1 2016 SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT NEWSLETTER EXTRA TRASH SERVICE NOW EVERY FOUR WEEKS Starting in January 2016, Denver will replace the Large Item Pickup Program and Cart Overflow Program with the NEW Extra Trash Service for all homes. This service improvement is part of Solid Waste Management s plan to help keep our neighborhoods clean as we transition toward Citywide cart-based trash service. Denver Residents can now put large items out every four weeks instead of every six. The City will no longer provide Large Item Pickup or Cart Overflow Service; instead every home will receive Extra Trash Service for large items and materials that do not fit in trash carts. To make this possible, the pickup areas have changed significantly. Please pay very close attention to the map and schedule on page 2 of this newsletter. Or better yet, take advantage of the new electronic service reminders that are explained on page 3. Extra Trash Service is designed to help residents dispose of large items from their homes like couches, mattresses, and branches, and any extra trash bags that may not fit in their trash cart. A maximum of 5 large items and 10 bags of trash will be collected per home per Extra Trash collection. Large Item Pickup EXTRA Cart + = Overflow TRASH SERVICE NEW!

Denver Composts is Expanding Starting in January, the Denver Composts program will add one more route and then two more routes will be added in the Summer of This means the program will be accessible to more neighborhoods and more participants than ever before. The Denver Composts program is a fee-based service that collects residentially generated organic materials like yard debris, food and non-recyclable paper. These materials are collected weekly and taken to a commercial composting facility that turns these materials into a soil amendment known as compost. Organic material is the single largest item that is thrown away by Denver households and accounts for more than 50 percent of what is taken to the landfill. Residents participating in the compost program have reported that with recycling and composting, they have been able to reduce the amount of trash they throw away by 50 to 75 percent. WHAT S IN YOUR TRASH? 25% Recycling 50 % Compostable 25% Trash 75% of what Denver residents throw away is good stuff that could be composted or recycled. WAIT TO PASS Avoid vehicle accidents by not passing collection trucks as they are turning into and out of streets and alleys. Trucks often need to make wide turns; give them time to make the turn. LIGHTEN UP Help prevent worker injuries by not exceeding the 50 pound limit for trash bags and extra trash. DENVER PUBLIC WORKS SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT 5

6 BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR! PROPERLY USE THE CART COLLECTION SERVICES TRASH, RECYCLE AND COMPOST There are now more than 104,000 homes (about 60%) in Denver that received cart-based trash service, and another 30,000 homes will be transitioned in to this service in Your black trash cart is collected weekly, purple recycle cart is collected every-other-week, and green compost is collected weekly on your scheduled collection days. Review your specific set out information to determine your scheduled collection days and set out location. Set your carts out for collection no later than 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection days. Return your trash, recycle and compost carts to your property after collection has occurred. You may set your carts out as early as the night before your collection day. Return your carts to your property within a day after collection has occurred. Only trash inside the black trash cart will be collected weekly. Extra Trash is picked up every four weeks. See page 2 for your schedule. Bagged trash may exceed the height of the cart rim with the cart lid partly open to 45 degrees. Never place trash or recycling on top of the cart lid.
