1 ` THE NEWSLETTER OF THE RIVERSIDE RADIO CONTROL CLUB EDIITOR:: JIIM SKII BRONOWSKII december 2016 Election time is here Ballots for the 2017 officers sent to membership Something has happened that has not occurred for a long-long time: For the 2017 year we have two club offices that have more than one nominee. The positions of president and vice-president have two nominees each. For the past umpteen years the elective offices have had only one volunteer apiece and the club members would approve those people by acclimation at the meeting. Because very poor attendance at our meetings, it was decided to mail out the ballots to all current members of the club to be marked and sent back in the included pre-addressed stamped envelope. It didn't seem fair that only the 8 or 10 members that show up for the meeting make these important decisions. Also the biographies and reasons for running of the four people competing for those offices were sent to the membership. All of the offices, elected or appointed, take up a great deal of time and effort. Some of these jobs take up many hours every month, so it takes dedicated members to fill those slots. If you're not involved with an office, take time to read the information about the candidates, look over the ballot, mark it and send it in. A great danger to any club, and to our country, is "apathy". It is a most destructive force. "All I want is a place to fly or a free country to live in without having to do anything," is a prevalent attitude. If most people feel that way you will probably lose both. Many members don't even read this newsletter that contains all you need to know about the field and what's going on with the club and the AMA because they don't care and that, my friends, is apathy. Those officers who work so hard to keep our flying field and communicate with the other groups that share the wonderful area where we are able to fly deserve your support and an occasional pat on the back. 2 Minutes of the November 2016 Meeting Call to Order: President Jeff Szueber called the regular monthly meeting of the Riverside Radio Control Club to order at 10:10 AM, November 19th, 2016 at Crowley Field. Minutes of the previous meeting: The minutes of the October 2016 meeting were approved as written and published in the November Prop Talk newsletter by the members present. Old Business: We held a "Quickie 500" pylon race at our field on 28th to 30th of October. It was a very successful event with 27 pilots competing. The races were fast and exciting. Many thanks to our club members who helped during the event. Oscar Weingart made a motion to create a letter of thanks to those members who volunteered. It was seconded and approved. We received a card from the F3B folks with a $300 donation to our club for shutting down the field for their event. New business: We have made updates to our Club s bylaws. There were some minor changes that needed to be made. One example of change was concerning the office selection process. There was a motion to approve the changes that was seconded and approved. Bob Jones mentioned that we need to get more club participation and support from the members for all the events that we have at the field. These functions are fun to watch, so just come out and support your fellow pilots. Nominations were accepted for 2017 officer positions (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Safety Officer). The voting will take place in December. The president will appoint the other officers. Oscar Weingart made a motion to ban smoking under the shelter. The motion was seconded and the resolution passed by majority vote of the members present. Program and Show and Tell: Jim Bronowski demonstrated his electric control-line handle which uses an inexpensive car transmitter on 2.4 mhz to control the throttle on the model. He attaches a control-line handle to the transmitter, hooks up the wires to the model and flies in circles. 3 By Oscar Weingart At the Field At our last club meeting, I introduced a motion that smoking should not take place under the shelter in our pit area. This motion was passed by a small margin, and thus became a field rule of our club. Now, I want to stress that the guys who smoke at our weekly Tuesday/Thursday senior flying and political discussion sessions are fine gentlemen and longtime club members, who are very helpful and would give you the shirt off their backs. It is just that, as a lifetime non-smoker, I find it very irritating to have to breathe someone else's secondhand smoke in order to sit in the shade. I had been kind of apprehensive about the first time I planned to show up on a recent Thursday, anticipating some kind of confrontation, but the smokers were considerately sitting outside the shelter and no mention of the matter came up. On that day, Chris Silver (who, when he is flying, camps out at the field in his vintage motor home), was flying a hot little F- 16 electric foamy fanjet. That baby really moved out, and was spectacular to watch. Big Jon De Fries, our current V.P. (who is running against Jeff Szueber for Club President), was flying his Hobby People Quest electric foam motor glider. He seemed to catch more thermals than I could with my similar RocHobby V-tail, but it was neat to see the two big gliders circling and sniffing for lift, along with two raptor birds. Remember Pearl Harbor I can vividly remember when I was just turned 8 years old, and we lived in a row house in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn, NY. It was December 7th, My mother was working in the kitchen, while listening to the news on the radio, and she started crying. "There's going to be a war!", she cried. (She could remember World War I, as a young orphan girl, living with relatives on the Lower East Side of Manhattan). She was afraid that my father would be drafted. In reality, she had little to fear, as USS ARIZONA Dad needed glasses that were about a half inch thick. Also, he was in an essential industry, making Tee-Shirts for the Army. So I will always remember Pearl Harbor. I also remember our 1990's vacation tour of Hawaii, and standing in the Battleship Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Reading all those 1100 names of the dead sailors entombed there made me cry. So I will always remember Pearl Harbor. And I remember Bandleader Sammy Kaye's popular WWII song: "History, in ev'ry century, records an act that lives forevermore. We'll recall, as into line we fall, the thing that happened on Hawaii's Shore. Let's REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR As we go to meet the foe. Let's REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR As we did the Alamo. We will always remember, how they died for Liberty. Let's REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR And go on to victory." So I will always remember Pearl Harbor.

4 The March Field Air Museum will hold a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Event On Saturday, December 10th at 2 pm. Pearl Harbor Survivor Frank Verano will share his story. He Joined the U.S. Navy on October 21st, 1940, and was aboard the Cruiser USS Detroit when it was attacked. Also at the March Field Air Museum, on Wednesday, December 14th, at 7 pm, the Inland Empire Aviation Roundtable will feature retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Saul Anshen, another survivor, who went on to fly 50 missions in B-24D Bombers from Italy with the 15th Air Force. Incidentally, on the the museum's flight line, you can see one of the BT-13 WWII Basic Trainers which was modified to resemble a Japanese "Val" Dive Bomber for the Film "Tora, Tora, Tora", about the Pearl Harbor attack. Doris and I wish everyone a joyous holiday season, Oscar Stuff you need to know about Electric Motors Motor Specifications When shopping for RC electric motors, it's important to understand what all those numbers and specs really mean. Voltage Constant Kv is the "Voltage Constant". This is how many RPM's the motor turns for each volt applied. Actually, it's a tad less because motors aren't 100% efficient. For example, if you apply 12volts to a 200Kv motor, it will turn at just under (12 x 200) 2400 RPM's. Torque Constant Kt is the "Torque Constant". For all motors, Kt= 1355/Kv. You'll have to ask someone smarter than me where the 1355 comes from, cause I don't have a clue! Just accept it for what it is. In a nut shell, this means the faster the motor spins for a given voltage (Kv), the lower the output torque will be (Kt). Outrunners brushless motors generally have a lower Kv, which in turn produces more torque at a slower speed for spinning those larger props. The opposite is true with inrunners. No Load Current Io is the "No Load Current". This is the amount of current it takes to spin the RC electric motor with no prop. For example, if your motor is pulling 25Amps, and the Io is 2Amps, then you really only have 23Amps turning the prop.

5 Terminal Resistance Rm is the "Terminal Resistance". This is the internal resistance of the motor measured in Ohms. The higher the Rm, the less efficient the motor is. Current and Power The maximum current and power is what determines how large of a prop and what size plane can be used with the motor. Simply multiply the current by the battery voltage to get power. The larger the propeller's diameter and pitch, the more current the RC electric motor will draw for a given RPM. For example, the 200Kv motor will run at 2400 RPM's regardless of whether it has a 10x6 prop or a 11x5 prop. But, the 11x5 prop will cause the motor to draw more current. Drawing too much current will destroy the motor. How Much Power Do You Need? The manual for most ARF'S and kits these days make it really easy for you by recommending a specific motor. For marketing purposes, they will obviously recommend the specific brand of RC electric motors that they are affiliated with. If you'd rather use a different brand all you have to do is find another motor with comparable power and KV rating. If you don't have this reference, or are working on a glow to electric conversion, then you'll need to estimate how much power you will need. It is accepted by most in the hobby that 100 Watts/lb is a darn good "estimate" for the power required for an average sports/aerobatic RC airplane. If you plan to fly high alpha 3D maneuvers you'll want to bump that up to maybe Watts/lb. You may want to lower this number for a high lift trainer type airplane. But 100 watts/lb is a good starting point if you going at it blind. What about the other components? Nailing down which RC motor to use is only one piece of the puzzle. Equally important is choosing the correct size electronic speed control and battery. It s that time again; time to send in our 2017 dues. Annual fees are due by the end of January. The annual dues are $50 for an Open membership and $10 for those under 18 years of age. Fill out the form, cut it out and mail it with your dues to Larry s P.O. Box. A check is the preferred method of payment as it makes Larry s job so much easier. Again, if you have a hardship let Larry know. He can help you work out a payment option. Just to let you know, Larry doesn't usually cash the checks until he has number of them.
