3 Introuction Introuction Deep groove ball bearings are use in a particularly wie variety of applications. They are relatively simple in esign, non-separable, capable of operating at high an even very high spees, an require little attention or maintenance in service provie the customer selects the appropriate bearing specifications for his application. These characteristics couple with a price avantage make eep groove ball bearings the most popular of all rolling bearings. SKF prouces eep groove ball bearings in a large number of esigns an sizes. The most numerous are the single row bearings without filling slots (Conra assembly). The bearings with filling slots escribe in the section starting on page 47 are use in special applications an consequently only a limite range is prouce. Basic esign Deep groove ball bearings, single row SKF single row eep groove ball bearings have eep, uninterrupte raceways an a high egree of conformity between balls an raceways. This enables them to carry axial loas in both irections in aition to raial loas even at high spees. eep groove ball bearings are suitable for a wie variety of applications an are therefore prouce in a large number of sizes an esigns. eep groove ball bearings of the basic esign, i.e. open at both sies, (Figure 1) are prouce by SKF in several series an in a very wie range of iameters. Those bearings of the basic esign which are also prouce as shiele or seale bearings may, for manufacturing reasons, have recesse outer ring shoulers to take the shiels or seals. Figure 1 ABEC 5 single row bearings SKF prouces single row eep groove ball bearings in a higher precision class (ABEC 5). These proucts are most frequently use in high-spee applications or where precision is critical as in cutting tools, electric motors, hanhel tools, an spinles. ABEC 5 bearings are prouce in the 6200 an 6300 series an are available in an open version only. They can be supplie with either a brass (Y) or phenolic (TC) cage. Deep groove ball bearings with filling slots (Max type) eep groove ball bearings with filling slots incorporate a greater number of balls than the corresponing size without filling slot, an have a filling slot in both outer an inner rings. The raial loa carrying capacity is higher than that of bearings without filling slot, but their axial loa carrying capacity is small. The shiels are mae of sheet steel an normally have a cylinrical extension in the shiel bore to form a long sealing gap with the inner ring shouler. Shiele bearings are primarily intene for applications where the inner ring rotates. If the outer ring rotates, there is a risk that the grease will leak from the bearing at high spees. Bearings with low friction seals SKF eep groove ball bearings with lowfriction seals, esignation suffixes RSL, 2RSL or R, 2R are manufacture in two esigns epening on bearing series an size (Figure 4). Bearings in the 60, 62 an 63 series up to 52 mm outsie iameter are equippe with RSL seals to esign (a). Otherbearings have R seals (b). The seals form an extremely narrow gap with the cylinrical surface of the inner ring shouler or recess profile an are practically noncontracting. Bearings with snap ring groove Deep groove ball bearings with a snap ring groove can simplify arrangement esign as the bearings can be axially locate in the housing by a snap (or retaining) ring (Figure 6). 5 Introuction Lubrication Bearings with shiels or seals at both sies are supplie as stanar fille with a grease which has goo rust inhibiting properties an which is suitable for operating temperatures between -22 an +230 F (-30 to +110 C). The bearings are lubricate for life an are maintenance free. They shoul on no account be heate to temperatures above 250 F (120 C), nor shoul they be washe. By special orer, bearings with shiels or seals can be supplie with other greases, e.g. for a temperature range of -40 to +300 F (-40 to +150 C). The quantity of grease supplie is appropriate to the size of the bearing an normally fills between 25 an 35% of the free space in the bearing. Open bearings are supplie with a rust preservative that is compatible with most stanar greases an shoul not be remove prior to mounting or lubricating. Masses The masses given in the tables are for the basic esign of the bearing. The mass of bearings with shiel(s), seal(s) or snap ring groove iffers only slightly from that of the basic bearing. Internal clearance Raial internal clearance (Table 1) SKF single row eep groove ball bearings are prouce with Normal raial internal clearance (CN or C0 not marke on bearing) as stanar. Raial clearance selection is base on factors such as high spee, operating temperature, shaft fits an axial movement limitations. The availability of bearings with clearances other than Normal shoul be checke before orering. The suffix JEM inicates an internal clearance greater than Normal (C3). Many of the bearings, particularly the smaller sizes, are also available with raial internal clearance, which is greater than (C3) or less than (C2) Normal. The values of the clearance limits for single row eep groove ball bearings are shown in Table 1 an the values of the clearance limits for max type ball bearings are shown in Table 3 on page 30. This is also true of eep groove ball bearings, particularly if they run at high spees where the inertia forces of the balls an cage, an the friction in the lubricant can have a etrimental influence on the rolling conitions in the bearing an may cause amaging sliing movements to occur between the balls an the raceways. The requisite minimum raial loa to be applie in such cases can be etermine by using the Interactive Engineering Catalog on the SKF website or by contacting SKF Applications Engineering. However, the weight of the components supporte by the bearing, together with the external forces, often excees the requisite minimum loa. If this is not the case, an aitional raial loa must be applie to the bearing; for example, by increasing belt tension, by applying a preloa to the inner or outer rings, or by using springs.
