President's Message PCA Chesapeake Region Charter Dated March 20, 1961 (Special Thanks to Bob Rassa, Historian) What the heck is all that white stuff on the ground? Come on now, the calendar says its spring! Thanks to Mr. Winter s polar jet stream, which just happened to be on its southern route across the eastern portion of the country, decided you guys need a good snowstorm on the second day of spring! Ole man winter donated anywhere from eight to twelve inches of snow on March 20 th, which just happened to be our 57 th Anniversary as a PCA Region, and of course the snow ruined our scheduled Anniversary party at Houlihan s (photo of cake shown on next page)! For obvious safety reasons, I had to cancel the Social, but we have rescheduled for April 17 th, same location, so please come on out! Well, enough grousing about Mr. Winter, let s discuss what the Region has been doing in spite of the snow (I promise that will be the last time I use the word snow in this message). On March 3 rd, we held our first New Member Party of the year at Porsche of Silver Spring, which was hosted by PCA member Casey Parkin. We had 58 people show up of which 21 were new members according to our Membership Chairperson, Minta Miller. Casey Parkin announced a new Porsche of Silver Spring offering where any new vehicle purchased from Porsche of Silver Spring, with European Delivery, will receive a check for $1,500 to defray the European travel costs, or a $500 check if you take delivery at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, which also includes the driving experience and lunch. The very next day on March 4 th, we headed over to the Timonium State Fair Grounds to attend the spring Home & Garden Show. Jay Plummer, your Chesapeake Challenge Co-Chair, along with Rebecca Earlbeck, your Community Service Chair, arranged for a Porsche only parking coral at the Fair Grounds. Twenty-five attendees resulted in a total of 9

Chesapeake Region President's Message $300 being collected. These funds were donated to the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation. Many thanks to all who attended and who made this possible. In fact, we need a new Social Committee Chair, as Eugene and Sharon O Dunne asked if they could step away from the Social Committee duties as a reoccurring medical issue is preventing Gene from continuing in this role. So please let me know by president@pcachs.org that you would like to volunteer as the next Social Chair! Did you know our own Manny Alban was the Master of Ceremonies of the March 9th PCA National WERKS REUNION at Amelia Island, Florida! And, th your Tech Co-Chair Jim Earlbeck took 3rd Place in the For our members who love our Tours, on March 17 you were treated to 356 Group Cona special education cours! 11 President's Message back to CCC, where each attendee s $10 registration fee helped defray the cost of their lunch, which was from Mission Barbeque and was just wonderful whether you had the pork, chicken or beef. As I mentioned in my introduction, our March 20 th Social at Houlihan s Restaurant was cancelled due to the snow storm. As such, we have rescheduled this Social for April 17 th at the same time and location. So please go to and re-register for this Social. On March 24 th we held our second Tech Session of the year at Porsche of Towson. Tech Committee Co- Chairs Jim Earlbeck and Randy Richter arranged with Steve Postol of Porsche of Towson wherein Steve presented an overview of Porsche s Classic Car program. The Classic Car program was described as the opportunity to have your older Porsche vehicle restored by factory trained mechanics using only genuine Porsche parts. If you attended this event, you received a Goodie Bag from Porsche of Towson that included a copy of Porsche s hard cover Classic Car parts catalog, a membership discount card of 20% off on parts and labor when your Porsche is 7 Years old or has 95,000 + miles, and a shatter-resistant drink tumbler. As Porsche of Towson is a long-standing Partner with the Chesapeake Region, PCACHS presented Porsche of Towson a Certificate of Appreciation for the many years we have worked together for the betterment of Porsche of Towson and the Chesapeake Region. An image of the letter and plaque are as follows: 11

President's Message Pat Walker, Ryan Golom, and our newest Autocross Co-Chair Brad Martinez, conducted the Autocross instructor course on Sunday, March 25 th. This course of instruction included both a classroom session in the morning and course session in the afternoon. We concluded March s activities on March 28 th wherein we held the 2 nd Board Meeting of the year and discussed Treasury, Membership, Autocross, Tour & Rally, Community Service, and the other various Committee old and new business, including a vote to affirm Brad Martinez as the newest Autocross Co-Chair. Let s look ahead to what we have planned for April and see if there is an event that has something you might be interested and want to participate in: On April 7 th at Porsche of Annapolis, the Autocross team will conduct the Driver s Instruction Course. So all you AX drivers, get up early and head on over to Porsche of Annapolis. Along with the other nine Presidents of Zone 2, I will join them on April 7 th for the first of two Zone 2 President s Meetings planned for We will mutually share various methods and tips to improve each of the 10 Regions, and it s a good time to meet our fellow Region Officers within Zone 2. I will provide a summary report of the meeting in next month s President s Message. As mentioned above, the April Social will be on April 17 th at Houlihan s. So come on out and say hello and have dinner with your fellow members. The Tour & Rally season will kick-off on April 21 st with our annual breakfast and drive north to Hershey Park for the Porsche Only Swap Meet! As you may or may not know, the Porsche Only Swap Meet is a PCA event hosted by the Central Pennsylvania Region and it s loads of fun. Just be prepared for every type of weather condition. If you registered for Treffen Santa Ana, then you ll be heading south and west to Pueblo, NM and be there before the April 25 th start, and run through April 28 th. If Treffen Santa Ana is anything like Treffen Ashville, PCA members are in for an outstanding adventure. If you are going, please remember to take lots of photos and send them and a quick article to for inclusion in the Patter. To round out April, the first Autocross Session will be held on April 28 th at our new course, located at Lincoln Technical, Columbia, MD. Hats off to Pat Walker for his hard work over the winter months to secure this new Autocross site, as we were asked to leave the former BWI site due to planned construction. As always, I am interested in hearing and receiving feedback from our members, and especially new event ideas. So think about events and outings that we don t currently offer and send me your ideas. I will share each idea with the Executive Committee for their review and feedback. So, let s keep in touch and me at I look forward to seeing you on the road real soon! Have fun and Drive Safely! *** Michael 12

Ron s Ramblings Ron Farb Lots of random ramblings this month. I always find it humorous that Porsche can create spartan models of their 911 s and Boxster/Caymans by removing things like air conditioners, radios, sound proofing etc and then charge more for them due to the experience. Along this thought, did anyone catch the Porsche Inspired watch article in the February issue of the Panorama that had the $350 watch with no minute hand? Really who buys these? Frankly, I bet that if Porsche could get away with having no door on a 911 and only a single continuous body panel with a window cutout and then claimed racing heritage and purer driving experience, people would buy it. Another fun article in the February Panorama was The Power of Color in which it said 73% of all new cars are either white, black, gray or silver. Judging from what I have seen at our car events, I would say our percentage of these boring neutral colors is slightly higher. Of course we are much better than BMW since about 95% of their cars seem to be black. The most colorful cars I ve ever seen are the Ford Mustangs which people still purchase in a nice variety of colors just go to any Mustang show and you ll see what I mean. Here s hoping attitudes change soon and that we all start buying Porches in bright colors such as red, blue, green, yellow, or orange like in the past. In going thru the service records of P BXSTR ( Boxster S), I realized that the three previous owners had never changed the air filters (yes I had all the service records printed out for me when I purchased the car). Even more surprising, the owner s manual doesn t even tell you how to do it which means Porsche really wants you to take your car in and have it serviced. Now I m not very handy with cars but I found and watched two videos (video1 & video2) on YouTube and figured I would give it a go. Neither video was perfect as the first one was done on a 981 Cayman and the second one glossed over all the details on how to remove the felt liner in the Boxster trunk. However, I persevered and finally got the liner out and replaced both filters in less than 2 hours (including a trip to Home Depot to get a #25 torx screwdriver when I couldn t find mine). If you decide to have at this yourself, the toughest part was truly getting the liner out. Three hints to help you - the liner is surprisingly more flexible than it appears and make sure you disconnect the bulb at the back of the liner and disconnect the latch connector in the front. Neither video mentioned these connections and I almost ripped them both out. Fortunately the filters themselves remove exactly as shown in the videos and the liner re-installs much easier than it comes out. Anyway, easy enough to save a few hundred dollars. 13

Ron s Ramblings I took my own advice from my last Patter column and attended Friday at the Track (FATT) at Summit Point on March 16. Driving there thru a small snow squall didn t thrill me in my summer tires, but once there I had a good time despite the cold. I hung with a bunch of guys from my group, tied my personal best lap time, and drove home in perfect shape while grabbing some Long John Silver chicken planks along the way. A good day! I ve already signed up for April. I had an excellent time at the Tour & Rally School and the driving tour on 17 March. The breakfast and presentation to start the day were perfect. Steve Graham gave a very informative presentation on rally tours which I really enjoyed since I had no idea what they were or how they differed from racing. I also got a kick when Randy talked about, and then showed us, the car detail training section of the building. Once again, I had no idea that professional detailers go thru substantial training to learn their craft I guess I need to get out more. I then led the second group of cars on Aniano and Randy s tour thru parts of Howard County and I think I can safely say that many of us are excited that future tours this season may split the cars into normal groups and scenic/ leisurely groups. Assuming we do this, it will make it easier for everyone to drive at a safe speed that is comfortable for them during the tours which is a good thing. Anyway, after the drive we had a great BBQ lunch and got to admire the cars in the Collector s Car Corral. Wow wow wow! Finally, who doesn t love Legos and Porsches together! I m sure most of you are familiar with the $300 Porsche 911 GT3 RS kit (2704 pieces) but did you know that Lego just released a new Porsche 911 RSR and 911 Turbo 3.0 kit (391 pieces) for only $30. There are also some other Porsche kits available including a Porsche 919 Hybrid. Finally a few 911s I can afford. 14

History Channel PCA-Style A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 25 years ago Bob Rassa Club Historian 40 years ago in April 1978 we were still meeting at Peerce s Plantation Restaurant near Loch Raven Reservoir, where fortunately there was plenty of parking in the rear where the separate banquet building that we used for our meetings was located. Back then we provided entertainment at the meetings and that month we were showing two films, one being the East African Road Rally, and the Monterey CAN-AM Grand Prix. A nice calendar of events was planned for April and May, starting with an autocross at the AAI lot in Cockeysville, a tech session at 40-West Porsche+Audi, a TSD checkpoint school, the Central Penn swap meet in Mechanicsburg PA, a Team Trophy Rallye by CSCC Chesapeake sports Car Club -[we covered these Team Trophy events in prior editions these are put on by all clubs in the Baltimore area and entrants accumulate points over the season], and for May the planned events were a TSD rallye by Volvo Marque Club, a Team Trophy Autocross by CSCC, and a Gimmick Rallye by CCB Corvette Club of Baltimore. President Ted Goodwin complimented our two dealers, 40 West Porsche+Audi [gone!] and Towson Valley Motors [now Porsche of Towson] as well as Frank Salemi s Interstate Tire [fortunately still around!]. Your historian wrote a long piece on the new 928, having done a week-long road test for PANORAMA on the car and having treated PCA-Chesapeake members to looks and rides on a previous Sunday. Notable was a brief discussion of the first use of microprocessors in a Porsche, which we will quote here: For those of you who are not engineers, a microprocessor is the latest electronic marvel to put people out of work. Essentially it is a miniature computer. As a computer, it works just like a big computer, that is, it does exactly what you tell it to, and it does so very quickly, unless it should decide to do other than what you told it to do, in which case it does so even faster. Let me tell you, these computers can make mistakes you never even dreamed of, and of such immense proportions that it fairly boggles the mind, and it does so with absolute blinding speed. In the center photo spread, a used car lot was shown with a Porsche Z28, Tom Henry s Corvette, a Ford Model A street rod and a VW Beetle. [the Z28 was the PANORAMA test drive 928 with New Jersey plates and an altered rear logo] An unknown author [but we suspect Patter Editor Ab Tiedemann] wrote a piece on the use of computer chips [i.e. microprocessors] in a car s electronic alarm system. He said he chose the Ancrona Z-80 chips for his design because they were out of fries, and the chips went well with a cheeseburger and Pepsi. He also noted that the data entry system was intended to be a keyboard but he saw the future in visual and anal recognition systems, and that the first generation of such a system was first seen with the HAL 2,001 CPU produced by Phucuptis Enterprises. Marty Goldsmith wrote a nice piece on disconnecting the air injection pumps [an early emissions control mechanism] and the problems than can ensue, and he said that you must readjust the timing [yes you could actually adjust the timing back then] to achieve normal performance. And Dr. Al Thompson from Richmond was selling his S 5-speed, 37k miles, for $11,000. An even better deal [cringe here, Dennis Howard!] was a 73 RSR for $8,

Let Us All Salute the Captain Guest Column from Danielle Badler Lo and behold, I recently opened a copy of The New York Times and could barely swallow my Special K as I read a piece entitled At 81, Penske Still Speeds Along. It s hard to believe, isn t it. Here s the Gray Lady, devoting three columns to the legend. Despite the challenge I have on many Mondays, to find out the winners of the IndyCar race the previous weekend in the same pages. But it was an interesting piece. Roger compares his time spent in the pits with his IndyCar teams, with his Nascar teams and with his sports-car team as my fishing trip and golf game on weekends. When will he ever slow down? Penske says My wife asks me that every weekend. But the reality is more complex. Penske is driven (pardon the pun.) He always has been. And, today, that drive to win is a basic tenet of all his business interests. It s an asset we have among our 56,000 people, he s quoted in the article. We create winners. We have a positive impact on our customers and our brand. As long as I m able, I want to be connected with motor sports because it s something we know. We re in the transportation business. I heard him say pretty much the same thing, in person, at a worldwide management meeting I attended in the late 80s. Penske was a board member of the company I worked for, and he was invited to be the keynote speaker. As best as I can recall, his team had just won one of his 16 Indy 500s, with Rick Mears, and he talked at length about the benefits that come from dedication, focus, perseverance and the pursuit of perfection. I remember thoroughly enjoying and identifying with his remarks. Listening to a legend, trying to identify with his racing stories. About what it takes to be a winner. But I also wondered how many of my colleagues and there were probably 300 or more of us in the audience really knew about him, about his history, his wins, his sacrifices. I found out much later, as I climbed the corporate ladder, as I performed a corporate transfer six times, including a year in Europe, as I jetted off to exotic locales for meetings and more meetings, often missing important family occasions in the process. And as Is I tried to wrestle with an increasingly fragile family relationship at home. Was it worth it? I don t think the question has an answer. It s not a life for everyone. But it s what you do if you re Roger Penske. It s what he s always done, better than any team owner in history. And, don t forget, in his 20s, he was a world class driver, too. He raced in Formula 1. Throughout his career, Penske has searched for the winning edge. In business and in racing. And, judging by his success, he s been very, very good at it. Remember the 917/30 racer? With that blue Sunoco livery, it was perhaps my favorite Porsche race car of all time. And it annihilated the competition. What was the quote from Mark Donahue at the time? That you could never have too much power? The car was a living example. Then there was the 1994 win at Indy, with Al Unser, Jr. at the wheel. The power plant was the Mercedes-Benz 500I IndyCar engine. An engine developed specifically for one race, over a period of 10 months, in complete secrecy, to take advantage of a rules loophole that nobody else noticed. After the win, the loophole was closed. It s important to note, however, that Team Penske has won only one Indy 500 since That s a serious drought, says the author of the Times piece. So Penske will keep pushing because that is what he has alway done. He likes racing because it s a good way to entertain customers, but he still badly wants to win. Mark Miles, chief executive for Hulman & Company, which owns Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar series, is quoted in the article. His contributions to the sport over the years have been incredible. He demands perfection. That approach to racing really lifts the bar. It s a joy to see he s not lifting off the throttle. The Times author notes how, during IndyCar races, Penske is in the pits of the Team Penske driver with the most longevity. That s now Will Power, 37. But, for this Indy 500, Roger will be in the pits with Helio Castroneves, who will be trying to join A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears with four Indy 500 wins. Will Penske do it? I wouldn t bet against him. 16

2018 Porsche-only Swap Meet April 21, 2018 Giant Center, Hershey PA More info on web Site The Central PA Region of the Porsche Club of America is once again bringing its world-famous Porsche- Only Swap Meet to Giant Center, Hershey, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, April 21st, This is without exaggeration the largest event of its kind on the planet. It typically brings nearly 650 vendors, around 1,000 Porsches, and over 6,000 visitors from all over the world together in Hershey every year. If you re seeking an obscure Porsche or an obscure part for your Porsche, this is your best chance to find it. Every dealer and Porsche packrat in a 250-mile radius will be bringing their odds and ends for sale or swap. You ll see exotic Porsches found nowhere this side of Stuttgart, and Porsche personalities ranging from PCA muckety -mucks to (sometimes) celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld. As always, we ll feature a People s Choice Concours, and Sunday autocross, too! from cpa-pca web page The Porsche-only swap meet (by Hershey Park) is hosted by the Central Pennsylvania PCA and they Ron Farb claim it s the world s largest. I ve been the last few years and I believe them. The vendors have EVERY- THING including classic parts, tools, wheels, performance parts, seats, exhausts, and merchandise (teeshirts, glasses etc). Obviously food vendors as well. Bring your kid s red wagon if you really are looking for lots of parts. The other half of the meet is just walking around and admiring the 100 s of Porsches in attendance. Some of them are in the People s Choice Concours, some of them are for sale (in one area), but the huge majority are just the cars everyone drives up in to enjoy the swap meet and to be seen. I actually spend more time walking thru the parking lot of Porsches and dreaming of the ones I wish I owned than I do looking at the vendors. Takeaway shine yours up before you go! You can just drive there yourself or meet up with PCACHS members for breakfast and then cruise up together as a group. Details of the cruise/tour are on the next page. See you there - Ron 19

Garage Crawl May 12, 2018 Randy Richter Have you been waiting for another garage crawl? Well, your wait is over!! Thanks to the kindness of three members we will have another garage crawl on May 12 th. We will visit three garages in the Owings Mills area and then have a short tour to a restaurant for lunch. What will we see.well you will just need to come out and find out. In the past we have seen barns that are now fabulous garages, we have seen garages that maximize space, we have seen new garages, we have seen garages that remind you of Grandpa s workshop, we have seen garages that are for show, we have seen garages that are working environments and we have seen garages that are museums. We have learned that owners were Olympic coaches, had a misspent youth working on NASCAR and NHRA machinery, that they loved horses or boating and have some wonderful collections of memorabilia. So hold the date open and be sure to register early as this will be sure to be a sellout! Stay tuned for more details! We hope to see you there! Registration will open on April 16 th at clubregistration.net. 21

Our Past is Our Future Jim Earlbeck With our flux capacitors fully charged with a fresh load of plutonium, we gathered at Porsche of Towson for the second Tech Session of the season to learn about how Our Past is Our Future. Not a DeLorean was in sight. Apparently, the concept of style has shifted since Steve Postol, the general manager for Porsche of Towson filled in for Dr. Emmett Brown. Steve, known for his off the cuff speaking ability, decided that the topic of Porsche Classic was so fundamentally important that he should write out his presentation for the first time. Here is Steve s script- Over 70% of Porsches ever built are still on the road today. Let that sink in for a moment. After 70 years of producing cars, this is a huge testament to not only the quality of the brand, but the quality of the drivers as well. The Porsche brand has inspired a passion and dedication that is unmatched in the industry, and everyone in this room is a part of that. To achieve an extraordinary accomplishment such as this, requires a partnership. For many years, that partnership has in large part been between the Porsche owner, and his or her guy. Every one of you most likely has that guy, the old school independent that has been your source for information and technical assistance over the years and probably a few cars or more. Some of you may have more than one, based solely on the individual car and or need. A suspension specialist, an engine guru, or the guy that understands early Porsche injection better than anyone. For better or for worse, and we all know that there are some challenges with smaller independent shops, this has been the norm for many years and has served most of you well. There is one thing that these independents have not been able to offer, however, and that is the backing of Porsche. Porsche Classic vehicles are recognized by automotive enthusiasts as the living representatives of a long line of unique automobiles, exemplifying a spirit of engineering that cannot be described in technical terms alone. For these enthusiasts, such vehicles have become legends as well as classics. And to maintain their legendary performance, Porsche Classic vehicles require support in the form of Porsche Classic Genuine Parts, up-to-date technical data and quality repairs. Authorized Porsche Dealers, especially Porsche Classic Partner Dealers, are happy to provide this support to our Classic customers. For you, this means your Porsche Classic vehicle is in expert hands. Porsche Classic cares for Porsche vehicles discontinued from standard production at least 10 years ago. In other words, the 356, 914, and 911 up to and including types 964, 993, and 996/986, as well as four and eight cylinder sports cars such as the 924, 928, 944, and 968. The Porsche Boxster (type986) and the Porsche 911 (type996) have recently been added to the classic lineup. At Porsche, tradition means recognizing your roots and then taking things one step forward. For us, tradition and innovation have always been closely aligned. That s why over 70 percent of all Porsche vehicles ever built are still on the road today, and the fascinating appeal of the brand expands with each passing year. Porsche Classic is dedicated to supporting the longevity of classic models. In order to meet the demands of a growing classic car market, around 100 Porsche Dealers worldwide will be awarded Porsche Classic Partner status over the next few years. This will create the necessary conditions for providing a comprehensive service to owners of much-coveted Porsche classic cars. Around 52,000 Porsche Classic Genuine Parts are available from all Porsche Centers worldwide. However, we won t stop there. In the future, Porsche Classic Partners will not only ensure the extensive supply of genuine spare parts and technical literature. They will also provide the necessary expertise for all repair and maintenance work, as well as full and partial restorations. 23

Our Past is Our Future Jim Earlbeck To meet these requirements and guarantee a consistent standard of quality around the world for all Porsche service and workshop staff, Porsche has developed a special Classic training concept. This will ensure that all Classic customers can rely on finding a specialist contact at their Porsche Classic Partner, combining service and advice with the relevant expertise and enthusiasm. We are proud to say that Curt Ledbetter, Gold Meister Technician, has completed all available Porsche Classic classes and is the only technician in the region to have done so. Curt and I had many discussions early on, and we both agreed that this was a no brainer. Not even knowing the depth of training, Curt was enthusiastic to learn even more than his numerous years of experience with the brand had afforded him. We saw an opportunity to expand in to a market that we had merely dipped our toes in to, and were thrilled when we learned of Porsche s commitment to the Classic concept. Curt has attended 5 weeks of intense training on the various models and systems that encompass Porsche Classic models. There will be two more weeks of training announced shortly, and we are eager to see what knowledge Curt returns with this time around. As for parts, over 52,000 parts are currently available for fulfillment, with hundreds more being reintroduced every year. How s that for commitment? To further bolster our position in this growing market, and to add value for our clients, Priority 1 has introduced the 7/95 club. We recognize that our clients take great care of their vehicles and perform routine maintenance to ensure that they continue to perform at the highest level. To reward those who drive the extra mile (over 95,000), or kept here vehicles more than 7 years, Porsche of Towson is proud to offer you this new opportunity to save up to 20% on parts and labor. You have all been given a membership card, with further details. This program ties in to our investment in Porsche Classic seamlessly. You can now reap the benefits of factory trained technicians equipped with the latest tools and information, at a rate competitive with independents. 24 And last, Porsche Classic Factory Restorations are available in Atlanta, Georgia and Freiberg, Germany. Decades of experience with classic Porsche production cars makes us a reliable partner for the restoration of Porsche production cars. Our aim is to retain the genuine appeal of your Porsche. This is a delicate balancing act when it comes to technical matters. We use original sets of tools, gauges, and data sheets while working in a high-tech workshop. All work carried out on your vehicle is done so by Porsche to the usual high standards of quality and authenticity, and is documented in detail. With a full restoration, you receive a certificate and exclusive book containing all of the documentation relating to the work on your vehicle. We also offer partial vehicle restoration as well as engine and/or transmission restoration. Steve and Curt were then subjected to a rather robust flurry of questions. It became apparent that although all of the nuts and bolts are not yet in place for Porsche of Towson to earn the elite status of being one of a small number of worldwide distributors classified as a Porsche Classic Partner, their passion and commitment to the program and to the cars of the past are resolute. The fact that Porsche of Towson has a back-up generator with 1.21 gigawatts of power should ensure that they will become a Porsche Classic Partner and will deliver on the promise that Our past is Our Future. Great Scott!!!! To quote the famous Dr. Emmett Brown and Marty McFly: Hey, Doc, we better back up. We don't have enough road to get up to 88. Roads? Where we're going, we don't need road. If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit.

53 Members Attend Tour & Rally School Overview of Rallies & Tours Presented, Use of Porsche GTS Routes App Explained By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee PCA Chesapeake s Tour and Rally Committee held its first event of 2018 on March 17 in Owings Mills. Fifty-three members attended the second edition of our school. They were treated to breakfast, classroom sessions, a driving tour and lunch. The day began at 8 AM with coffee and bagels. Then I acknowledged and thanked our sponsors. The Collectors Car Corral, led by founder Randy Moss, once again hosted this event at its Owings Mills facility. CPR Classic East, led by Bruce Wakefield, subsidized our lunch buffet from Mission BBQ for the second year in a row. Located in Easton, MD, CPR Classic East is a shop that specializes in restoring vintage Porsches. The first classroom session was an introduction to rallying. It was conducted by our guest speaker, Steve Graham, our region s executive vice president and a former tour and rally co-chairman. Steve explained what rallying is all about, Porsche s place in rally history, the various types of rallies, how they are organized, and how to do well in them. He paid particular attention to the rallies held in every Porsche Parade and Chesapeake Challenge. Steve s well-illustrated PowerPoint presentation was very effective and praised by all. In the second classroom session, Randy and I gave an overview of how our driving tours are conceived, researched, planned, organized and conducted. I explained our criteria for road, route and restaurant selection the three R s as well as how we go about putting the various elements of a tour together. Last year, the main focus of our Tour & Rally School was on rallying in general and on gimmick rallies in particular awesomely presented by guest speakers Bob Gutjahr and Ellen Beck. This year, our primary emphasis was on the use of the Porsche GTS Routes app for smartphones. This Porsche app is available free of charge from Apple s and Google s app stores. After describing what the app is all about, I proceeded to explain how to use it. The school attendees followed along using a 21- page tutorial that I had prepared. I also told them about the routes, maps and other information available on the Porsche GTS Community section of Porsche s Web site, at To give the school participants a chance to put into practice what they had learned about the Porsche app, I designed and recorded a special 39-mile tour route for them. After the final classroom session, they got into their cars, mostly in pairs. They left the Collectors Car Corral parking lot under Randy s supervision and were supposed to use the Porsche app and their phone s navigation app to find the tour s starting point. After all the cars had assembled on the parking lot of Kecco s Neapolitan Woodfire Kitschen in Reisterstown, I launched them in two groups. The first group was led by Mark Epstein and Wendy Tand in their S Targa. The second group was led by Ron Farb and Bob Zach in Ron s 3 Series BMW. Everyone was supposed to follow the route that I had uploaded into the Porsche app, but I had also provided everyone with printed driving instructions as a backup. After about an hour on the road, the tour participants returned to the Collectors Car Corral. A lunch buffet catered by Mission BBQ was ready for them. We had beef brisket, pulled pork and pulled chicken, plus cheesy potato, cold slaw, macaroni and cheese, and slider rolls. Sodas, water and ice were plentiful. The tasty lunch got very positive reviews from all those who volunteered their feedback. We concluded the gathering with a post-tour debrief. Observations, comments and suggestions were shared. Michael Murphy, president of PCA Chesapeake, announced forthcoming activities and then wrapped up the event. Our next event will be the annual driving tour to the Porsche Swap Meet in Hershey, PA, to be held on April 21. That will be followed by at least two events in May the Baltimore County Garage Crawl to be held jointly with the Tech Committee on May 12 and the Memorial Day Weekend Gimmick Rally in Howard County to be held on May 26. The latter rally was offered to us by PCA member and former Corvette Club rally master Jim Kinnear. He spoke briefly to school attendees during one of the classroom sessions. 26

Maryland Home & Garden Show Jay Plummer We had a nice turnout of PCA Chesapeake members who were able to attend the Maryland Home & Garden Show on March 4 as part of our community service day. Prime Porsche parking was right next to the building. Those in attendance got to see gardens with the theme "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". There was even a waterfall coming out of a Volkswagen! Other popular exhibits included the home improvements, gardening booths, craft show, petting zoo and butterfly/train exhibit. The group also got to see the Maryland Agricultural Education Trailer and all ticket revenue from the event will be donated to support the Maryland Ag Education Foundation which teaches kids the value of agriculture in today's ever changing world. 29
