Turbocharging was originally used principally as a means to increase the power density of engines, but today its role in limiting emissions is of equal or greater importance. The challenges for the turbocharger designer today are to improve overall efficiency, boost pressure, and operating range, while keeping down manufacturing costs and achieving high reliability. Successful designs are those which achieve the right compromise between these conflicting requirements.
