1 2016 IHHA 4-H Youth Horse Award Program 2016 marked our twelfth year for the IHHA 4-H Youth Horse Award Program. We had a tremendous application response this year. Our message and application packet reached all 92 county extension offices. This is thanks to a young lady we asked to help given she is the 4-H version of an Eagle Scout. Unbeknownst to us at the time, her mother worked for Purdue in charge of education and communication to the state extension educators. The selection of applicants to bring to the Indiana State Fair to be interviewed proved tough. Tougher yet was selecting the winner between the five candidates interviewed. What a great crop of kids. The finalist were: Holly DeLong, Hamilton County; Ryan DePew, DeKalb County; Tinley Jones, Perry County; Gage Rausch, Montgomery County, and Ashley Slayton, Clinton County. These kids speak volumes for our future. They were all well-prepared and have records of stellar achievements in school, 4-H, volunteering, and community activities. The IHHA 4-H Award committee was left in want of four more Haflingers to award. Each and every one of these kids was worthy of the award. However, with only one horse for one kid we were forced to make a decision. The 2016 IHHA 4-H Haflinger Horse Award recipient is Ryan DePew. Ryan is in five 4-H and other activity clubs. He has been an officer 4 years. He has shown Haflingers, Belgians, and Percherons. He has earned halter and driving championships. He earned grand Champion in ground driving. He is a highly active kid. He has done significant volunteer work for his age. Ryan wants to show his Haflinger in all classes including cart. 2 The 2016 IHHA 4-H Award Haflinger is W-Knockdhu HLH AHR (Wibo Van De Schuttersweg x Alayna HOST). Bred by Mike and Brandy Marron. Donated by Hickory Lane Haflingers. The IHHA 4-H Haflinger Horse Award Project has been a remarkable, ongoing, promotional success for the breed. We have awarded horses to kids that have taken them through various disciplines including pleasure, Western and English riding, pleasure driving, contesting, and various draft classes in 4-H and open shows. Some of the Award families have gone on to acquire more Haflingers and have gotten involved in exhibiting and breeding. These kids and their Haflingers have done very well competing in 4-H classes. This is remarkable given the overwhelming skew toward quarter horses. However, given the quality of both the kids and the Haflingers donated by IHHA members, perhaps it is not so surprising. Please take a moment to visit the IHHA Website News page to view the past award recipients and the donor farms. Make sure you let the donors know their gift makes a difference and that we appreciate their support and kindness. Finally, a special thank you goes to Makhalea Young and her mother Sherry Legg Young for helping IHHA get the word out. Again, the crop of applicants was incredible. As a point of interest, Makhalea was the National Clydesdale Queen a few years ago and she has been active in showing Clydes and Haflingers. Many thanks also go to those who served on the interview committee: Jim Arnold, Whitney Love, Melanie Prather and Glenn Yoder. Each brought their own unique perspective and did a great job with the kids. Oh, I nearly left off thanking the Haflinger hitch families. Following the interviews, names were drawn from a hat to place the kids with hitches to help with the 6-up that evening. This is the second year we have done this. It has been a great opportunity for the kids to learn about showing draft, throwing harness, etc. Volunteer hitches are easy to come by. The kids are great workers. They are keenly interested and a pleasure to have around translation, FREE LABOR. 4 The objectives of this program are: To teach horse interested families about the versatility of the Haflinger. To help youth obtain, raise and show a purebred Haflinger at their local county fair and/or state fair event. To learn and develop the responsibilities for caring for a young horse. To learn the care, feeding, and health requirements of the horse at different ages. To learn about the economics of raising a horse as a business venture. To develop creative communication skills and promotional information for display about the Haflinger horse and the IHHA organization Several facts to consider about this program: The youth can have the experience of raising a Haflinger without the large cash outlay of purchasing an animal. The IHHA 4-H Youth Award Program is ideal for teens that have worked with an older horse and are looking for new challenges. The Program provides such a challenge through working with and training a young horse and showing it. The documented expenses from receiving and raising the horse (feed, health care, hoof trims, etc.) and any show winnings, publicity income, etc. are to be documented and this information shared with the breeder on a quarterly basis. 5 Indiana Haflinger Horse Association 4-H Youth Horse Award Program The requirements for this program are a completed and legible application, letters of recommendation, proper housing for the horse, and an interview with Indiana Haflinger Horse Association (IHHA) 4-H Youth Horse Award Program Committee (hereinafter referred to as Committee ) and owner of the horse to be awarded. The Committee and the horse owner reserve the right not to award the horse if they feel the youth is not ready for this responsibility as described in the Program outline. This would ensure no danger to the youth or mistreatment of the horse. The IHHA will be providing one purebred, registered Haflinger horse to an eligible 4-H youth (ages as of 1-January of the calendar year with at least two years 4-H experience) for their care, feeding, training and showing for a period of two years to promote the qualities of the Haflinger horse. Finalists will be selected and will be notified by the Committee. Finalist must be present at the Award Ceremony which is normally held on the Saturday of the final week of the Indiana State Fair. The selected 4-H Youth for the Award will be responsible for having the animal properly cared for and shown at their local county fair and/or state Haflinger event. The youth will be responsible to the breeder, providing updated information as to the health and show events that the animal has participated in during the year. The local county 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator, and/or Extension Agriculture Educator and/or Equine Specialist will assist in proper recommendations for the general care and health of the animal. During the first year of receiving the animal, the youth will be encouraged to attend local, regional, state and/or national Haflinger events, display and distribute marketing items that promote this project. During the second year of the project the youth is expected to show and provide marketing items that promote this project at the above mentioned events. The youth will also be given a free 2-year membership to the IHHA (Indiana Haflinger Horse Association). Ownership will be transferred to the 4-H member and parent/legal guardian at the Award Ceremony. If all requirements are not completed the program will be terminated and the horse will either be presented to another 4-H member or returned to the breeder. Revised February 2017 Page 3

6 The following requirements must be completed during this program: The animal is to be inspected by a local veterinarian to be proven sound and in good health at the beginning and conclusion of the program. The youth will record all income and expenses that are incurred with the animal on a monthly basis, and a quarterly report will be mailed to the breeder and the IHHA project coordinator. The youth will need to report on all local, county, regional and state shows that the animal was entered in and placed in for the year. Any photos, promotional shots and advertising of the animal will be forwarded to the IHHA for publicity. A media release form must be completed and on file with IHHA. The animals full registered name should be used in all media releases. An Extension staff member will inspect the housing, paddock and general barn facilities of the animal to determine that proper care is being administered to the animal. (This will occur at the beginning of the project.) In the event the animal is not being properly cared for, a notice will be sent to the project coordinator and a determination will made for placement of the animal in a different farm setting. Application Instructions - The Application should include the following: 4-H Horse Leader Recommendation: A signed letter of recommendation from your 4-H Leader must be mailed separately to the address below prior to the 1-July deadline. County 4-H Educator Recommendation: A signed letter or recommendation from your County 4-H Extension Educator must be mailed separately to the address below prior to the 1-July deadline. The completed application forms on the following pages with all the required signatures including your parent/guardian letter of support must be included in your application. Only hard copies of your completed application pack will be accepted. All pictures and /or diagrams, drawings etc. must be included in your application pack sent via US mail. No electronic submissions will be accepted. No details of the application pack will be accepted electronically. Please make sure your application pack is complete and in the mail to meet the 1-July deadline.
