2 Dear colleague, With ever more stringent emission standards, exhaust aftertreatment is becoming an integral part of passenger vehicles. Furthermore, the international differences in law pose an additional challenge for the automotive industry. Besides the advances in diesel and gasoline engine performance, the exhaust system has become a focal point of automotive development. In the sight of keeping costs down while including an effective, robust and cost-efficient aftertreatment solution, customised product development, improved filter technologies and an optimised interplay between engine and aftertreatment system are seen as key factors in overcoming the challenges. IQPC is providing a forum to the international automotive industry to discuss the international emission legislation and evaluate its impacts on the automotive industry. Key speakers will share their knowledge on advanced aftertreatment systems and present their experiences in customised product development. This Congress will promote far-reaching debate, generate close dialogue, and encourage the exchange of views and knowledge in an intimate and informal atmosphere. Be part of IQPC s International Congress on Emission Control Concepts Understanding international emission legislation for passenger cars Exploring advanced integrated aftertreatment systems Reducing exhaust emissions in diesel and gasoline engines Take this opportunity to listen to international case studies and discuss the technological and constructive challenges and innovations with experts from Saab Powertrain, Honda R&D Europe, Bosch Engineering, Magna Steyr and many more. 5 interactive WORKSHOP DAY I Wednesday, 1st December 2010 Workshop A 10:00 13:00 Turbocharging: Its role in controlling emissions The turbocharger today is a highly-developed product that has become almost indispensable for diesel engines, and is set to become widely used in gasoline engines. Turbocharging was originally used principally as a means to increase the power density of engines, but today its role in limiting emissions is of equal or greater importance. The challenges for the turbocharger designer today are to improve overall efficiency, boost pressure, and operating range, while keeping down manufacturing costs and achieving high reliability. Successful designs are those which achieve the right compromise between these conflicting requirements. Join this workshop to discuss the following topics: Turbocharging and exhaust emissions: How pollutants form and how turbocharging can help to limit them Turbocharging and EGR: The need to turbocharge, and the implications of EGR for the turbocharger Optimizing the turbocharger: Exhaust gas energy availability and strategies to optimize exhaust energy utilization Compressor and turbine performance characteristics Matching the turbocharger to the engine Benefits and problems Overcoming the limitations of simple turbocharging systems: Variable geometry, series turbocharging, electric assist, etc. Turbocharged engine simulations Current status and future developments Nick Baines, Distinguished Corporate Fellow, Concepts NREC, UK Workshop B 10:00 13:00 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) versus SCR systems to reduce NOx emissions Both, EGR and SCR technologies are proven approaches to emissions reduction, and most manufacturers in have already done a lot of the work to implement one solution or the other to meet 2010 requirements. However, the two applications achieve a reduction in NO x emissions in two fundamentally different ways. This workshop will explain and discuss the benefits and challenges that those two mechanisms offer in the light of achieving most stringent NO x legislation. This workshop will cover: Principle functionality of SCR and EGR The compliance question Trade-offs and benefits from SCR and EGR in reducing NO x emissions What's next Outlook to potential future technologies for SCR reduction or potential avoidance Dr. Steve Ciatti, Principal Mechanical Engineer, Center for Transportation Research, Argonne National Laboratory, US Workshop C 14:00 17:00 Technologies for measuring near zero emissions Emission limits are decreasing and reach a limit of near zero. Measuring small concentrations of pollutions like NO x and PM with the necessary accuracy is getting more and more complicated. This is not only of concern in regards to the measuring devices used at test benches, but OBD also forces judging the emission level on board during the lifetime of a vehicle. During the workshop we will discuss the following topics: Sensor technologies for on board usage Measuring devices for test benches Differences measuring on board and in the lab Robustness evaluation techniques Calibration issues Thomas Czarnecki, Senior Manager Diagnostics, Bosch Engineering GmbH Workshop D 14:00 17:00 SCR in passenger cars The application of SCR is currently viewed as a most efficient technology to meet both the upcoming Euro 6 emissions standards and CO 2 emissions reduction regulations in passenger cars. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss strategies, current experience from existing applications and point-out the major technological challenges for a cost-effective application of SCR technology in passenger cars. The participants will have the possibility to share views on the following topics: Cold-start and integration with DPF systems Flow uniformity, importance of gas mixing Catalyst durability Packaging problems, weight On-Board Diagnostics Maintenance issues And new concepts Thierry Seguelong, Diesel Project Director, Rhodia Electronics and Catalysis, France
