The New Year should bring some interesting changes in the hobby. We confront the New Year like our new president with the stark realization of a recession. How will that affect our hobby? Will we see prices drop? Will we see some shops/suppliers go under? Will modelers go to the field less often? Yes, it will be a very interesting year. Our holiday party at J&R s Steakhouse seemed to be quite a success. We filled the room to capacity with 50 members and family. I thank you all that participated. The restaurant crew did an excellent job of keeping us well fed and liquefied! The food and drink were exceptional! Flying indoor continues at the Samoset Middle School on the second Sunday of Feb and March for those of you who don t head south or don t fly outdoors below 40 degrees. The January general meeting is SEFLI s flea market night. Bring down anything worth selling. I should have a number of goodies I get for product assessment that are generally new-in-box and have only been opened for brief testing or evaluation. Dues are required by the end of the month or you will be dropped from the newsletter list. Dues remain $25.00 for I will be collecting Wingnutz dues also at the same time but please have a separate check made out to me for $ Remember, you MUST pay your SEFLI dues first to be eligible to renew for the Wingnutz, unless you are a current, previous or retired Grumman employee. Please give our treasurer Rick Cascella the $25 SEFLI funds at the January meeting or by sending a check made out to SEFLI to Rick Cascella, 181 Beaver Dam Rd. Brookhaven NY See ya ll at the meeting or come on down to Samoset! Prez Tom January 2009

3 Long Island from the Air by Jim Perlowsky PAGE 3 Kings Park Psychiatric Center started in 1885 and was a self-sufficient community that grew its own food, generated its own heat & electricity, had its own LIRR spur, and housed its staff on -site. In 1954, the patient census topped 9,300. At its peak patient population, the old "rest and relaxation" philosophy gave way to pre -frontal lobotomies and electro-shock therapy. Those methods would quickly become ancient, following the introduction of Thorazine, the first widely used drug in the treatment of mental illness. As medication made it possible for patients to live normal lives outside of a mental institution, the need for large facilities diminished. By the early 1990s KPPC was operating as a ghost of its former self, with many building s being shut down or reduced in usage including the massive Building 93. In the fall of 1996 the few remaining patients were transferred to Pilgrim, ending Kings Park's 111 year run.

7 PAGE 7 Hop-Up an EasyStar or Any Plane Designed for a Speed 400 By Gil Carpenter Bob Erbe and I have been using the following system from Hobby City to hop -up our EasyStars. You could spend over a $150 for a Mega-Jeti system or just $50 for the system below. The inline brushless motor is a drop in replacement for a Speed 400. The only alteration required on the Easy Star is to find an alternate route for the third wire required by the brushless motor. I wasn't able to pull a third wire through my fuselage so I carved a channel along the top and into the cockpit; inserted the wire and covered it with lightweight spackle. The brushless motor, speed control, and speed control programmer are all available from Hobby City. I found it a little difficult to search this site for known items so I've included the location of each item as indicated below. SKU Description Price BRUSHLESS MOTOR HXT HXT 2835 (380S) 2200kv Brushless Motor $ Read the comments below the description of the motor about Easy Star installations. SPEED CONTROLLER TR_P25A TURNIGY Plush 25amp Speed Control $ Note: the motor is now a gold color rather than purple. ESC PROGRAMMER TR_PC TURNIGY BESC Programming Card $ Shipment International Air Mail $5.95 Taxes $0.00 Total $48.90 Prop adapters for the above motor are available with either a set screw or collet type from Hobby City. The mm adapters are sometimes referred to as simply 3.2 mm at other sites. Shaft adapter (with set screw) to suit 3.175mm motor shaft or Shaft adapter (collet style) to suit 3.175mm motor shaft PROPELLERS and BATTERIES Both Bob and I have been using an APC Electric 5.5x 4.5 prop on the EasyStar. You could also swing a 6x4 prop and get a little more thrust and better climb rate. An early static test indicated a current draw of 19+ amps at full throttle providing just about 200 watts of power. The climb performance is awesome! I could not find APC props on the Hobby City website. I ended up ordering them from Hobby-Lobby and paid an outrageous cost for shipping. Both Bob and I have been using 3 cell Lipo's with cell ratings of between 1800 and 2200 mah from different manufacturers. Rick Casella at the November meeting was promoting the Lipo's offered by this site based on cost and performance: Rhino 2250mAh 3S 11.1v 25C Pack $29.92
