The function of a spring hanger is to provide continuous support for th e pipe in all positions and relieve pipe stresses which could reach critica l proportions in the pipe itself or in connected equipment. The purpose of this catalog is to provide clearly detailed informatio n from which suitable spring units can be selected for the widest possibl e variety of applications. Our engineering staff will be pleased to review your pipe suspensio n problems with you, whether they apply to high temperature power plan t piping or to cryogenic applications with temperatures to -320 F.

The helical spring in each unit is pre-set in our shop to the pipe "cold load" position and is locked against deflection UP or DOWN* until the pipe line is ready for operation, at which time the side - locking bolts are removed. The RIGID r SPRING therefore provides support to the pipe ; (1) In its installed (COLD) position. (2) During expansion from COLD to HOT position. (3) At its operating'(hot) position. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION S Install the RIGID,r SPRING as if it were a component part of a simple rigid pipe hanger. Take up all slack in the hanger rod, and then tighten the upper and lower hanger rod lock nuts. After the pipe line and all hangers are completely erected, and the hydrostatic test made, remove th e side-locking bolts from the housing and the spring is free to deflect. Without further adjustment the spring will accurately support the pipe as the pipe expands to it s operating (HOT) position. In event that the pipe line is required to be dismantled, replace the side-locking bolts in the RIGI D ~ SPRING housing and the spring unit can be easily removed and stpred for re-use. The spring locking feature eliminates the need for extra long hanger rod threads and their tendency to strip whe n being turned under heavy spring loads. *An exclusive patent of Piping Specialties, Inc. * PATENTED Manufactured in Canada under exclusive Canadian Licence from Piping Specialties Inc., New York. s- l

4 NATURES MINERAL INFORMATION. TYPICAL APPLICATION S RIGID Ar SPRIN G FEATURE S Springs are manufactured to requirements of th e Manufacturers Standardization Society MSS-SP-5 8 TYPICAL APPLICATION S L--r Helical steel springs are pre-compressed to conserve headroom. All springs are calibrated and pre- set to the pip e "COLD" load before shipment. Each unit is furnished with a metal load indicator scale easily readable from a distance. A welded steel housing protects the spring and allows full view of the spring operation through its full range of movement. The turnbuckle affords ample adjustment for the R H threaded lower hanger rod. A heavy coat of high quality paint protects the unit against corrosion and rust. The unit is installed as a simple rigid hanger. The spring is positively locked against UP or DOWN * movement until the pipe line is ready to operate. n Type A -T' Type B GENERAL INFORMATIO N RIGID r SPRINGS are manufactured in three (3 ) major groups, identified as Figs. 805, 810 and 820. Each spring Figure No. is available in eight (8 ) standard Types to satisfy various applications, and in 21 different sizes to accommodate pipe load s ranging from 53 lb to 28,680 lb. Special designs are obtainable on application. 5 DESIG N DETAILS RIGID At' SPRIN G Design details of our eight (8) standard Type s of RIGID SPRING assemblies are illustrated here. Type A is equipped with a RH tapped connection for the upper hanger rod. The turnbuckle permits ample adjustment for the RH threaded lower hanger rod at all deflection positions of th e spring. Type B and Type C are furnished with one and tw o upper plates welded to the top of the spring housing to permit bolted assembly to our standard Fig 530 or Fig 128 upper attachments. Type B may also be used with a Beam Clamp. Type A L p Type B I l i Type C Type D and Type E are adaptations of the standar d design for installation on structural channel s spaced back to back to allow clearance for th e hanger rod. Type F is an adjustable base mounted spring for the support of base elbows or horizontal pipe s from beneath. The assembly is available wit h any form of modified upper connection. Type G and Type H trapeze spring hangers are for suspension of horizontal pipe lines. Turn - buckles provide adjustment for RH threade d hanger rods. All RIGID,V SPRING assemblies are furnishe d with our patented load-locking device which prevent s spring deflection UP or DOWN until the side-lockin g bolts are withdrawn.,. 4, 1 II Load column L-, guide availab l if specifie d Type D Type E Type F Type G E. 22 Supply, Design, and Engineering Service s The fundamental concept of the type of Hanger Supply Service required for a particular project must embrace certain basic factors : (a) The type and size of the project, and the custom of the contractor's forces. (b) The geographic location of the project and the urgency for completion. (c) A sensible plan for engineered or designed hangers where necessary, and the eliminatio n of special hangers, for economy, where possible. Competent and careful design and supply of all hangers for critical piping and "problem" lines. "Paper economies" in this type of work are false economies. Several types of Hanger Supply Services have been developed to satisfy the requirement s (d) of most piping projects. The proper selection of service will result in the most economical installed cost of a satisfactory job, completed on time, with the desired balance between field an d shop fabrication. TYP e I Hanger components supplied to customer's material lists, as catalogue items, shipped in bulk for field location, partial fabrication and erection. This is material supply only for normal pipe installation. Type II Shop fabrication from customer's hanger detail and location drawings. Hangers shop-assembled, painted and marked for field erection. Used mainly for small industrial jobs and changes or additions to existing proces s piping. Type III Locate and specify necessary hangers with hanger mark numbers on piping drawings. Supply simple hanger detail drawings (required for shop fabrication) to the field as an aid t o installation. Detail and supply all necessary auxiliary steel. Supply hangers shop-assembled, painted and marked, for field erection. This method is recommended for industrial and process piping, paper mills, an d sundry piping systems in large projects. Type IV Hangers for critical piping completely engineered ; semi-engineered hangers for noncritical piping over 2-1/2 inch diameter ; both types shop-assembled, painted and marked. Complete hanger detail drawings supplied. Small non-critical piping hangers either supplied as in Type m or may be supplied as bulk material for field erection. Recommended for oil refineries, chemical plants, some power plants, and industrial piping in certain applications. Type V A complete hanger design and supply service. Starting from the piping, structural steel, and auxiliary equipment drawings; completely engineered hangers and auxiliary stee l are supplied to the field ready for installation. This is a complete, guaranteed service with nothing omitted. This service is applicable to power plants and critical or experimental piping in any industry. Type VI "Problem" lines either existing or proposed, may be singled out for special attention. A complete engineering study of the problem is made, and piping recommendations and suitable hanger designs supplied. "Tailored-to-Measure" combinations of the above services, utilizing your standard s and procedures will develop the ultimate in economy and service. Such a program can best be determined personally. We would welcome the opportunity to review your requirements. S--20 E. MYATT & CO., TORONTO ONTARI O

Although at some load supporting points the thermal vertical pipe deflection ma y be small, Constant Support Hangers are valuable in reducing the effect of variations in pipe loading on the connected equipment. Constant Support Hangers are recommended in any case where pipe movements exceed 2 inches. The design of these hangers is based upon the theory of opposing moments. As the pipe of constant weight deflects upward or downwar d it is supported by a varying spring force acting upon a changing moment arm, to produce a non - varying upward supporting force to the pipe. A complete line of Constant Support assemblies is available in several standard models and in sizes to support pipes having vertical movement and loading to suit your requirements. 27 E. MYATT & CO. INC. General Descriptio n the constant Support designed and manufactured by F. M att & Co. incorporates the latest design concepts. resulting in a constant supporting cltct throug h the total travel of the unit. The simplified construction, together with the established principle of a compression spring working in conjunction with a hel l crank lever, achieves a mathematically perfect counter balancing of spring and load moments about the main pivot point. With a fixed spring housing of substantial construction the unit can be installed in many arrangements. The spring housing prevents the ingress of loreig n bodies such as construction debris. thus reducing the danger of damage or restriction of the unit's functio n Standard Rang e E. Myatt & Co. Constant Supports are constructed to accommodate loads between 12 Kg and Kg with a standard range of travels from 40 mm to in increments. Constant supports are manufactured having a maximum deviation of 6% of the specified load Upper and lower travel stops are incorporated in all units to prevent excessive overtravel. All supports are fitted with a clearly visible travel scale. Special Range Special Constant Supports are designed to suit customer's specific requirements i.e. higher loads. lower deviation. travels and configurations other than thos e indicated in the standard range. Load Adjustmen t Although the supports are preset to the customer ' s specified load and travel, it is sometimes necessary to adjust this preset load to accommodate mino r variations in actual site conditions. A simple operation of turning the load adjuster screw in the appropriate direction to increase or decrease the load is al l that is necessary. The amount of adjustment is shown on the adjacent scale calibrated in 2% divisions. The maximum adjustment being -1-20% of the mea n load. Presettin g All Constant Supports are fitted 1vith preset pins. These pins are factory positioned within the unit to suit the customer's specified installation condition. O n completion of installation and prior to removal of pins. the pipework system can be hydraulically tested or acid cleaned without further deflection of th e spring assembly. The preset pins must he removed before commissioning the system (refer to installation instructions). Our standard presetting pins will enable loads of up to twice the capacity of the support to be taken during the hydraulic testing period. Should it he necessary to carry loads in excess of this, we must be notified at time of ordering to ensure the supports are designed with adequate safet y. ~. margins. Infinitely Variable Travel Locking Mechanis m The Constant Support may be fitted with an infinitely variable locking device (within the travel limits of the unit) that will lock the support thus preventin g upward and downward movement for temporary conditions of underload or overload. The locking mechanism is only incorporated when specified, and is painted red. The locking mechanism should always be positioned at the extreme of the adjustment before the pipework system is commissioned. Selectio n To select a Constant Support. first calculate the load and travel witch the support is to accommodate. it is then good practice to add overtravel to the calculated travel. Recommended overtravel : Add 25 mm for travel up to 125 mm. For travels in excess of 125 mm add 20% of the calculated travel. This should then be rounded up to next whole 10 mm increment giving the total travel thus enabling a standard support to be selected. To determine th e correct constant support refer to the selection table and select a support frame size to accommodate the calculated load and the total travel. it should be note d that the travel given in the table is the total travel, this being the maximum vertical travel the unit will accommodate. When selecting vertical constants (Fig C51 only) these should always be selected below the heavy line. Finis h All units are painted with E. Myatt & Co. standard paint. Corrosion Resistant. When moderate corrosive or severe weather conditions are encountered, a corrosive resistance finish can be provided. The Constant Support unit i s galvanized to ASTM A153 I CSA G164 except the coil which is neoprene coated. The load flange assembly on type C54 and C55 is electro-galvanized. For severe corrosive conditions a completely neoprened coated constant support unit can be provided. Maintenanc e P.T.F.E. dry bearings are used on all pivoting points and are totally enclosed, no maintenance or lubrication is required. 29 G. MYATT & CO. INC. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION S 1.0 Attachment to Supporting Steelwor k The Constant Support Units are attached to the supporting steelwork by means of welding or bolting. (See data sheets for details). 2.0 Connecting and Loading of Constant Support Unit s 2.1 In the case of Constant Support Units fig. C50-05I utilizing sling rods, these should be connecte d between the equipment support attachment and the support unit connector (turnbuckle or yoke). The load i s transferred from the temporary installation condition to the Constant Support Unit by adjustment of th e turnbuckle or yoke arrangement. The Correct load setting is attained by adjusting the turnbuckle or yoke arrangement until the preset pin is easil y removed. 2.2 In the case of Constant Support Units fig. C54 and C55 where the equipment is supported from below, th e Constant Support Unit is positioned between the equipment support bracket and supporting steelwork, differences in height are accommodated using the height adjustment nut. The load is transferred from the temporary installation condition to the Constant Support Unit by further adjustment of the height adjusting nut. The correct load setting is attained by rotation of the height adjusting nut until the preset pin is easily removed. 3.0 Pre-Commissionin g 3.1 The preset pins should normally remain in position for any pre-commissioning overload conditions, but must b e removed prior to operation and stored for future use. 4.0 Load Adjustment 4.1 In the event that the load is greater or lesser than the load for which the unit is calibrated, it will be necessary t o make use of the load adjustment facility. The load adjuster allows for an increase or decrease of load carrying capacity of plus or minus 20 percent o f the mean load accordingly. The load adjustment scale is calibrated in 2 per cent divisions. 5.0 Operatin g 5.1 Prior to start up the following checks must be carried out All preset pins are removed and stored The unit travel indicator is set at the correct cold setting. 5.2 During normal running operation a check should be made to ensure that the unit travel indicator is at th e correct hot position. 5.3 A periodic check during the first few month of operation should be made to ensure that equipmen t movement is within the travel range of the unit. Minor site adjustments may be necessary during thi s period.
