Autonomous / Unmanned Surface Vehicles And The Increased Efficiencies They Offer James Hailstones, ASV, Ltd.
Introduction Company ~70 employees worldwide. ASV established in ASV operations in USA opened May Naval Architecture and Boat Building foundation. Provide rugged, reliable and effective unmanned and autonomous marine systems. Delivered over 70 systems to date. Headquarters and Operations: Portchester, UK Operational base in Broussard, LA, USA Sales office in Houston, TX, USA 2
Autonomous / Unmanned Surface Vehicle (ASV) - Recap Current Heavy Duty Class of Vehicles C-Worker 6 C-Worker 7 C-Worker 4 C-Worker 5 3 Aluminium Hull Self Righting Diesel Electric Power Plants Long Endurance Large Payload Capacity Radio + Satellite Communications/Control

Efficiencies More data per unit cost Better use of high value assets Removal of high cost resources Lower project man hours Reduced administration / support Infrastructure. Reduced resource consumption i.e. Fuel. 10
More Data per Unit Cost Force Multiplier Force Multiplier not a new concept. ASV utilisation increases efficiencies (time and cost) of the force multiplier model. Force Multiplier
More Data per Unit Cost Force Multiplier 1 x Survey Vessel General Specifications Reson Seabat 7125 MBES 200kHz Equidistant 50m Water Depth 30km x 30km survey Vessel speed 5knts (9km p/h) Line turns not taken into account Water column sound velocity profiles not taken into account. 9km p/h (just short of 5knts) hrs data acquisition per day = 16.5 days 1 x Survey Vessel + 2 x Force Multiplier ASV s i.e. The three platforms running concurrently: Attained swath for each platform is the same (254m) Speed of each platform is the same (9km p/h, just short of 5knts) Reduce the acquisition hours for each platform to 22hrs per day (for C-Worker maintenance if needed, refuelling, data download etc.) hrs data acquisition per = 18 days 18 days split between the 3 platforms = 6 days each Total Survey time = 6 days 12
More Data per Unit Cost Force Multiplier Summary One survey vessel means area is completed in 16.5 days One survey vessel and two force multipliers means area is completed in 6 days. Utilising historical project costs; a vessel with equipment, personnel and consumables to populate one vessel provides a cost per day of: 15,870 Revising the same costs with the correct number of personnel, equipment and consumables for one vessel and two force multiplier ASV s provides an increased cost per day of: 31,430 One vessel for 16.5 days = 261,855 One vessel + two force multipliers for 6 days = 188, A reduction of 28% in cost
Better Use Of High Value Assets LBL Array Calibration 14
Better Use Of High Value Assets Dalmation Field, GoM. Subsea 7 were contracted to install a 21km flexible flowline in approximately 1,900m water depth C-Worker 6 on-board Grant Candies. Vehicle equipped with a Sonardyne Lodestar 6G system Grant Candies Image courtesy of Subsea7 15
Better Use Of High Value Assets Three LBL arrays were installed. One at both ends of the flowline and one along a section of the route corridor. 16
Better Use Of High Value Assets The three arrays comprised a total: 38 transponders 10 box-in s. 3 Array Calibrations/Adjustments The ASV was programmed to autonomously transit a circle around each transponder equating to 15% of the water depth; collecting ranges and posteriorly a final position was calculated with the Fusion Software Box-In tool. The resulting vessel track was almost a perfect circle around each transponder. 17
Better Use Of High Value Assets ASV primarily mobilised to perform Box-In tasks only. Vessel Survey team used ASV to perform initial Baseline data collection as a means to save more time and subsequently used ASV for to complete all array calibration and adjustment processes. Vessel and ROV released from LBL commissioning duties to continue with other Project tasks. Array Name No of Transponders No of Box-in Box-in Time (hrs) Calibration Time (hrs) Total Time (hrs) Flowline In-Line Umbilical Total Time days of vessel time saved
