GWRRA Chapter WA-V May 2018 Washington District Newsletter Meets 1 Thursday 6:00pm Chapter V Valley Wings News Chapter Directors: Meets 1st Tuesday 6:00pm Joe & Patti Diambri Rainbow Cafe E Main Auburn, From the Chapter Director April Showers Bring May Flowers Well let's hope that that saying is true as we have had our share of showers! For those of you that are like us being fair weather riders, we don't get as many riding days as those that brave all of the elements! We know living in Washington makes it tough for some of us to get our riding time in but seeing that is when we choose to ride we have to deal with it! Well it's time to go through things for the rest stop and make sure everything is in order as Saturday will be here before you know it! Speaking of the rest stop, we gathered all of the supplies from the Harter's for that today! The Harter's have been the ones to store supplies, open and close the rest stop, and make sure all was in order in the past. This year is the first time that I know of that they will not be involved. We want to THANK Ken and Marion for all their years of doing this for the chapter and for all their hard work! We will miss having you two there and all that you have done for the rest stop and chapter! Another note for the rest stop is that we did well. We don't have the exact total seeing as we have a couple of bills to give the Treasurer still but are looking at around $ and all that is thanks to those that have volunteered their time to help out! THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Our April meeting brought us 2 new members. Karen and Trish took my offer via to join us for our meeting, then we had a nice talk following the meeting as well. If any of you get the chance to talk with them do so as they have some interesting stories to tell! Karen rides a Wing while Trish rides the other kind of bike but have promised not to hold it against her! Both of them joined us at our maintenance workshop and while not bringing bikes to work on they did lend some elbow grease to cleaning up some wheels! Welcome to our Chapter Ladies!

Speaking of workshop's, we just had one! We had 15 people show up for a day of maintenance and just a lot of socializing! Now with the month of April just about history we look into May as we have our 2 nd Rest Stop May 12 th through the 16 th! We want to thank those of you ahead of time for volunteering your time again to help out your chapter! Should you not remember if or when you signed up check out the web site as it is up to date! Joe & Patti Diambri CCCCCCCCCcccccccChapter ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS: for our May ride. It s May already Spring is here and April did not disappoint in the April Showers department, we had a lot of rain. Hopefully May will bring flowers and good riding weather. Our April Chapter Ride had to be cancelled due to rain. I considered going on the ride in the rain but 2 hours of curvy roads and getting all wet, and then stopping for lunch with wet riding gear did not sound like fun. We are in this bike riding hobby for FUN, not being wet and miserable. Let s hope for good weather Our Spring Maintenance Workshop went well, we had a small showing but those that came over to Harters for the day had fun, with plenty of donuts and food to eat. Garry Alexander has finally taken ownership of Ken Harters 1500 Trike. Dennis led the effort to do a bunch of work on it to get it ready for Garry. New front tire, new battery, some wiring fixes and a good cleaning. We enjoyed having Karen and Trisha with us for the day as they were a big help in cleaning and polishing wheels that were removed. Trisha worked on Garry s front wheel making it shine like never before, Karen jumped in and worked on my rear wheel that was very close to black it was so dirty. Once again I had my bike torn down to parade rest as I had a laundry list of things I needed to get done. Oil change plus a bunch of lighting and wiring fixes to do. The difficult part of doing lighting fixes is the wire routing, which requires major disassembly to gain access. As I stated in my article last month, I was not able to get it all completed in one day. I came back early Sunday and spent the better part of the day finishing things up and putting it all back together. I was pleased with the results and now all my lighting plus some new lights work great. The next workshop will be in September.

July will be here before we know it, the District Rally in Cashmere will be another fun event. We need to up our game as a Chapter and get more of our members there to enjoy it. With Halloween as the theme, we are going to decorate our campsite and show off our costumes. The District needs our sign up forms turned in as soon as possible. Joe has submitted the request to secure our Chapter Campsite area, we have plenty of room for RV s and Tents. There are some great roads to explore and Leavenworth real close to visit. The little town of Cashmere is very welcoming and has a nice downtown area where the Bike Show will be held. Make your plans now to attend this fun event. Ride safe and we will see you soon. Jeff & Cindy o Greetings from District Couple Are We Welcoming It seems like all the Chapters in our District have experienced issues with bringing in new members to our ranks. What are we doing that will make more motorcycle riders to want to join GWRRA and be active in our fun activities? We have been encouraged to bring more fun into our Chapters and in doing so, it will attract more to join us. Are we being welcoming to visitors to our Chapter Events and others we meet while out on the Bike? I recently came across a posting on Facebook from a guy who had just purchased a Blue 2018 Gold Wing Tour DCT. He went to the Florida District Rally to see what the GWRRA thing was all about. What he reported in this posting was not good at all. He was not impressed and even had to deal with one guy touching and pawing all over his new bike without asking him first. He basically said he was not interested in being part of GWRRA if that is the way he is going to be treated. He felt unwelcomed and out of place. This is not good for us. I would hope we here in the NW corner, in Washington State, will not disrespect or be rude to anyone new coming around to see what our GWRRA Chapters are all about. With the new 2018 Gold Wings now on the market and being bought up at a pretty good pace, there are going to be many new types of riders owning them. We need to make them want to be part of GWRRA with us. With the Mall Show coming up at the Silverdale Mall near Bremerton, we need to have a good showing and let the public see what kind of

great people we are. Chapter rides and our upcoming District Rally in Cashmere are other opportunities for us to put on a good showing in the public eye. We have fun and enjoy doing things together in the many activities we do throughout the State. This is what we have to offer others. We can bring in many new members to GWRRA, we have to be positive and welcoming to all we come in contact with. See you soon at our Chapter and District events. Jeff and Cindy Motorist Awareness Share the Road: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has provided safety tips to both motor vehicle and motorcycle drivers in anticipation of the summer riding season. Stefanie Valentic May 02, 2017

Summer fun is around the corner, and motorcycles already can be seen cruising in your local neighborhoods. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Government agencies and safety organizations are reminding both motorists and motorcycle drivers to practice safety while on the road. In 2013, 4,668 motorcycle riders and passengers died in crashes, and nonfatal injuries that year totaled 88,000, according to data published by the National Safety Council. "As more and more people enjoy the fun and excitement of motorcycling, we want to remind both motorcyclists and motorists to share the road safely," Tom Wolf, Pennsylvania governor, said in a statement. "Staying aware while driving or riding, obeying speed limits and being responsible will help keep fatalities and injuries as low as possible." The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reminds operators of motor vehicles that they should watch for motorcycles. Because many two-wheeled vehicles may be difficult to see, drivers should be extra cautious when checking mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes and at intersections. Motorcycles should be respected with the same rights as any vehicle on the roadway, PennDOT said. Drivers should leave extra space at least four seconds when following a motorcycle. In addition, motorcycle drivers need a full lane width to maneuver safety in all types of roads and conditions. Lastly, drivers should always signal their intentions during vehicle operation and never drive impaired. Motorcyclists also have a set of safety measures they should use while driving. PennDOT recommends: Be seen by wearing reflective clothing and put reflective tape on your protective clothing and motorcycle. Also, wear face or eye protection and a DOT-approved helmet. Use common sense by riding sober, obeying all speed limits and allowing enough time to react to potentially dangerous situations. Know your motorcycle and conduct a pre-ride check. Practice safe riding techniques and know how to handle your motorcycle in adverse road and weather conditions. "Sharing the road safely, staying aware while driving or riding, obeying speed limits and being responsible can help keep motorcycle fatalities and injuries low," said PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards in a statement. "Taking a training course under the watchful eye of a trained instructor also goes a long way in reducing the likelihood of a crash."

Greetings Fellow Wing Nuts! Greetings, the weather is getting warmer and I hope that your ride is up to the task of getting you from point to point. Which brings up the first point of this letter. The workshop was last Saturday and while the turnout wasn't that good, sometimes it's not how many turn out, it's just who! I had a great time as usual and worked on a couple of different bikes. I don't know why it is but I really don't much care to work on my bike but I really enjoy working on others. HMM! To make sure that you don't have any issues with your motorcycle, Honda has done a good job of putting together a schedule of when certain things should be inspected, changed or replaced. These are their recommendations and I really don't believe any one follows the service schedule put forth. There are many variances as to when to replace the air filter. Such as when riding in wet weather like we have. Maybe it should be changed more frequently. So, when should the maintenance be done? I change oil every three thousand miles. I ride a lot in all kinds of bad weather. I am always thinking of the last time I did change it. I know that if the mileage is divisible by three, then it's time. Easy to remember and when that doesn't work I have the records of everything that has been done to it. Mileage, date and receipts for everything. So, sometimes, I forget and then I can go to my manual and see what I've missed that really should have been serviced. My air filter needs to be changed. It was last done on 6/12/2016 at 31,000 miles. I have 57,000 on it now and the manual says every 12,000 miles it should be replaced. I'm a little late. It goes back to not wanting to work on my own. Well that and also it's such a bear to get to. Advantage GL1500! So, the workshops are great for the fellowship, and if you don't like working on your own bike there's someone like me to work on it for you! If you need something, let me know. It's really amazing how much knowledge there is in our chapter. And also how much your fellow chapter members will help, if asked. Refresh your riding skills take a MFS course. Practice defensive riding: Stay alert and focused on your surroundings, slow down when approaching an intersection, watch out for that vehicle wanting to turn left. Be careful out there. Ken/Marion
