To support the many aspects of the hobby including sport/fun flying, pattern, scale, and combat. To hold both club fun flies and open AMAsanctioned contests for interested members. To support a flight instruction program for beginning pilots. FLIGHT INSTRUCTION Flight instruction is available on a voluntary basis by the members listed below. They are not available at all times so please call in advance to schedule a mutually convenient time or talk with them at the field if they are there. The following are photos from the March meeting Jack built this little rubber powered model as light as possible. Only the top flying surfaces are covered with tissue. Even with R/C rudder and elevator controls, it still only weighs 0.9 oz. Jack also built this rubber powered free flight Stinson. When fully wound up and hand launched, it will climb making left hand circles. When out of power, it will make right hand circles on its way down for a typical flight time of about 4 minutes.

4 MEETING NOTES Monday, March 5, Meeting was called to order at 7:36pm with 15 members present. 1. SECRETARY S REPORT a. Report from February meeting read and accepted b. The 2018 Fun Fly Pilots Manual has been forwarded to all members. Let me know if you didn't receive. 2.TREASURER S REPORT See report previous page. Read and accepted. 3. FIELD DIRECTOR SREPORT a. The field is in good shape, ruts are forming on the road, as is typical. b. Incident report on prop strike with electric plane. One of our members reached out to catch a falling transmitter after placing his plane on the safety stand, and received gashes across the back of his hand. Reviewed safety procedures, and all members were urged to use throttle cut-off devices (see below for more information). Chuck made an article available on setting up the throttle cut in programmable transmitters. c. Make sure everyone acknowledges take-off and landing warnings. d. Be sure to give your plane a thorough check before the first flight of the season. It's a good idea to have someone else do a double-check. e. The field Spring Clean Up is scheduled for Saturday, April 14th (rain date: April 15th). Bring rakes, loppers, weed wackers, etc. Randy will bring the new Safety Tables to set up that day, as well. f. Please make sure the gray safety cabinet is open while flying at the field. It is opened with the gate key. 4. OLD BUSINESS a. Relationship with Fish and Wildlife is still solid, and we intend to keep it that way. b. F&W will call in advance if they are planning another brush cut. 5. NEW BUSINESS a. Tentative date for the Summer picnic this year is Saturday, August 18th (rain date: August 19th) b. Stewfest will be in October - date to be determined. c. Need to update the notices in the information cabinet at the field. Note: The key for this cabinet is in the gray safety box, so any member can access the cabinet. d. Does anyone have a suggestion for a new auction venue for 2018? Randy went through the issues we experienced last year. Let him know if you have any information on alternated sites. Meeting adjourned at 8:19PM 6. 5 More photos from the March meeting Randy with a new Electric Formula One Pylon racer. It is very lightweight and has a very thin airfoil. Randy estimates it will do between 110 and 115 mph. Ken's new fun sport jet, an Avanti S by Freewing. It's an electric ducted fan with twelve blades that revolve at over 40,000 rpm at full throttle. The system runs on 6S lipo batteries and uses a 100 amp ESC. The electric retracts have large wheels and trailing arm suspensions that make landing on grass airfields possible. Ken added a Dr. Mad Thrust Afterburner kit that lights up in three different colors - blue to orange to red - as the Jonathan showing his almost completed Bucker Jungmeister. What he thought was interesting is how much smaller the Jungmeister is compared to his Stearman. The Jungmeister is 23% scale, weighs 8 lbs, and fits in his car fully assembled. Jon's Stearman is 22.5 % scale, weighs 22 lbs and must be fully disassembled. The full scale Jungmeister weighs 937 lbs and Stearman weighs 1931 lbs.

7 Electric Plane Safety - PLEASE READ!!!! Electric models have introduced to the modeling community a new and unique danger in the form of an electric motor that is powerful, ready to turn at the slightest bump of the throttle stick, yet deadly silent. No exhaust sounds to warn us of the danger of a spinning prop, not even the blurry outline of a spinning blade we can see and stay clear of, just a sharp, powerful prop waiting to spring into action and ruin our day. Take a look at the options below that can help keep you safe: When the flight battery is connected, SafeStart takes control of the throttle channel, and prevents any accidental movement of the throttle stick from causing an unwanted motor start. All other control surfaces are activated as normal, allowing trim adjustments to be made in absolute safety from an unexpected prop strike. This is what can happen when you are distracted for even a moment. If this can happen to a senior, experienced, and safety-conscious pilot, it can happen to you! Install that safety device or set up your throttle cut (or both) now!

Laird Aviation Co. was started In 1920 with the purchase of the six-month-old Wichita Aircraft Co. It included its aircraft and the factory of the Watkins Manufacturing Co. In 1923 it ws renamed the Swallow Aircraft Co. It produced the Swallow OX-5. There were perhaps a dozen or so other models and variations but it folded after 4 or 5 years. The Travel Air Co. was founded in 1925 in Wichita, Kansas by former employees of the Swallow Aircraft Co. By 1929 it had grown from 6 to 650 employees. By that year, the company had built about 1800 aircraft of 16 basic designs. It had good success, but could not survive 1929 stock market crash. It was then absorbed into the Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Corporation. An interesting note is that the Travel Air officers included Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, and Lloyd Stearman all later starting their own companies. And going back to the Swallow Co., the designer later co-founded the Waco Aircraft Co. The Travel Air E-4000 model was designed to compete with inexpensive World War I surplus Standards and Curtiss Jennies. Its major feature was a forward cockpit wide enough to accommodate two passengers. Its rugged landing gear used bungee cords allowing operation on grass fields.
