3 1 Friction properties F.A.S.T. Test Machine 1.1 Friction mode test Preparation of the sample Select the material for the test and cut the sample, the dimensions for the sample are 1 inch x ½ inch or 1 inch x 1 inch Fingerprints on the active face must be avoided Take the initial weight and thickness of the sample.
4 1.1.2 Preparation of the disc Remove all traces of oil in a vapour degreaser Mount the disc Wipe the disc with clean tissues with acetone.!do not touch the disc face anymore! To run the test Prepare the sample and the disc according to the description above Put the LOAD ARM in position and place the sample in the testing position Place the LOAD ARM on the disc direction until the sample touches the disc Prepare the TENSION ROD Visually check the sample surface parallel with the test disc Once the sample is prepared, turn on the machine and the hydraulic circuit Release the wing nut LOAD CONTROL and adjust the friction pressure to 79 Newton Tighten the wing nut When the test is over open the DUMP VALVE, turn off the pump and DRIVE MOTOR Move the LOAD ARM to its initial position, release the CLAMP HANDLE and take off the sample. Weigh and take the thickness Clean the LOAD ARM Calculations Wear rate = (initial weight final weight) x density Friction constant = Report Wear rate (mm 3 / kwh) Material identification Initial and final weight (gr) Density (gr / cm 3 )

6 1.2 Fade test Preparation of the sample Friction mode test Preparation of the disc Friction mode test To run the test Prepare the sample and the disc according to the description above Start the drive motor Put the paper on the plotter and calibrate the plotter Put the LOAD ARM and place the sample in the testing position Translate the LOAD ARM on the disc direction until the sample touches the disc Place the TENSION ROD Visually check the sample surface parallelism with the test disc Once the sample is prepared, turn on the machine and the hydraulic circuit Draw a reference line with the X position button of the plotter over the paper With the pen on the left axis (0) position, turn on the plotter Tighten the wing nut (DUMP VALVE) adjust the pressure to 100 Newton Adjust the velocity at 1500 RPM (11 m/s) Control the temperature of the disc every 10 minutes. When the material loses coefficient, take the temperature of the disc, this temperature corresponds to the final fading temperature which the material resists to, with the conditions below When the test is over open the DUMP VALVE, turn off the pomp and the DRIVE MOTOR Move the LOAD ARM to its initial position, release the CLAMP HANDLE Clean the LOAD ARM Report Material identification Fading temperature at 100N Vel: 11 m/s Tº 290ºC (example)
7 Graphic F.A.S.T. Machine (example fading) Reference Link Engineering Company. Fast Machine Friction Assessment and Screening Graphic test In the graphic for fading test, the coefficient is not real. We only take to know the fading temperature. This temperature is produced when the material loses the friction properties.
