1 Style 31 Non-Restraine Flexible Victaulic Bolte Split-Sleeve Proucts (VBSP) Style 31 carbon steel expansion couplings (formerly Depen-O-Lok FxE) provie a non-restraine, flexible pipe joint that is esigne to accommoate axial pipe movement at the joint. The Style 31 coupling satisfies the requirements set forth by the AWWA C7 Stanar for Bolte, Split-Sleeve Restraine an Non-Restraine Couplings for Plain-En. This style of coupling is typically use in expose pipe applications for fiel joint connections where axial pipe movement ue to thermal expansion or contraction of the pipe line is a factor. Although Style 31 expansion couplings provie for a flexible joint an therefore o not prevent angular pipe movement, these couplings are not esigne to accommoate static or ynamic angular eflection at the joint. Style 31 couplings shoul be use to accommoate axial pipe movement only. The Style 31 couplings can allow for up to 4"/ mm of axial pipe movement at the joint an therefore assist in avoiing the accumulation of thermal stresses ue to changes in pipe length. For these couplings to function properly, the pipe movement must be axially irecte to the joint through the proper use of pipe supports, anchors an/or guies. External restraints must be installe to ensure the coupling oes not excee publishe values for expansion capabilities. Typical applications inclue water an wastewater treatment pipelines, force main an water transmission piping, penstock piping an other applications where changes in pipe temperature result in axial pipe movement that requires the use of an expansion joint to avoi thermal stresses. The coupling provies ease of installation an comes stanar with an epoxy coating for protection against corrosion. The use of a heat-shrink sleeve or tape system can be use with minimal effort ue to the low profile configuration. The ual-arche mechanical coupling boy houses o-ring gaskets that provie the raial seal aroun the circumference of the pipe, while the sealing plate provies for the axial seal across the coupling boy an pipe joint. The Style 31 coupling incorporates restraint rings wele to one pipe en (furnishe with the coupling) that keep the coupling in place on the fixe sie of the joint, while allowing the pipe to move axially within the coupling on the expansion sie of the joint. The Style 31 coupling requires thin stainless steel claing (also furnishe with the coupling) to be wele to the pipe en on the expansion sie of the joint, proviing for a smooth sliing surface for the coupling an o-ring gasket an avoiing amage to coate steel pipe surface. The coupling housing is esigne to accommoate hoop stress to meet system pressure requirements while maintaining a leak-proof joint seal. The expansion coupling also performs at negative pipe pressures up to full vacuum since the o-ring gasket is not pressure responsive an therefore oes not require internal pipe pressure to assist with the seal. The arche cross-sectional shape of the coupling provies for a high section moulus to resist forces encountere uring negative pressure (submerge) or vacuum service. Style 31 couplings are available in stanar nominal sizes from "/ mm with larger sizes available base on esign an application requirements. The Style 31 coupling can accommoate operating pressures up to psi/065 kpa (with higher pressure available) epening on the actual pipe iameter.
