Chapter Director Tommy & Karen Brown Assistant Chapter Director Wayne & Kathy Hall Chapter MED Officers Keith and Sherry Sanders May Flowers Are Here!! Our May meeting was a very good beginning of the busy month!! We had 34 in attendance with a beautiful group of Bikes & Trikes in a V formation. Everyone had a wonderful time and good food and special visiting. What a sight it was to see all the beautiful bikes lined up on the parking lot for Sherry s pictures. Our drawing was for $20.00 going to Bobby Webb, $15.00 to Verlon Brown and $13.00 going to Dillon Turner. Treasurer Art & Fay Reese n5tjt@ccewb.net Newsletter Editor Kathy Hall khall31@suddenlink.net Chapter Educators Bobby and Mitzi Milligan scootermilligan@yahoo.com Couple of the Year 2006 Kathy & Wayne Hall Couple of the Year 2007 Alan & Judy Tucker Couple of the Year 2008 Fred and Sandra May We had 6 door prizes going to Larry Mcleod, Verlon Brown, Donna Martin, Carl Stimach, Larry Mcleod, and Joe Shepard. Art is still Carrying the Goldwing Nut Award but is Constantly watching for the next Winner.
Bob and Narine have been GWRRA members for 5 years. They ride a 2005 California Sidecar Trike. They have put many miles on the trike. I suspect they would have more miles on the trike if it had not tried to take a trip on its own! Mother Nature tried to ride it in When she finished the ride it was not in very good condition and neither was their house or cars. Yes, they were hit extremely hard by the 2006 tornado that set down in Marmaduke. The insurance company decided not to total the bike but probably wished they had after all the work was finished. Bob and Narine are very lucky to be safe and have everything back in order. The trike is repaired and they are currently looking forward to a trip in June to Colorado. I bet Bob is a better driver than Mother Nature! Bob and Narine have been married 20 years and have lived in Marmaduke during those 20 years. I guess they plan to stay there since they recently completed rebuilding in the same spot. They have a daughter that lives in Marmaduke and a son in Paragould. They have 5 grandchildren. Bob is retired from Anchor Packaging and Narine works at Teneco Automotive in Paragould. Bob and Narine have made trips to the Region H rallies as well as Wing Ding in Nashville. They enjoy riding in parades and making trips to the Smokey Mountains. Submitted by Keith and Sherry Sanders, MED Coordinators, AR-D
Happy Spring Days Ahead May is going to be a busy fun month. Beginning with the regular monthly meeting on the 4 th. The following Thursday, May 8 th Chapter D will have a Dinner Ride to Veanos at Marion. We will leave at 6:00 from the Exxon on Commerce for anyone wanting to ride down together, otherwise we will be there at 7 PM We hope the weather permits us to ride our bikes. Big Thanks to Keith & Sherry for this planned ride. Everyone interested in planning a dinner or ride, just do it and let us know so that we can get it out on . Thursday May 8-10th th will be the Tx District Rally in Corpus Christy for anyone interested in going. Send out some s and we will see if anyone else is planning to go and make a plan to travel together. May will be the Arkansas District Rally to be held in Harrison this year. Some of Chapter D will be going as early as Thursday and some will not be going until Friday or Saturday morning. Again send out some s if you are interested in going and want to hook up with someone to ride down with. 5 Keith and Sherry Sanders, MED Coordinators, Chapter AR-D Chapter D had 8 members attend the Region H Rally in Marshall Texas April Art and Faye Reese, Denzel and Pat Smith, Jones and Donna Martin and Sherry and I had a great time while in Marshall. With the exception of some strong wind on the trip down we had great weather, and best of all we all made it there and back safe and sound. I think Art had plans of being able to award the WING NUT to someone but that did not even happen. He had to bring it back with him! There were several vendors so we all came home with more than we took. We also came home with more great memories then we had when we left Jonesboro. Jones and Donna and Sherry and I entered the bike show. The Martin s won first place in the 1500 custom bike show and we won first place in the 1500 trike special show. Hot Springs was the Arkansas Chapter with the most members at the rally. Let s all try to have Chapter D bring that honor home next year! Speaking of Rallies Remember the 23 rd - 26 th of May is the Arkansas Rally in Harrison. I noticed a link that has been added to the site that shows some great rides in that area. The link even tells you how many curves are on each route. If you have not seen that yet you should take a look. Several members have been working on a chapter pride booth that is going to be impressive. We need someone to plan something for the talent show or dress competition. I am sure if you put the word out someone will help. As we all know there are not many day rallies this year so I hope we have a great turnout from chapter D at the Arkansas Rally. We also need to remember that Chapter A will have their Rally May 31 st in Little Rock. Last year they had a great rally and I am sure this year will be as good or better. Thursday May 8 th Chapter D dinner ride will be going to Vino s in West Memphis for Italian food. They also have great steaks, so I am told. I plan to see if that is true! If you have not been on one of the dinner rides you have missed a good time. Everyone puts the name of a restaurant they would like the chapter to go for the next month in a box, and then one place is drawn at random. Last month we had 14 attend and hope to have more this month. Come with us on this dining adventure and put your favorite restaurant in the box.

This month s 2 nd Thursday night dinner is in Marion at Veanos, an Italian Restaurant. We are meeting at the Exxon Station on Commerce Dr. at 6:00 P.M. then proceed to Turrell and meet with John Reeves and he will lead us to Marion. We invite everyone to go and enjoy the time of fellowship with our fellow Goldwingers. We have had a great time at these dinners. This past month was a good month for 2 of our members. L. D. Cook sold his 1500 bike and bought a 2005 GL1800 Black Cherry goldwing. Kathy Hall sold her 1500 trike the first day that she put a sign on it and set it at her place of work. If anyone knows of anyone wanting a 1500 goldwing, Keith Sanders has a 1989 for sale. His phone and address can be found on Chapter D s website, he is the MED Coordinator. There were 2 winners in the bike show at the Region H Rally, Keith and Sherry Sanders and Jones and Donna Martin. Keith and Sherry won 1 st in the 1500 Show Trike and Jones and Donna won 1 st place in the 1500 Custom Bike. Way to go Jones, Donna, Keith and Sherry from Chapter D, this was the only bike winners from the State of Arkansas. The Arkansas District Rally is May at Harrison, Ar. Keith and Sherry Sanders is going to leave Friday morning. If anyone would like to ride to Harrison with them you will need to contact them. Their phone and address in on our chapter web site. I will be leaving to go to the rally Sat. morning, May 24 at 6:00 a.m. from the BP station on 49 south and Parker Rd. Anyone that would like to ride with us or meet us on the way just give me a call or me. Chapter A s Rally in Little Rock is May 31th. Plans are to leave the BP station on 49 South and Parker Rd. at 8:00 A.M. This is one of the better rallies, and they are serving catfish. The ABBA Spring River Rally in Hardy is May 10. The activities begin at 10:00 on Sat. morning. There will be a bike show plus other events. The Magnolia 2008 Blossom Festival is May 16 th and 17 th at Magnolia, Ar. There will be a lot of different activities at this festival. May 10 th is the Patriots 2008 Freedom Run in Paragould, Ar. May 16 th -17 th is the date for the NEA Clinic Dare to Ride Biker Classic in Jonesboro, Ar. Chapter D is going to meet at Front Page Café at 8:00 A.M. for B fast then proceed to the NEA Woodsprings Clinic on Parker Rd. Chapter AR-D Directors Tommy and Karen Brown
EDUCATORS CORNER The season is here. I am sure each of you have noticed the increased traffic flow and the number of bike out there. I hope with the long wait we each have prepared for the season. Preparation is more than getting our rides in good service condition. In fact there is a more important factor than the bike itself. We must be mentally prepared. We must reflect on our own experiences or lack thereof. As many of you have years and years of riding and miles and miles behind you is it possible to become complacent? You better have answered yes or you will have told yourself a lie. It is human nature to think you are really good at riding. However, many make mistakes over and over and that leasds to trouble. I am not the perfect eaxmple and you will probably never find one either. We must always be aware of our surroundings and our short comings. I am attaching some statistic for your review. All I ask is for you to read the facts involved. Let's be safe and have a great season. Bobby and Mitzi Milligan Chapter "D" Educators
Motorcycle Accident Statistics More: Motorcycle Safety Page Technical Articles Page Motorcycle Fatalities Increasing: Read the October 2001 full report " Fatal Single Vehicle Motorcycle Crashes" (DOT HS ) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); a study recently conducted on motorcycle accidents and safety Here's a summary of NHTSA DOT HS Single vehicle motorcycle crashes account for about 45 percent of all motorcyclist fatalities. More than 38,000 motorcyclists have died in single vehicle motorcycle crashes between 1975 and The report claims to provide data for insight into possible causes for these fatalities. According to the report, from 1990 through 1999, there were a total of 11,038 fatal single vehicle motorcycle crashes. During that same time period, there were an estimated 294,000 non-fatal single vehicle motorcycle crashes. Of these, an estimated 39,000 involved property damage only and 255,000 involved injuries. Motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle motorcycle crashes decreased each year from 1990 to 1996, reaching a historic low of 937 in 1996 and again in In 1998, the fatalities increased to 1,042 (11.2 percent increase); in 1998 and in 1999 they increased to 1,140 (9.4 percent). The overall increase in motorcyclist fatalities from 1997 to 1999 was 203 (21.7 percent). Report Conclusions: Findings from the FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) data illustrate possible reasons for motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle motorcycle crashes: Helmet use among fatally injured motorcyclists below 50 percent More motorcyclist fatalities are occurring on rural roads High blood alcohol levels are a major problem among motorcycle operators Half of the fatalities are related to negotiating a curve prior to the crash Over 80 percent of the fatalities occur off roadway Undivided roadways account for a majority of the fatalities Almost two thirds of the fatalities were associated with speeding as an operator contributing factor in the crash Almost 60 percent of motorcyclist fatalities occur at night Collision with a fixed object is a significant factor in over half of the fatalities Braking and steering maneuvers possibly contribute for almost 25 percent of the fatalities More riders age 40 and over are getting killed Almost one third of the fatally injured operators did not have a proper license 1998 Motorcycle Facts: 2,284 motorcyclists died and approximately 49,000 were injured in highway crashes in the United States. Per mile traveled in 1998, a motorcyclist is approximately 16 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile occupant. And 3x (times) as likely to be injured. Head injury is a leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes. In 1998, 46% of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash. NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of a fatality by 29% in a crash. In 1998, 41% of all motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes were speeding. Nearly one out of five motorcycle drivers (18%) involved in fatal crashes in 1998 was operating with an invalid license at the time of the collision. Motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes in 1998 had higher intoxication rates than any other type of motor vehicle driver at 31%. In 1998, 500 motorcyclists lives were saved due to helmet usage; 307 could have been saved.
GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION ARKANSAS Arkansas District Directors Dale & Carolyn Frieden Cowger Lane Phone: Dardanelle, Arkansas The Arkansas District rally Mountain Memories II is just around the corner. Your District Staff has been hard at work to provide a weekend of FUN for all who attend. We have some great activities planned for your enjoyment and plenty of vendors who will be in attendance. The city of Harrison is looking forward to their first GWRRA rally and you will be able to enjoy a weekend with your extended friends and family over the Memorial Holiday weekend. Don t miss it, I promise you will have an enjoyable time. We just returned from the Region H Rally in Marshall, Texas. The Arkansas District had a great showing at the rally with members from several of our chapters attending. Chapter E had 20+ in attendance (What a great turnout from Hot Springs) and the Arkansas District provided instructors for many of the seminars and training classes that were available for the attendees. With the rally season in full swing, it should be remembered the rallies would not be available without all the time spent by our many dedicated volunteers to provide you with the seminars and other activities we all enjoy when attending. They give many hours of their time to make your attendance a FUN and ENJOYABLE experience. Attend a rally or two this summer and while attending the seminars and other activities let those who are making them available know you appreciate their work. Our great GWRRA organization would not exist without all of our volunteers freely giving of their time and other resources to be there for us. The only pay they get for their efforts is a pat on the back now and then. Until next time, ride safe and Ride With Pride. Dale & Carolyn Our Goals Train our members to reduce risk. Improve motorcycling image. To increase motorist awareness Our Motto Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge
