2 Hi all, I sure hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather (no rain) we have been having. According to the weather man this is supposed to continue on through the middle of October. We had 7 bikes in the New London parade, thanks Denny and Cathy for setting this up. We had 11 bikes for the Ashland parade thanks Larry and Bonnie for setting this up. We were supposed to have eaten at the Varsity Grill. After a short ride through the countryside, we got there and it was closed. This after Donna made 2 calls to make sure they were open. So we went to Granny's and had a nice lunch there.. A big thank you to Lawrence and Vera, John and Julie, and Brian and Jen for doing the summer picnic, also to Denny and Cathy for cooking. Denny should open up a cafe somewhere, he is good. Our team gathering is the 4th. The leaf ride is coming up on the 10th of Oct. led by Larry and Norma. Dinner ride to Boondocks on the 15th. The Halloween party is at our place on the 24th of Oct. And a TBA ride on the 25th. Well I guess I have rambled on long enough, keep the rubber side down. 3 QUICK TIPS: Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS) How Does ABS Work? If either of a motorcycle's tires loses traction and skids along the road surface during braking, the rider might lose control of the motorcycle. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps maintain traction by preventing the wheels from locking up as the tires approach the maximum braking limit. With ABS each wheel has a speed sensor that sends signals to an electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU is a computer that monitors the rotational speed of the wheels and modulates brake pressure to provide maximum braking capacity in a given situation while maintaining maximum traction. If one of the wheels is on the verge of corning to a sudden stop (a skid), the ECU will decrease the braking force in order to prevent the skid. To decrease braking force, the ECU sends a signal to open a relief valve that reduces hydraulic pressure in the braking system on that individual wheel. When the tire regains traction and starts spinning again. the EGU sends a signal to restore the hydraulic pressure in the brake line, which in turn, increases the braking power. This process occurs rapidly and repeatedly, causing the brakes to pulsate when the ABS is in use. It is important to note that this process occurs independently between the front and rear wheels. If the ABS system fails, an indicator light will come on, and the brakes will still work, but without the ABS function. What Can and Can't ABS Do? Several studies have cited improper braking as a pre-impact factor responsible for some motorcycle crashes. Some manufacturers offer ABS as an option on certain models, allowing consumers to choose ABS technology to help them brake more effectively. ABS is not guaranteed crash prevention, but in certain situations it can help riders avoid a crash. ABS only works when the front brake lever and rear brake pedal are continuously applied during stopping, and not "pumped." ABS can quickly respond to a change in surface friction during braking and help prevent the rider from losing control. ABS's greatest benefit may be on wet or icy roads. ABS is most effective when the bike is completely upright and going in a straight line. The dynamics of motorcycles, which must lean to corner, prevents the ABS from assisting the rider in every situation. During aggressive cornering, ABS may not have the intended effect. Cornering at the limit requires very smooth braking, and the pulsing caused by ABS can upset the bike, causing it to low-side" and slide out from under the rider. It is important to note that ABS is not a substitute for proper braking techniques and common sense. ABS is not intended to shorten stopping distances on dry roads, so riders are not free to speed or tailgate in hopes that ABS will compensate for their poor judgment ABS does not allow a motorcycle to violate the laws of physics. 4 79257 We just returned home Saturday from our Western trip and are busy catching up and trying to settle into "real life". The trip was nice but it is a l-o-n-g way to the Grand Canyon (even by the interstates). Once we were there, we abandon the interstates and traveled state routes for the rest of the trip. We did almost all the national parks in Utah, zig-zagged up and down the beautiful mountain roads of Colorado, back through Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky and home. We travelled 6,626 miles in 19 days!! We saw some awesome country and some country that we could not figure out why we fought the Indians for it or why the Indians fought to keep it We are planning the Leaf Ride and have a tentative route. A pre-ride will be done before long. I just cannot get back on the bike right away! We will give the time and details at the Gathering. It will be a BYOBB-bring your own brown bag-for lunch. Enjoyed the picture of Chapter V members at the Labor Day Parade in the newspaper. Teddy Bear Ride is coming-remember to shop for stuffed animals and/or coloring books. Be sure to attend every Gathering with your GWRRA card to claim the next drawing prize Hi, We have had a busy month. Attended several chapter functions and even found time to go for a several day trip to Kentucky and Tennessee. We enjoyed the summer picnic with a nice ride through the area and a nice meal, prepared buy chef Dennis. A big thank you to the committee that put it all together. Both Labor Day weekend parades were well attended. We were not able to go to the New London Parade but those who went had a nice afternoon of fun and food. The Ashland Parade had quite a few entry s but there were a lot less people watching on the street than there were for the Ashland Bicentennial Parade. There are many more activities this year with the Halloween Party, Leaf Ride, Christmas Pageant, Christmas Party and other rides coming up. Be sure to join in on the fun. Larry & Bonnie, Editors (4)

Our Chapter Float project had to be scrapped for several reasons. The length and width of the float would exceed state law so we would have to buy a special road use permit every time we used it. If we were traveling over 10 miles we would need to pay for a State Patrol escort, plus the wide load banner that would have to be displayed on the back of the float would take away from the looks of the unit. With its size also comes a storage problem. Since storage companies charge by the square foot it would be quite costly to keep it inside. Probably the biggest concern is that the Chapter received a letter from a couple trikes kit manufacturers. I don t know how they got word of it but they stated they would void the warrantees of all the trikes in our chapter. Since they did not know which trikes would be pulling the float they would assume any of them might. Because of the stress that would be put on their kits by pulling such a heavy load they would not guarantee them. If those two companies are doing that we must assume that others will follow suit. It seemed like a good idea and a great winter project when it was first brought up but as you can see, it is something our chapter cannot afford to do. Larry O. Well everyone knows That I love a new product, and I have 2 of them for you this month. The first is called Life paint. It is marketed by Volvo, Yes the car maker, and manufactured with the assistance of a company called Albedo 100. Life paint is a washable spray on coating that dramatically enhances the light reflection ability of whatever it sprayed on. It dries clear to natural light, but shines incredibly bright when a directional beam shines on it. It is designed for Bike (pedal) riders. However the possible applications for Cycle riding are endless. From painting the actual bike, to all of your riding apparel. For the present Life paint is only available in the UK/European markets, but there has been a strong demand for it here in the USA. I will try to obtain some Stay tuned. The next new product I have found has been around for awhile (approx. 1 year), however it was never marketed in this fashion. This product is called NeverWet by Rustoleum. I say that this has been around for a while because it was originally marketed as a work shoe and heavy duty 2 part water protection system. One of the early problems the product had was that it left a white residue on anything that it was applied on. Rustoleum reformulated it and it is now a one part system, suitable for clothing, and other outdoor applications. My First impression is that this stuff is EXPENSIVE. The cheapest I found is an 11 oz. bottle for roughly $15.00 on Amazon.com. Plus add another 2 bucks for shipping, and it comes out to about $ or $1.54 per ounce. Compare that pricing to a standard can of Scotchguard camping and tent waterproofing $7.00 per 10.5 ounce can, it costs about $0.66 cents per ounce. A significant difference in price. Is the price justified. Well lets give it a try. As for its application and performance, I m glad that I ordered 2 bottles of Neverwet. These 2 bottles, were BARELY enough to cover my Aspen classic camper. And I was being VERY frugal in how I applied the liquid. I waited the instructional 24 hours for the solution to cure, and the next morning you could see the results. The streaking problem seems to have been resolved, although it still can happen if you put it on heavy. Testing the product proved that it does work. However does it work better than the cheaper Scotchguard product. The results are identical. I leave it to your own discerning wallet to determine if the difference (almost double in price) is worth it to you
