5 1. Introduction In this manual, you will learn how to maintain your car by following a step-by-step procedure, accessible to everyone. Basic car maintenance is easy to do; it is the same level of difficulty than mounting an Ikea furniture. You just have to know what to do. If you are living in a city and you don t have a place to work on your car, go to your family, or to your friend s house. It s always possible to find a suitable place. A simple sheltered space is enough. The author is convinced that you can save a lot of time and money, by allowing you to do your car maintenance by yourself. It comes down to changing a filter and replacing oil. It will take half an hour as soon as you are used to it, though it may take one hour and a half the first time. It is still much less than the time you could spend waiting at your car dealer. If you are doing it for the first time, dress with old clothes, and be patient! You have to expect to work in uncomfortable positions for a few minutes. But it is worth it! When you have done it once, you will already be able to do it faster, and you finally won t need this manual anymore. 5 The Child s Play VW Polo

6 2. Role of parts that need to be maintained What is the point of car maintenance? Why is it that useful? This chapter explains why it is important to keep your vehicle in good maintenance conditions. It shows the role of parts to be maintained, which is in direct relation with a diesel engine operation. You can skip this part if you are not interested and go directly to chapter 4 to start your maintenance. Motor Oil The oil lubricates the engine (an oil film between moving surfaces limits wear), it cleans it by bringing impurities in the filter. It evacuates the heat brought by combustion of the engine and by the friction between the moving parts. But oil deteriorates: it gets dirty and loses its viscosity with time and use. Oil filter The impurities found in the oil are captured by the oil filter in order to keep the oil as clean as possible. It has to be replaced because it fills up and clogs up. Air filter A diesel/air mix is required for the combustion. Air has to be brought inside the cylinders as well as fuel. The filter cleans the air as much as possible. 6 The Child s Play VW Polo

8 3. Scheduled maintenance Information about maintenance frequency can be found in your car s manual. Nevertheless, for more clarity, below is a table which shows the tasks that really need to be made, forgetting what is superfluous. We have adapted some values according to our expertise and the improvement of the components. What has to be done every km is considered as part of the basic maintenance. Everything that has to be done less often is part of the additional maintenance, and is in this manual for your personal information. We advise you to replace it after km anyway, because it deteriorates. This table shows the whole maintenance that has to be done on your vehicle. As you will not go to your car dealer so often, keep it as a reminder to know when you have to schedule an appointment to your mechanic to change the fuel filter, or the timing belt for example. It is important to keep an eye on these deadlines, especially the timing belt one (it can cause multiple damages if it breaks). You need to keep a book with your maintenance records. Each time you do the maintenance; write down the date, kilometers of the car and what you have done. Keep it in the glove box, to be sure not to lose it. 10 4.4. Oil filter Here, you can see the filter cover. Using a 32 mm socket and an extension, unscrew the filter cover. 26 The Child s Play VW Polo

11 When the cap is loosened, you can remove it by hand. The filter is attached to the cap. Beware of the drops of oil! Take an old rag to put under this part when removing it. Remove the filter from the cap by hand. Remove the gasket off the cap using a very thin flat screwdriver. 27 The Child s Play VW Polo

12 With the new filter, you received a new gasket. Replace the old one by the new one and place it on the cap filter. Make sure to put it perfectly in its correct place. Finally, put the filter in its housing. The small cylinder emerging from the filter should fit in the corresponding hole inside the housing. Screw the cap back to the filter housing, check visually if there is no any space between the cap and the housing. You filter is now replaced! 28 The Child s Play VW Polo
