1 ANTIQUE ENGINE & TRACTOR ASSOCIATION, INC. May 2013 NEWSLETTER From the President I am pleased to report that the summer kitchen donated by Phil Jordan has been moved to the show grounds this past weekend. I want to say a very special thanks to those individuals who took this project on and completed this special project. This is another fine example of cooperation and working together of a group of people. There are photos of the move later in the newsletter. It sounds like we have already christened the building as the Jordan Mercantile as the intention of the building is to have an old fashioned store where we can sell goods produced from the Fall Show. This opens up another opportunity we would like to have one or two individuals take on the store project; to dress up the interior, make a sign for outside, work on what to sell and coordinating running the store during show time. Think about it and let me know if you are interested. My second appreciation goes to Dick Black for conducting the Swap Meet this past weekend. By all accounts it turned out to be an excellent event and despite the weather we had an excellent turn out of vendors and buyers. We are already talking about potentially asking these folks back to the Summer Show. In regards to the Summer Show we are having the auction on Sunday again and I would ask that you start looking for items that you need to part with and consign. Vern Mariman will be doing the auction again and we would like to know what some of the consignments are so we can get the advertising put together. Please also note that there is a new lean-to on the north side of the cattle barn and the corn crib has been cleaned up and repaired. Fantastic work by Lenzy, Vince, Ed Brooks and the team. What an improvement they have made. I know there were many other helpers thank-you for your help with this. And speaking of clean-up we are going to clean up the mess on the west side of the grounds between the cattle barn and the camping area. There is tons of old lumber, metal, and clutter; this mess needs cleaned up preferably by the summer show. If you have something you especially have claim to please let Curt or myself know and we will save it out. Reminiscing by Larry Goodwin & John Boyens; Co- Historians Mark As you can tell from the pictures in the newsletter on the next page, AETA has received another great donation. The Jordan Mercantile building has been received from Phil & Karen Jordan. It has quite a history to it. The Geneseo Public Library kindly researched and provided several articles and pictures relating to the old Ebenezer Campground located 6 miles North of Geneseo. It was located in what was called Painter s Grove. A short excerpt from one of the articles states A new and commodious kitchen is being built which will add materially to the facilities for feeding the hungry multitude. Their regular prices will be 25 cents. This article was written Aug. 19, It served the campground for a number of years. Several years later it was moved to what many remember as the Sieben Farm. Mrs. Sammons used it for her catering business. Recently Phil Jordan, who now owns the farmstead, offered it to AETA because of its history. Several of our members got it loose from the foundation and with the use of Phil s loader tractors, planter trailer, and blocks, it was reinforced, raised up, and secured on the trailer for the trip to the show grounds. The plan is to place it near the Blacksmith s shop and have it used as a country store. A big Thank you to Phil and Karen Jordan and all who helped with the project.
2 Thanks Phil and Karen Jordan for your generous gift! The birth of the Jordan Mercantile
3 International Harvester By Larry Gay International Harvester introduced a new line of tractors with five models and new styling for the 1955 model year. The Farmall Cub retained its name and offset design, but featured a new single-socket Fast Hitch for attaching a wide variety of implements. A new addition to the line was the International Cub Lo-Boy with the offset configuration, but a lower silhouette. The Farmall 100 replaced the Super A with increased power, but remained in the 1-2 plow class. Like the Cub, the 100 featured the offset design for excellent visibility while cultivating and the single-socket Fast Hitch. The new replacement for the Super C was the 2-plow Farmall 200 which retained the two-socket Fast Hitch for attaching implements. The major changes took place with the Farmall 300 and 400 models. The 300 replaced the Super H and stepped up to the 3-plow class. The Farmall 400 replaced the Super M-TA and was rated as a 4-plow tractor with a choice of gasoline, LP-gas, or diesel engines. For the 300 and 400, the 10-speed Torque-Amplifer transmission was standard and an independent PTO and a two-socket Fast Hitch were optional. The International 300 Utility tractor was a low-profile version of the Farmall 300 with a straddle-type operator s station. The International W-400 was a standard-tread version of the Farmall 400. A year later, the 5-plow, standard-tread International 600, powered by a 4-cylinder gasoline or diesel engine, was introduced. A unique attachment for the 400 and W-400 was the Electrall, a belt-driven generator which attached to the side of the tractor. It provided 115-volt, 220-volt, and 220-volt, 3-phase service. A new two-tone red and white paint scheme and a slight increase in power defined International Harvester s 1957 model year family of tractors. The 1-plow, offset Farmall Cub had a slight increase in engine displacement. The Farmall 130 replaced the 100, but retained the offset design and the 1-2 plow rating. The 2-plow Farmall 230 had a faster engine speed than the replaced 200. The Farmall 350 and Farmall 450 replaced the 300 and 400, respectively, each with a small increase in the engine bore. The 350 now offered a choice of gasoline, LP-gas, or diesel engines. The Fast Hitch for the 230, 350, and 450 included Traction Control which transferred weight to increase traction as the draft load increased. The International versions included the Cub Lo-Boy, 130, 350, W-450, and the 5-6 plow, standardtread 650. The International 330 was a 2-3 plow utility tractor built in 1957 and For the 1959 model year, International Harvester decided extra power required extra cylinders and introduced the Farmall 560 and 460 tractors with 6-cylinder gasoline, LP-gas, and new direct-start diesel engines. The 560 was rated as a 5-plow tractor with 60 belt horsepower and the 460 was advertised as a 4-plow tractor with 50 belt horsepower. The 3-plow Farmall 340 and the 2-3 plow 240 were new row-crop tractors with a straddle-type operator s station and 4- cylinder, spark-ignition engines. The Farmall 140 and Farmall Cub continued with the offset configuration. The 6-plow International 660 was a large standard-tread tractor with 75-belt horsepower developed by 6-cylinder gasoline, LP-gas, or diesel engines. The International 560 was a standard-tread version of the Farmall 560 and the International 460, 340, 240, and Cub Lo-Boy were utility configurations of the corresponding Farmall models. Unfortunately, the power train of the 560 and 460 experienced durability problems during 1959 with the increased power of the 6-cylinder engines. In April 1960, Harvester issued Sales Bulletin No. 51 which listed more than 130 improvements which had been made to the 460, 560, and 660 models. New for 1962 were the Farmall and International 404 and 504 along with the International 606 and the giant 4-wheel-drive International 4300 with 180 drawbar horsepower.
