of the accomplishments made in 2017, we re going to be facing some challenges in the upcoming year. First off, we ve enjoyed a really nice 8 year run at the current BWI lot, but as with all good things - they always come to an end. I was recently notified by BWI contracts that another entity was interested in leasing both of the lots at Matthison Way in their entirety. Further negotiation was useless because word on the street is that this is part of the Amazon expansion that we heard was going on at BWI. Yes - it s a blow, but the Autocross team is actively working on securing property for our 2018 Season, and may have something positive to report soon. Stay tuned to the Region homepage at pcachs.org and our Facebook page for updates! The Chesapeake Region PCA Autocross team is deeply grateful to the BWI organization for their 8+ years of outstanding support providing us decent sized lots without asking for an arm and a leg. Speaking of arms and legs, that s what it takes to efficiently run an autocross program. I have been fortunate to have a great team to help out, but I am going to lose a very valuable member of the team soon. The other half of the Autocross chair, Ryan Golom, has announced that he is separating from the military and relocating out of the area. While he will be here for the first couple of events of the season, and has offered to help out with a sequel to Rumble at Ripken, he will be busy with his new life as a civvie. I announced at the After Holiday Party that we were looking for someone who wanted to take on the challenge of Autocross cochair, and was pleasantly surprised that I had an immediate volunteer. Bradley Martinez, son of past Region President Gary Martinez, has stepped forward. Once the Board has approved his assignment to the position of Autocross Co-Chair, Brad will become an integral member of the Autocross team. Please take a moment to thank both Ryan and Brad for their dedication to supporting a program that brings enjoyment to so many people. 31

After Holiday Party Donna Brandt The Chesapeake Region, PCA celebrated the beginning of a new year of events on January 13, 2018 with their famous After Holiday Party (AHP) and Awards dinner at Turf Valley Resort and Spa. This year s event, as for the last 6 years, was once again managed by our past Secretary and National Concours Champion Donna Brandt. To allow more of our members to attend, Donna arranged to have the event this year in the Cameo Ballroom and Reception area which easily held the all-time record of 134 participants. What a night! As everyone arrived they were greeted with a performance by an all-female barbershop quartet serenading them adjacent to the on-site registration. Thanks to Potomac Region PCA Member Lara Pierce for participating and arranging this. About 140 or so PCA Chesapeake Regionaires, PCA National representatives, Porsche of Annapolis representatives and other Region 2 dignitaries gathered at Turf Valley for the After Holiday Party and Yankee Swap. This being your editor s inauguration to the Yankee Swap, the proceedings created quite an impression! Awards were presented, contributions were recognized and the crowd cheered as Aniano was crowned Enthusiast of The Year! A well deserved tribute to a member who has provided such a dedicated effort to our Tours and Rally s, as well as being a pioneer in the use of the Porsche GTS App. While Minta Miller and Arlene and Doug Ehmann adeptly handled the check-in, our members and guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d oeuvres during a very lively happy hour prior to entrance to the dining area. Minta also sold the 50/50 Charity Raffle Tickets with proceeds going to the chosen charity this year: For Pete s Sake, a cancer respite charity. A special shout-out to Atena Bosak winner of the 50/50. She kept $63 of the $563 and donated the other $500 back to the charity! Very classy move, and sets the standard for next year :-) Following dinner, Bob Gutjahr and Manny Alban carried on the tradition of being the MCs for our Yankee Swap, where their running commentary on the gifts donated by the attending members keeps everyone laughing. Pictures of all the prizes and participants may be found at albums/ /page1 32
