Directors Corner Spring 2017 Welcome back to the! Spring is finally underway and the rust on our bodies shaken off from winter. A lot is going on with rides and events, particularly in the past month and continuing forward. On April 30, a last-minute ride was planned with a Maine destination and stop for lunch; it was supposed to be a pre-ride for the May Gathering. However, due to rain and cool temperatures, the ride was cancelled. Instead, Russ Powers, Gene Schneider, Dave Parker, Spike Michaud, and Chris Ferris met with us and our two Labrador Retrievers (Bryna & Blitzen) for casual conversation and laughs at the American Legion Post in Epping. Russ, Gene, and Dave were brave enough to ride their trikes, and Spike rode his convertible to simulate riding his Harley he said. Little did the guys know that it was our plan to gather as many NH-T together to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Chapter. April 30, 2016 was the initial Chapter Meet & Greet held at Depot Honda in Rye. Glad we could have a casual unofficial gathering on April 30. On May 6 & 7, four NH-T members participated in the Advanced Rider Course (ARC) held in North Billerica, Mass. Day 1 consisted of thorough classroom material presented by both Kevin LeBlond (NE Reg B Asst Director) and Richard Bernier (NH District Educator). Thank you to our friends PAO and Christine Odieno for providing the classroom space for Day 1. completing recertification of the ARC. Day 2 was the hands-on road training presented by Kevin LeBlond and assisted by Richard Bernier and Brenda Bollivar. As expected, the training was very thorough and helped us to improve on our riding capabilities. Thank you to all the instructors for a great ARC program. Thank you to Georgia LeBlond for coordinating additional logistics for both days. Congratulations to Carol George and Christine Davidson for achieving Level 3 of the Rider Education Levels Program, and Tom & Kathy Fallon for 2
May 20 was our well-attended monthly Gathering at the American Legion, including a special guest speaker Dick Bernier (NH District Educator). Dick provided a very thorough presentation for riding on Mountains, Hills, and Curves training. Upon the close of the Gathering, we took 7 bikes and 10 NH-T members up through back roads ending at Fogarty s Restaurant in Maine. Then departed heading Southeast to the Maine and NH Coastline (including Kittery Point & New Castle). This was a very enjoyable ride for all who attended. On Saturday May 27, six of NH-T folks met at Menard Motorsports in Brentwood, NH to conduct a pre-ride route inspection for the June 3 Open House ride options. Three different routes have been planned for the upcoming Menard Motorsports and NH-T Fundraising event to be held on Saturday June 3. One most certainly involves an ice cream stop. The goal of the pre-ride is to inspect and evaluate the route selected to ensure the road conditions are safe and capable of accommodating a large group of bikes. The routes were designed using a series of tools including Garmin Basecamp and Google Earth. Once created, it is then necessary to ride the routes. Russ was positioned with his trike following the Road Captain (the NH-T CD), then Mark (because he likes the left lane), Carol, and Rudy to follow, with Chris as the tail bike. Hand and arm signals were in use, as usual, due to two riders with no CB radio. The one-hour ride was handled very well by all with only one correction made for the June 3 Open House. The second ride is a bit longer, approximately 1-hour, 20 minutes, heading Route 107N, then East, then south through Newmarket, Newfield s, all back roads. Ended up being a very nice ride with all who participated. The first and third routes may accompany an Ice Cream stop, two different Ice Cream locations. 3
On Saturday June 3, we will CO-HOST the Menard Motorsports Open House. Shawn Menard is conducting a fundraiser on behalf of Chapter T. For every motorcycle that receives a NH State Inspection, Menard Motorsports will donate $5 back to NH-T. This is going to be a fun event that is open to the Public and all are welcome. The event will include three different group ride options (including an ice cream ride option), Food on the grill at Menard s, 50/50 raffle, revolving NH State Inspection and service if needed, along with great company by NH-T and Menard s staff and family. We hope you will come out to Menard Motorsports on June 3 to enjoy the activities and company and to support our fundraising! Our next Gathering is scheduled for June 10. If the weather is good, a ride will likely occur immediately following. We look forward to seeing you on the road! Tom & Kathy Fallon NH-T Chapter Directors Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 4
Oh, what a beautiful morning... Oh what a beautiful day! For some, that may be a most memorable song, however, for the GWRRA NH-T group who rode on Saturday May 20, 2017, that was the perfect description for our experience. Seven bikes and ten riders left the America Legion at around 11:20am and rode east on NH 27 before gazing at some of New Hampshire's most amazing scenery. The ride was rich in both visual delights including rolling hills, green pastures, beautiful homes, historic homes etc. In addition, the smell of fresh lilac, recently cut lawns and many other delightful natural nose candy was with us over several roads over which most of us had never traveled. We took a short break for lunch in South Berwick at Fogarty's Restaurant which was wonderful, to say the least. For the first time ever, I had a Haddock Rubin. Never heard of a Haddock Rubin, nor had I until I tasted this tasty original sandwich. Another in the group proclaimed the Cheese Steak Sandwich was the "best ever". We continued the ride on full stomachs toward Kittery before heading to Portsmouth, NH passing Prescott Park as it readied for a concert and continuing to points south. The ride along the ocean for miles was just what the doctor ordered to send us on our way back toward each of our separate destinations. For those who didn't experience this wonderful ride, there's only one comment this group can offer. "We are very sorry". However, everyone is welcome on the next ride which promises to hold untold similar experiences. Dave Parker NH-T Charter Member 5
Recollection of a ride After a very enjoyable Gathering on Saturday May 20, Chapter T had a wonderful ride in excellent weather, great friends and wonderful roads, and as always, a good meal lol We left the Legion a bit after 11, with 10 members including our newest member, Mark Anttila, on 4 bikes and 3 trikes headed for Fogarty s in S. Berwick for lunch. What a wonderful ride it was. Our guide and ride planner, Tom Fallon, selected a wonderful route to S. Berwick on all the delightful back roads. I must say he planned very well. I performed the duties of bringing up the tail. I have done this for many group rides and I must say that watching the group was a real pleasure. It looked like a group that has ridden together often and practices team riding. WOW. The group was always tight and staggered to perfection. Really fun to watch. May need to get a GoPro for the next ride lol. The route that Tom had selected had us crossing many busy intersections but the group only had about two instances where one or two bikes got stuck briefly in traffic. Great performance for sure. Pretty good by the team. Fogarty s is a great place for lunch. The staff seemed to be very accommodating and the meals all looked great. It was funny how we ended up sitting. All the bikes sat at one table and all the trikes at another There was no segregation planned and I don t think it was even realized until well into the meal. Great visiting and chatting with all that were there. One has to be very careful when you first get into the restaurant. They have a desert display that may make you want to order that first and have then come back and take an order for the meal, if you have room lol After lunch, the route took us on a nice ride over to Kittery and Portsmouth and down the coast. What a beautiful ride. Mark left the group in Portsmouth and Carol, Dave & Theresa and I left around N. Hampton Beach leaving the Fallon s, Powers and Christine to find the way home. What a wonderful day. To any of those who missed the ride we sure hope you can join us next time. It s all about having fun and making great memories. To Mark, hope you enjoyed the day and will return for more fun rides. Chris Ferris NH-T MEC 6
From the desk of the Assistant Chapter Directors Things We Celebrate in May With May nearly over, we celebrated two very special holidays this month, Mother s Day and Memorial Day, which should have meaning in each of our lives. Mother s Day is a time of celebration by honoring all the moms in the family. Did you know that Mother s Day is celebrated in different parts of the world on various days? Did you also know that the two most common months of Mother s Day is usually March and May? In the US, we celebrate the holiday on the second Sunday of the month in which Woodrow Wilson back in 1914 signed a proclamation designating it as a national holiday to honor all mothers. There are many ways to celebrate this holiday including sending of flowers and cards, and/or taking your mom out for a meal. My first job was working at a Golden Corral Steak House and I remember Mother s Day being one of the busiest days for the restaurant. If there are many miles that separate you from your mom, be sure to call and wish her a Happy Mother s Day. If you can visit your mother, be sure to give her big hug and thanks for all she has done for you. Memorial Day, celebrated at the end of the month, is often a day off from work for some of us. However, for others it is a day to mourn and remember those who died while serving this great country for us. Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress in 1971 and was formally called Decoration Day. I suppose you can say Memorial Day affects us all in a small way. What I mean is, without the ultimate sacrifice the men and women gave while serving, we probably would not have the freedom we do today to honor those who gave up two lives. The first life is the one they were living. The second one was the one they could have lived. For Memorial Day 2017, please take a few minutes out of your time and say a prayer for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for you and me. During both holidays, please be careful riding out on the roads. There will be a lot of folks out there drinking and driving so be extra careful. Ride defensively and DON T drink and ride. Wear ATGATT - All The Gear All The Time, and be sure your bike/trike is in excellent running condition (perform bike inspection often) so you can enjoy many miles on the road. Hey, I almost forgot to mention that on Saturday June 3rd, Menard Motorsports Open House, a NH-T fundraising event, will be held from 10 AM to 3 PM. Our Chapter has developed three fun rides for groups that will be led by NH-T Road Captains. Come early to get your motorcycle / trike NH State inspection completed. There will be plenty of food and a 50/50 raffle. Remember to thank your mom and remember those who have sacrificed their lives for you and me. Have fun and be safe everyone. 9 Chapter T Diner Dash Welcome to the NH-T Diner Dash. We hope this simple challenge will be fun as both a group and individual event. Credit is due to our own Anne Nassiff. To participate, you must register and contribute $5.00 to the Chapter T Treasurer, Christine Davidson. The challenge is to visit all the Diners in the list below. Proof of the visit is a copy of the dining receipt along with a photo of you and your bike/trike on the day of the visit in front of the Diner. The name of the diner must be plainly and clearly visible. At the end of the riding season, all entrants who completed the Diner visits, will be entered in a drawing for a yet to be defined prize. The prize selection will partially depend on the number of participants. In the event no one visits all the diners, the entrants with the most visits will be entered in the drawing. This event is open to all Chapters and can be started at any time during the 2017 riding season. Enjoy the challenge! 11 Rider Education Do you truly know the facts about your Goldwing Braking System? The following information is taken from the Honda GL1800/A Service Manual Combined Braking System (CBS) Honda has incorporated a hybrid braking system in the Gold Wing. It is known as a Combined Braking System (CBS) or what is more commonly known as a Linked Braking System (LBS). The Honda Gold Wing (GL1800) utilizes a braking system that equalizes the braking pressure and maximizes the braking potential of both wheels. The system allows the application of some braking pressure to front and rear wheels through the operation of either the brake pedal or the brake lever. The front wheel has two brake discs mounted on it; one on either side. Each brake disc uses a caliper that has three pistons. When the brakes are applied, hydraulic pressure is applied to the pistons causing them to contact and push the brake pads into contact with the disc surface. Increasing braking pressure causes the pistons to push the pads into the disc harder resulting in more friction resistance and more stopping power. The rear wheel brake operates much the same as the front except that the rear wheel only has one brake disc mounted. When the brake pedal is depressed braking pressure is applied to the two outer pistons of the rear brake caliper and the center piston of the left front caliper. When the brake lever is squeezed on the handlebar, braking pressure is applied to all three pistons of the right front caliper, the two outer pistons of the left front caliper and the center piston of the rear caliper. The CBS allows the rider to apply both brakes with the actuation of either lever or pedal. When both lever and pedal are used in synchronous action maximum braking potential can be achieved. The best way to stop a motorcycle, especially a machine the size of the Gold Wing is to use both brakes fully without locking either wheel. The rider must continually practice normal stop brake application as well as emergency brake application to be able to stop the Gold Wing effectively and efficiently without skidding either wheel. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) ABS is not designed to be used as a normal braking system. It is only activated when wheel lock-up is sensed by the ABS Control Unit. The system is designed to assist the rider with braking during low traction conditions such as a wet or loose surface; specifically, when one wheel begins to cease rotating or skid. The ABS accomplishes this without rider input. It continually monitors the speed of each wheel. When it detects a large decrease in expected rotational speed it will pulse the brake(s) for that wheel. Pulsing means that the brake pressure is reduced and reapplied repeatedly until the wheel regains rotational control or the speed at which it should be turning. The ABS operates the 11
same in your automobile. This means that the stop will be safer, albeit longer. As the ABS allows the wheels to continue to rotate the distance required to come to a stop lengthens. On the surface, this would imply that the rider can apply any amount of braking pressure (read max pressure or brake grab) and be assured that the wheels will not skid. Although this may be the case in a straight-line stop, the principles do not necessarily apply when in a turn. The wheels will be turning at different speeds and application of the ABS could cause a loss of control. In fact, when the ABS is actuated the rider has essentially lost control of the braking environment. The rider should maintain total control of the motorcycle in all situations. Using the brakes as they are meant to be used rather than to rely on the ABS computer is the best way to bring 1000 plus pounds of motorcycle, rider, passenger, and possibly a trailer to a safe stop. How does ABS work? ABS samples the wheel speed. Located on each wheel is a notched ring on the inside of the brake disc. A wheel speed sensor located on the frame/fork near the wheel samples the speed at which the ring revolves. The wheel speed sensor transmits the wheel speed readings to the ABS Control Unit which can detect a change in wheel speed (wheel speed changes rapidly/slows and is about to stop rotating). If such an indication exists, the ABS Control Unit will adjust the pressure applied to the brake caliper through either the front ABS Modulator or the rear ABS modulator, as appropriate, to ease hydraulic pressure/ braking input and continue proper wheel rotation. Normal braking will not activate the system. Many riders will argue that the ABS will stop the motorcycle in a shorter distance. This is not true if the rider is applying the hydraulic service brakes as expertly as possible. Since the ABS essentially releases the brake to regain wheel rotation, application of the ABS must add distance. Too much faith and reliance on ABS may cause a reduction in rider braking skill and may lead to brake grab. This would cause a crash in a non-abs equipped motorcycle by locking the front wheel. The ABS system should not be used as a substitute for improper braking technique. Only in emergency situations should the ABS be relied upon to stop the motorcycle and then in as straight a line as possible. Ride Safe, See you on the 10th. 12
