2 Curbside waste collection Don't miss your collection day Visit guelph.ca/waste to find out your collection day and week, and to sign up for weekly reminders by , text or phone. No internet access? Call for help. Once you know your collection week, refer to the Week A or Week B collection calendar in this guide. Collection Time All carts must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on your collection day. Cart set out Blue (recyclables) Collected biweekly Grey (garbage) Collected biweekly» The blue and grey carts are collected every other week one week, you ll put the green and blue carts at the curb; the next week, the green and grey carts. Green (organics) Collected weekly» The green cart is collected at the curb every week. Why does it matter? Your collection can occur any time after 6:30 a.m. and may vary from week to week. 6:30 a.m. All carts must be removed from the curb by 7 p.m. on your collection day. Do not use bags. Contents must be loose. Why does it matter? If the contents are in bags, the material cannot be recycled. Use clear bags only. Do not double bag or place filled bags inside another bag. Contents can also be loose. Why does it matter? Although the material ends up in landfill, we regularly audit the carts to check for non-compliant and hazardous items. Clear bags allow us to see what s inside. Use certified compostable bags or paper bags. Contents can also be loose. Why does it matter? Only these types of bags break down into compost at Guelph s Organic Waste Processing Facility.
3 Taking out your waste Waste not picked up?» Ensure carts are properly sorted and you re using the right bags.» Carts must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m.» Ensure carts are not too full, so the lids can fully close.» Do not stuff items inside. Overstuffed carts may not empty completely. Cart placement at the curb» Bags or items beside or on top of your carts will not be collected.» During the winter, place carts on a shovelled area of the snowbank or in the mouth of your driveway.» Flatten and place all cardboard inside the blue cart. Not collected in your carts Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Never place HHW in your carts. Drop it off, free of charge, at the HHW Depot at the Waste Resource Innovation Centre (WRIC) Gate 3. For residential use only. Items include:» medical needles and syringes» propane cylinders» fluorescent bulbs and tubes» aerosol cans (empty or full)» batteries» paint» medication» cleaners and chemicals» motor oil and gasoline Limited daily drop-off quantities apply. Large items Bring large items such as furniture and appliances to the WRIC for disposal or use the Bulky Item Collection Program or participate in a Goods Exchange weekend. 1. Park Place your carts about 30 cm (1 foot) from the curb for collection. You can also place individual carts on opposite sides of your driveway. 2. Point Point the arrow on the lid toward the street. Construction and demolition waste Bring construction and demolition waste to the WRIC for disposal. Fees may apply. Examples include:» carpet and under pad» concrete/rubble» drywall and plaster» shingles» insulation» scrap metal» wood One metre apart 3. Space Allow 1 metre clearance on all sides of each cart and 5 metres clearance above the cart away from obstacles such as trees, parked cars, power poles, awnings, utility boxes and fences. 4. Unlatch Unlatch the green cart lid. Do not place carts on sidewalks or walkways. Keep sidewalks accessible. Other items not collected in your carts Refer to the Waste Management By-law for a complete list. Examples include:» tires» automotive part(s): more than 5 kg or 11 lbs» rock, stones or gravel» tree branches: more than 5 cm or 2 in. in diameter» infectious medical waste» flesh or tissue from any animal» animal carcass, with the exception of food waste For more information about accepted items and fees, and to use the Waste Wizard tool, visit guelph.ca/waste.
4 Be a good sort Did you know the City conducts random audits of waste carts? If your waste isn t sorted properly, it may not be collected. Use the Waste Wizard tool at guelph.ca/waste to find out what goes where. Grey (garbage) Use clear bags only. Do not double bag or place filled bags inside another bag. Contents can also be loose. Clothes hangers (metal/plastic) Coffee cups/pods Diapers and hygiene products Dryer lint Non-fluorescent light bulbs Plastic bags (empty) Plastic food wrapping Chip bags Candy wrappers Saran Wrap Waxed Cups String, rope, wire and cords Styrofoam Non-infectious medical tubes and bags (in a separate clear plastic bag) Sharp objects such as broken glass, nonfluorescent bulbs, razors, blades and knives, should be placed in a small cardboard box, taped securely, and labelled SHARP OBJECTS. Medical needles and lancets must be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot. Green (organics) Use certified compostable bags or paper bags. Contents can also be loose. All plastics and elastics must be removed. Blue (recyclables) Do not use bags. Contents must be loose. All containers must be empty. Dairy products Food scraps Coffee filters/grounds Eggshells Oils (solidified) Spices Tea bags Fruits and vegetables Grain products House plants and flowers Leaf and yard waste Meat and fish Bones and skin Nuts, legumes and seeds Pet waste Pet feces and kitty litter can be placed in the green or grey cart Other Paper towels/tissues Paper soiled with food Sawdust (no wood pieces or pressure treated wood) Glass bottles and jars Metal» Cans» Aluminum foil and plates Milk and juice cartons Paper» All types (i.e. white, coloured, glossy and matte)» Shredded paper (in a separate clear plastic bag)» Books (spines and hard cover removed)» Cardboard and pizza boxes» Toilet paper/paper towel rolls Plastic» Bottles, containers, tubs and lids (all numbers)» Plant pots, trays and flats Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Keep Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) out of your carts. Drop it off free of charge at the HHW Depot. Items include: medical needles and syringes, propane cylinders, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, aerosol cans, batteries, paint, medication, cleaners and chemicals, and motor oil and gasoline. Limited daily drop-off quantities apply.

7 Special programs and services Several of these programs and services are available at the Waste Resource Innovation Centre (WRIC). See back of Guide for site location and hours of operation. Yard Waste You have several options for yard waste disposal:» Curbside collection (visit guelph.ca/waste for collection dates and details)» Drop it off at the WRIC» Top up your green cart with yard waste» Try backyard composting or leave grass clippings and mulched leaves on the lawn Free Recycling Programs Drop off the following items free of charge at the WRIC:» Electronic waste (e.g. TVs, computers, cell phones)» Cloth and fabric items (e.g. clothes, shoes, purses, towels)» Blue cart recyclables» Cardboard» Prescription eyeglasses» Scrap metal» Electrical cords and decorative lights Composters Backyard composters can be purchased from the WRIC Administration Office. NEW Confidential paper shredding Bring confidential papers to the WRIC for free shredding and recycling. For residential purposes only. Cart Exchanges Schedule a curbside cart exchange by calling There is a $35 exchange fee per cart to cover the cost of delivery and cleaning. Large Items Furniture, appliances and other large items can be brought to the WRIC or picked up at the curb; fees apply. Call to schedule a curbside pick-up. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) HHW can be dropped off free of charge at the HHW Depot at the WRIC. Items include:» medical needles and syringes» propane cylinders» fluorescent bulbs and tubes» aerosol cans (empty or full) Limited daily drop-off quantities apply.» batteries» paint» medication» cleaners and chemicals» motor oil and gasoline Paint+ Reuse Program This seasonal program (April 17 October 20, 2018) allows you to pick up used paint, stains, motor oil, antifreeze and cleaning products, free of charge, from the HHW Depot at the WRIC, Gate 3. Inventory varies. ReCycle Bike Reuse Program This year-round program allows you to donate and pick up previously-owned bicycles free of charge. Pick-up limit of two bicycles per resident per year. Inventory varies. Guelph Waste app Get personalized waste information, collection day reminders and sorting tips with the free Guelph Waste app. Sign up at guelph.ca/waste or download the mobile app today. Goods Exchange Twice a year (May and August 31 September 3, 2018) these Goods Exchange weekends allow you to exchange reusable household items with the Guelph community. Just leave it at the curb and label the item(s) as FREE. Food Waste About 40 per cent of the food we throw out is still good to eat. Did you know you can eat foods after the best-before date has passed? The food is still safe to eat but may have lost only a fraction of its freshness or flavour. 8 Waste Resource Innovation Centre The Waste Resource Innovation Centre (WRIC) is Guelph s one-stop solution for dropping off your recyclable and non-recyclable materials, yard waste and household hazardous waste. Location 110 Dunlop Drive, Guelph Hours of operation Public Drop-off (Gate 1) Monday Friday, 7 a.m. 6 p.m. Saturday, 8:30 a.m. 3:45 p.m. Closed Sunday and holidays Avoid peak times. Saturdays and Mondays are the busiest days; 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. are busy during weekdays. Administration office Gate 2 is for commercial traffic only. To access the Administration Office, watch for the sign and use the entrance after Gate 1.
