6 Ford Tractors By Larry Gay In January 1953, the Ford NAA tractor was introduced as the replacement for the Ford 8N and was built for two years. Since 1953 was the 50-year anniversary of the Ford Motor Company, the tractors built in 1953 used the round emblem on the front of the hood to iden fy them as the Golden Jubilee Model. The NAA tractors built in 1954 were iden cal, except for the wording on the round emblem. The 2-plow NAA model had a four-inch longer wheelbase than the 8N and the displacement of the gasoline engine was increased to 134 cubic inches, an 11-percent increase over the 120 cubic inches in the 8N. The other major change was in the hydraulic system as a result of the se lement of the Ferguson lawsuit. It was now a live system with the pump driven by the engine plus some other changes. The NAA model con nued the color scheme of the 8N with a red body and gray hood, fenders, and wheels. For the 1955 model year, Ford started building two models of u lity tractors in the U.S. for the first me. The 2-plow 600 series con- nued with the NAA s 134-cubic-inch gasoline engine, but weighed about 300 pounds more. The 800 series was rated as a 3-plow tractor with a 172-cubic-inch gasoline engine. A new op onal live PTO was controlled by the clutch pedal with the halfway posi on stopping only the travel and the fully down posi on stopping both the travel and the PTO. Both the 600 and 800 series used a combina on of model numbers to iden fy the op ons the tractor was equipped with such as a four or five speed transmission and standard or live PTO. In the spring of 1955, Ford introduced the 700 and 900 series of tricycle tractors with two closely spaced front wheels and 28 inches of clearance under the rear axle. The 700 series was the tricycle version of the 600 series and the 900 series corresponded to the 800 series. Now Ford had tractors for the farmer who preferred a mid-mounted cul vator or a mounted corn picker. Increased power, revised styling, and new names were the features of the new for 1958 models. The 600 and 700 series became the 601 and 701 Workmaster series with a red hood, and gray grill, fenders, and wheels. The 801 and 901 series tractors were named the Powermaster series and had red bars over the gray grill plus a wide red stripe on the top of the gray hood. The increased power was obtained by increasing the compression ra os and the ra ngs of the two sizes became 2-3 plow and 3-4 plow tractors. Two sizes of four-cylinder diesel engines were introduced in 1958 and a 541 offset tractor for one-row cul va ng was added in In February 1959, Ford introduced the Select-O-Speed transmission for the 01 series tractors, the first full powershi transmission. It provided 10 forward speeds, two in reverse, and a park posi on. One lever provided on-the-go shi ing without the use of a clutch by using four planetary gearsets, three hydraulically operated brake bands, and three hydraulically operated clutch packs. The dealers used gold-painted tractors to demonstrate the features of this unique transmission, but the early units were plagued by many problems. Eventually the problems were solved and the Select-O-Speed became a successful transmission. Ford entered the big-size tractor market in March 1961 when the company introduced the 5-plow 6000 row-crop tractor with 66 PTO horsepower and the typical red and gray paint scheme. It featured a 6-cylinder diesel engine, the Select-O-Speed full powershi transmission, a closed-center hydraulic system with an accumulator, disc brakes, and power steering. A 6-cylinder gasoline engine was soon added. However, the early 6000 tractors experienced many problems. First there was a factory update kit for the engine, then one for the hydraulics, and then one for the final drive. However, the tractors were recalled before the third kit was shipped. The tractor s owner had his choice of having his tractor rebuilt or exchanging it for a new one with all the improvements. The returned tractors were rebuilt and sold as remanufactured tractors. All of the improved 6000 models had a slight reduc on in power and were painted blue with white hood, fenders, and wheels.
