1 ANTIQUE ENGINE & TRACTOR ASSOCIATION, INC. JUNE 2015 NEWSLETTER From the President This past month a lot of decisions were required to be made in a very short amount of time. The AETA was presented with the opportunity to obtain a railroad for the show grounds. The decision was made and the details can be found later in this newsletter. As the summer show and auction comes closer please be thinking about any items that you know of that you may want to donate or consign to the auction. For this to work we need to know what you have to place in the auction VERY SOON. The items do not have to be on site, but we need to know about them. It is time for summer work days to begin, please be sure to come to the show grounds to help. The dates are June 13th, 27 th, July 11 th and 18 th if needed. We will have a general meeting on July 11 th. We will be working a variety of projects from fences to cleaning up the grounds to painting. Times will be from 8:00 am to noon on each day. If the forecast is for excessive heat we will not be working. You can always call and ask. Attention Massey collectors, 2016 is your year to be the feature tractor. We need you to be at the show this year. We also need feature coordinators for next year. Please contact a board member if you are interested or know someone who may want to help with this position. On a planning note, if you have interest in becoming a board member it is not too soon to speak up and toss your name in the hat. If you have ideas for the winter breakfast meetings please let me know. I have a couple on the list that we did not get in this past winter, but not enough to fill all the time slots. 3 MISSISSIPPI VALLEY FAIR Looking for another venue to share your toys? Parade your toys? Meet new people? Enjoy a relaxing time? Have we got a deal for you! The Great Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, Iowa is August 4 9 this year and we re looking for some old iron. Any tractor or implement before 1970, garden tractors/lawn mowers before 1980 or other antique farm related is welcome. BUT... you will have to contact Dick Bockwoldt at before May 30th to be put on the mailing list. You will then receive a letter in June explaining all the particulars. Where to bring them; when you can bring them; parade details, etc. The area we have for display is limited so it s imperative that you contact Dick and get on the mailing list. CONTACT: Dick Bockwoldt at These are photos of a McCormick Deering seeder which I purchased at the Hazelhurst auction. The tractor is a 1934 F-12. I hope to bring the outfit to the summer show in July. McCracken (815) East Moline Parade Opportunities Pickers Paradise (Street Sale) will be held Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. in downtown East Moline in the 600 block of 15th Avenue. There will be a kids tractor pull, music, and more. We would love to have as many members as possible bring their tractors. For more information or to confirm, please call Tony at (309) Also, on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, we will be having our Lighted Christmas Parade. Lineup is at 5 pm with the parade at 6 pm. We would love for your members to attend that too. All you need to do is put lights on your tractor. RAILROAD COMES HOME TO AETA An advertisement for a railroad looking for a new home was shared by Russ Bos, and it found its way to the AETA Long Term Planning Committee.

These are actual working engines that came out of a copper mine in New Jersey. The train runs on a 30" gauge track.

4 RAILROAD COMES HOME TO AETA An advertisement for a railroad looking for a new home was shared by Russ Bos, and it found its way to the AETA Long Term Planning Committee. A committee to always be aware of opportunity, some phone calls were made. The railroad has a Porter steam locomotive and two 8 ton Brookville diesels with Cat D-320 engines. These are actual working engines that came out of a copper mine in New Jersey. The train runs on a 30" gauge track. It has 2 riding cars, over 2500 feet of track, extra cars, switches, tools and parts. The AETA Board of Directors voted for the Long Term Planning Committee to follow up on this offer and check the condition of the equipment. This committee's members are: Bill Cole, Larry Colo, Dusty Olson, and Lora Lea Miller. The committee's findings were presented and the Board voted to negotiate for the purchase of the total railroad offering. The purchase agreement has been signed. The ANTIQUE ENGINE AND TRACTOR ASSOCIATION will be its home! You can almost hear that whistle!!! If you would like to see the pictures or discuss the railroad, please contact your board members or the committee. If you have some input on the location of the train at the showgrounds, please contact Curt. We want to hear from you, as we know that this will impact various areas of the site. We want to be sure not to adversely effect any area more than necessary. If we don't receive input, we can not plan to cause minimal impact. The placement of the track will be final.

5 The Rumely Super-Powered Tractors By Larry Gay By 1928, the Rumely OilPull tractors were becoming outdated as farmers were buying the newer design of the McCormick-Deering and 15-30, the John Deere D, and the row-crop Farmall. The Advance-Rumely Company reacted by introducing an improved series of their standard-tread tractors. Known as the Super-Powered Oil- Pulls, they were easily identified by the small expansion tank located near the top of the front side of the cooling tower. The primary difference between the Super-Powered models and the previous Lightweight OilPulls was a faster engine speed to provide more power. The four new models continued with the horizontal 2-cylinder engine, the Secor -Higgins carburetor for kerosene, the cooling tower at the front of the machine, and the 3-speed transmission. The Model W OilPull with a horsepower rating replaced the Model L OilPull with a rating. The increased power was obtained by increasing the engine speed from 755 rpm to 850 rpm as the bore and stroke remained at 5.81 x 7.0 inches. However, Rumely still classified the W as a 3-plow tractor and said it could power a 28-inch thresher. The rear wheels could be equipped with spade lugs or angled cleats. The Model W was produced from 1928 to 1930 and was the most popular of the four new models. The second size of the new Super-Powered OilPulls was the Model X with a power rating. It replaced the M OilPull. The engine s bore and stroke remained at 6.81 x 8.25 inches, but the speed increased from 640 to 725 rpm. The Model X was rated as a 4-plow tractor and could handle a 32-inch thresher. The rear wheels again offered a choice of spade lugs or angled cleats. The X OilPull was built from 1928 to 1930 and some of the Model M tractors were converted into Model X tractors. The Model Y OilPull was the third size of the new Super-Powered models. It was advertised as a 5-6 plow tractor which could handle a 36-inch thresher. The Model Y was rated at horsepower by increasing its engine speed to 635 rpm from 540 rpm in the R. The engine bore and stroke in both models was 7.81 x 9.5 inches. The Y was produced in only 1929 and some of the Model R tractors were converted into Model Y tractors. The Z OilPull replaced the S by using the 40 drawbar horsepower produced by the Model S at its Nebraska test for a new power rating. The engine speed remained at 470 rpm as did the 9.0- x 11.0-inch bore and stroke. Advance-Rumely said the Z was an 8-10 plow tractor and could power the largest threshers. It was built only in 1929 and some of the unsold Model S tractors were converted into Model Z tractors and later converted back into Model S tractors. PTOs started becoming popular during the 1920s and the Advance-Rumely Company developed one for the two smallest models of the Lightweight and Super-Powered OilPulls. A cross shaft was positioned under the center of the tractor. On the right end of the cross shaft was a pulley which was driven by a flat belt from the tractor s belt pulley. On the left end of the cross shaft was a bevel gear box with a shaft extending toward the rear of the tractor. This shaft passed under the left rear axle and ended near the left fender where it was connected to the implement s drive shaft. The Advance-Rumely Company added combines to its product line starting in 1925 and these became popular products. The No. 1 was available in Prairie and Hillside versions and was usually equipped with a 16-foot header. The No. 2 model was added in 1926 and was built only as a Prairie version with 12- or 16-foot headers. The No. 3 with a 10-foot header was added as a Prairie version in 1927 and as a Hillside version in Added in 1928, the No. 4 was the smallest with a 7-foot header and a PTO drive. The other three models were powered by an engine mounted on the combine.
