3 Background The transport sector accounts for 25 % of the energy use in Sweden. Intermodal transports often have significant energy and environmental benefits compared with direct road transport Transhipments at the intermodal terminals and connecting road transports are however energy intensive and are mostly performed by combustion engine powered vehicles and material handling machines. Diesel locomotives are also used on terminals without electrified switching tracks In this area, there is a great development and improvement potential regarding vehicle design, alternative propulsion systems and alternative fuels. 4 Aim Describe the technology development of vehicles, handling machines and locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells. Describe how hydrogen infrastructure can be built up for intermodal transports with hydrogen-powered road vehicles, handling equipment and locomotives. Analyze the effects (energy consumption, cost and environmental impact) of an intermodal system of road vehicles, handling machines and locomotives at intermodal terminals, as well as comparing these effects with the effects of other alternative fuels and drivelines. 9 Conclusions In an intermodal system that has a high energy requirement, a transition to fuel cell vehicles can lead to both cost savings and reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. However, in those cases where there is a possibility of charging the vehicles, battery-electric operation is more advantageous. By building hydrogen refueling stations at intermodal terminals the hydrogen infrastructure and the development of fuel cell vehicles can accelerate. If the hydrogen refueling stations are located so that they can be reached outside the terminal area, the profitability of the stations can increase.
