(817) AMA Gold Leader Club The Greater Southwest Aero Modelers, Inc. is a nonprofit organization. Membership is nondiscriminatory and open to anyone who agrees to abide by Club By-Laws. A condition of membership for insurance purposes is current affiliation with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Our flying field is located at 6903 Randol Mill Road, 1/4 mile east of exit 26 off of Loop 820 at N W Visitors are welcome whenever the gate is unlocked. Free flight training instruction is available to members from 6:00 PM to dusk on Monday and Wednesday while Daylight Savings Time is in effect. Regular Club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the McDonalds Restaurant, 769 Airport Freeway, Hurst TX The McDonalds is on the south access road just east of Precinct Line Road. Next Meeting: July :30pm McDonalds 769 Airport Fwy Hurst, TX President s Notes The summer heat is upon us. Several flyers make it to the field early in the morning. Just be aware of heat related symptoms, stay hydrated, use sun screen, and all the other precautions. As you know the early June rains made our field too wet for the scale contest June 3 but the re-do on June 17 was small but successful. We had pilots fly to US Scalemaster rules. There were a lot of club nonflyers and non-club visitors; Jim and Tommy served up the traditional GSW lunch. The mph gusty wind didn t keep any one grounded since it was right down the runway. The club profited about $40 for the event. See Lawrence s article for details and winners. Lewie Moore and Dave Ek have located a float fly lake for us south of the Hurst Bell Helicopter plant. It will be available on Sundays only; we have to notify them when we plan to use it. Stay tuned for more details. Speaking of float flys, be sure to take a look at the club Long Jon with floats that is for sale. The plane is rebuilt and covered by Lewie, the little used Saito 50 4-stroke is overhauled by Barry, and the floats overhauled by me. It has traditional landing gear as well. It is a beautiful package; see Lewie Moore if interested. Be advised that HobbyTown at 746 Grapevine Highway, Hurst offers a 10% discount on all store purchases when you tell them you are a GSW member. Check it out. See you at the field. Darrell Abby, President FAA Registration Requirement Struck Down On Friday, May 19 the federal appeals court struck down the FAA s registration requirement for recreational model aircraft. The Court ruling is effective immediately. As such, if you have not registered with the FAA, you are no longer required under the law to do so. For those of you who have already registered with the FAA, you may be wondering what this means for you. We are currently working to obtain answers from the FAA and will share more information as it becomes available. Please keep in mind that this is a fluid situation and there is always the possibility of a renewed push in Congress to compel federal registration for model aircraft. If that happens, rest assured that AMA will continue to advocate for your interests and keep you well informed every step of the way. We have repeatedly argued that federal registration for our community is duplicative and unnecessary, as our members already register their model aircraft with AMA. In addition, our 80-year history of safe and responsible flying demonstrates that we re not the problem. We shouldn t be burdened by overly broad regulations. The ruling also bodes well for our pending court challenge to the FAA s interpretation of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft (also known as the Interpretative Rule). That petition, which AMA filed in 2014, is currently before the same Court that today rejected the FAA s registration rule and affirmed the strength of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft, otherwise known as Section 336. This gives us hope for our continued fight against the Interpretive Rule.

3 May s Secretary s Report The June business meeting was called to order by President Darrell Abby on, June 13, 7:30PM at the McDonald's Restaurant Precinct Line # Airport Freeway, Hurst, TX Business Meeting Minutes The May 2017 meeting minutes were approved as written by attending members by a show of hands. New Members/Visitors Joel Carlisle used to fly and is now getting back into the hobby. Scott Gunter has moved back from Houston and is a fixed wing flyer. Treasurer's Report Treasurer Bob McDuff was absent and this report was given by President Darrell Abby. All bills are paid. The trash contractor has been sold and our bill has increased. The water bill will be increasing throughout the summer months. Field Report Vice-President Lewie Moore reported that True Green treatments have improved the grass and the field is looking better than ever before. The mowing schedule has been increased to two days per week. They are Tuesday and Friday morning. A work day is scheduled for 9:00AM, Saturday, June 24. The trees that have been cut down on the hill need to be cut up and prepared for shredding. The north bridge across the drainage ditch needs rebuilding. The quad track needs general clean up of weeds and some debris. There are some rocks in the parking lot that need removal. Events Event coordinater Jimmy Stanford reported on the following events June 17. Scale Masters Regiional Qualifier. Lawrence Harvelle CD. July 1. Independence Day Fly-in. Chuck Rovell CD. Bring the family. Lunch will be served. Instructor's Report No one is currently being trained. New Business The quad track is improving more each week. We now have different tracks with an outer oval, a cross over through the center of the oval, and two short tracks inside the oval. Each is unique with different obstacles and shapes. More interest needs to be generated in the quad track and new members with an interest in FPV are needed. It was proposed that we advertise at the hobby shops. No RC of any type is permitted in Arlington's parks. We need to ask if the park authorities have received inquires about quad and drone flying and if they might direct those inquiries to us. Our dilemma is that quad fliers are organized but prefer to fly in a park where they set up a temporary course. This is permitted in Fort Worth parks. It is felt that they have no interest in joining the AMA. Old Business News articles and pictures are needed for the newsletter. Please submit them to Roy Baker, editor. The bi-plane fly-in went well with good weather. Bill Bradford will be taking orders for club shirts and hats. The shirts will cost $25.00 with your name embroidered or $20.00 without. Baseball caps will cost $ Bill is going to set up a post on the club website where you can place an order. Section D of the field operation rules, which are posted above the frequency board, has been revised to define designated flying areas. A motion to approve the changes was made by Jimmy Stanford and seconded by Dave Ek. The vote was unanimous. National Model Aviation Day will be celebrated at the fly-in scheduled for September. If you are flying a quad with a camera on 5.8Mhz, check the frequency board so that you don't interfere with another flyer. Name tags have been received and are in the refrigerator at the field. The yellow rules signs posted in the infield need to be refurbished. Steve Rogers will check services that can chip trees. Mike Kopf said he will have a model at the July 1 event that members can attempt to crash head-on with one of their own. A $10.00 fee will apply. Proceeds will be donated to a charity Mike's wife works with. Model Of The Month A small plane called a Cuda that was designed for crash testing was presented. 4 2017 TEXAS SCALE CHAMPIONSHIPS SCALEMASTERS QUALIFIER By Lawrence Harville The reigning Texas Scale Champion Darrell Abby does it again, this time with a new airplane. Darrell was by far in the lead and ran away with the title this year. There is only ONE WAY to stop the ABBY domination we have to out fly him and out build him good luck with that. WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR Darrell we re going to get you!!! Winner of the Advanced Scale Class Team Scale Winners Royce Lummus and pilot Ed Couch After having to postpone the contest for two weeks, it was great to see the guys who showed up and put it on the line. We were surprised by the light turn out but those that came walked away with a lot of first time trophies. There were MANY first at this year s event First Helicopter class, First Electric Class, Three first ever contestants and boy did they clean up, everybody talks a good game but we now have NO DOUBT who is the best Electric flyer in GSW and maybe in Texas. For his FIRST contest Doug Ordon showed us how it is done, he flew in every round, sometimes in pretty heavy winds with the smallest plane to ever compete. 5 In a class of his own Royce Lummus and his outstanding Tucano. Royce has done so much work on this plane it has to be seen to be believed. Royce brought several of his planes that are easily museum quality. I never go off the ground because of an alerion problem Texas Concourse Static Scale Winner Royce Lummus l Woody Lake flew well but didn t get to fly all of his rounds Texas Scale Helicopter winner Michael Roznick First time to have helicopters and Michael s first contest We did have a couple of mishaps that made us all SAD but waiting for next year Sonny s beautiful ME 109 lost a wing in flight and came down VERY hard. 6 Steve Nichelson came from San Antonio area, Long time GSW member who comes back each year-good guy - great to see him again.
