4 '--f cllbfis!de RECYCLING collection The City of Fayetteville makes curbside recycling simple and convenient for you. Recycling is easy and it's rewarding. It not only reduces the amount of solid waste we put in our landfills, but it also helps conserve our natural resources. One-ton of recycled paper saves the equivalent of 17 trees Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television or operate a computer for three hours Every glass bottle recycled saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions Recycling saves trees. It decreases the amount of carbon dioxide and increases the amount of oxygen in the air.

5 Fayetteville provides weekly curbside collection of the following items for all residents who receive curbside garbage cart collection: 1 I i Rinsed metal food cans Aluminum beverage cans Plastic bottles, including liquid laundry detergent containers Glass food and beverage containers of any color Newspapers and all inserts White paper, including junk mail Magazines, catalogs, paperbacks and phone books Corrugated cardboard Paperboard (i.e.: food boxes) Gable top cartons (i.e.: drink boxes) Aluminum foil and clean aluminum trays Plastic containers stamped with the numbers 1-7 (inside a triangle on the bottom) Do not use your blue recycling cart for garbage or yard waste. Large appliance boxes must be broken down or cut to sizes under 3-feet-by-3-feet. 6 BETA1 FOOD AND BEVERAGE CANS I Place the lids of steel food cans inside the can for safety Rinse and crush recyclables to conserve space in your recycling cart Plastic lids or caps and any metal caps or rings should be removed and discarded PLASTIC BOTTLES AND PLASS Please do not recycle any plastic bottle that previously contained hazardous material that could come in contact with our workers, potentially causing harm. Examples of harmful products: Include motor oil, brake fluids, pesticides or anything with the poison symbol on it. BABLE TOP FARTONS ~emove p~astib lid and discard I Rinse and flatten.

7 NEWSPAPERS AND A11 I.MSERTS, YAIiAZlHES, CATALOGS AND WHITE PAPER Acceptable paper includes direct mail, junk mail (any color of printing or designs on white paper is acceptable), envelopes (including window envelopes) and white copy and fax paper, printed or blank. Please no checkbooks, hardbound books, carbon paper, paper with adhesive backing or used tissues. Shredded paper should be placed in paper bags. CORRUGATED CARDBOARD Remove all packing materials including any foam liners or food residue Completely break down boxes and flatten; do not simply step on them. Recycling helps to conserve natural resources and reduce air and water pollution associated with manufacturing goods. In addition, recycling can save as much as 50% of the space in your garbage cart.

8 YARD WASTE,COLLECTIOW lliuloeliwes Yard waste is collected at the curbside of your residence once per week We encourage the use of clear bags to help prevent mixing yard waste and household trash Make sure that your yard waste is free from any other debris Place all yard waste that can be containerized in an appropriate private container: - Clear plastic leaf bags, if available - City of Fayetteville 96-gallon trash can (96-gallon yard waste carts can be purchased from the Environmental Services Department located at 455 Grove St Call FAY for current pricing and delivery details) - Thirty-two-gallon plastic personal containers with strong handles and lids - Place excess yard waste in a separate cart or in bags

9 NOTE:. Personal containers and bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds when full Ensure that all yard waste is free from any trash. Yard waste and household trash go to different landfills and cannot be mixed Yard waste cannot be placed on the curb until noon the day before your collection or no later than 7 a.m. the morning of your scheduled collection day Improperly prepared yard waste will not be collected Remove yard waste containers from curbside after yard waste has been collected to avoid a citation for violation of the Environmental Services Code Place your containers adjacent to or behind your house in an inconspicuous location Contractor debris will not be collected DO not place yard waste nn \larant nr neighbor's lot. Rule of Thumb: If yard waste will not fit in a container or bags call FAY.

10 BULKY YARD WASTE POLLEETION Yard waste that cannot be containerized may be picked up upon request. Twenty cubic yards or more, or a full truck load, will be removed for a fee. The City will not collect debris generated by a contractor to include yard work and tree cutting. Call FAY for details. I! 11 Residents may also take yard waste to the Wilkes Road Landfill located at 771 Wilkes Road. For further information, call City residents will not be charged a fee for standard yard waste disposal at the landfill, however, a fee may be charged for oversized limbs or stumps. Recycled yard waste is being used for biomass fuel, mulch, animal bedding and other ways to produce energy.

12 LEAF SEASOW Do you have an abundance of leaves and wish not to bag them? Generally, your neighborhood will receive one loose leaf collection before Christmas and one after Christmas. Loose leaves will not be collected after Leaf Season has ended. Visit our website at for more information on pickup schedules or call FAY.

13 Solid waste collection begins at 7 a.m. on collection day. Carts should be placed curbside no earlier than dusk the day prior to collection and no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. GUIDELINES: Remove cart from curb the day that it has been serviced. Carts should be stored in an inconspicuous place, not easily seen, as viewed from the street. It also helps keep your cart clean Any material that may be blown around by the wind must be bagged.

14 City-issued carts and containers with tight-fitting lids and good handles are permitted for household garbage. Personal containers may not weigh over 50-pounds when full. Overweight personal containers will not be emptied. DO NOT PUT THE FOllOWlNlG ITEMS INTO THE GARBAGE CART: - Yard waste mixed with trash - Loose or hot ashes - Loose animal waste or cat litter (double bag it) - Dead animals - Unbagged packing pellets - Hazardous or medical waste, - Loose needles or syringes (place in a metal or hard plastic container with a lid before discarding. Example: Coffee can) - Concrete, rocks and dirt must be taken to the Cumberland County landfill located at 698 Ann St. or call for details. Remove your cart and containers from the curb the day that the container is serviced. Place your cart(s) adjacent to your house or in the backyard. Failure to comply may result in a fine being imposed on the violator as approved by City Council. Special collections are available for physically challenged persons living alone. 15 The green carts belong to the City of Fayetteville and are specifically assigned by serial number to each address. Do not remove carts from residence for any reason. DEAD ANlMAlS If you observe a dead animal along the roadway, call FAY and the staff will properly dispose of it. Please do not put dead animals in a trash can or dumpster or throw them in a ditch. PART REPAIRS If a cart is damaged while a service is being rendered or due to normal wear and tear, it will be repaired or replaced. Carts will not be replaced as a result of vandalism, abuse or odor. I 1 Call FAY to report damaged carts. Serviceable carts will not be replaced. 1

16 BULKY ihousehold POLLECTION Collection for bulky items is available in your area once per week. You must call for an appointment for this service. Bulky items such as furniture, appliances, miscellaneous metals, swing sets with no concrete on posts and other household items that are too large to be placed in the garbage cart can be picked up upon request. If you schedule a bulky collection and it is deemed to be in excess of a truckload, you will be assessed a fee that must be paid before service is rendered. Please call FAY for details. No construction or building material will be collected No materials from contracted jobs or land clearing will be collected. OTHER ITEM NOT COLLECTED: Any material resulting from work performed by a contractor All automotive parts Sheetrock Large air conditioning or heating units (window units are allowed) Ceramic tile Dirt Sheet metal materials Fence posts with concrete attached Sheet glass, glass windows or glass doors Fuel tanks of any type Rocks Roofing shingles Sand Tree stumps Chemicals and paints.

17 Before putting bulky items at the curb, call and schedule for a pickup to avoid having these items sit in front of your home for an extended period of time. 18 ElrllRONbElTAl SERVICES SERVICES PODE ENFORCEMENT Environmental Services collection in the City of Fayetteville is governed by Section (a). These rules and guidelines have been designed to protect the appearance of neighborhoods and keep the streets free from obstacles for drivers' and pedestrians' safety.
