2 Meeting climate requirements with natural gas and bio-gas The break through of 2 nd generation biofuels Powertrain concepts for optimized engine performance Dear Colleague, the spread of biofuels is a hot topic at the moment: Oil reserves are depleting whilst CO2 emissions need to be decreased urgently to support climate protection. With the implementation of biofuels the automotive industry is assuring its sustainability and fuel manufacturers are discovering new areas of business. A number of challenges appear to threat these promising developments: Increasing crop prices, low oil prices and hesitance from governments to request higher biofuel blends. Only with the implementation of 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels can these challenges be overcome. Auto industry, fuel manufacturers and established research organisations are approaching the subject from different angles. That is why you can t afford to miss IQPC s international conference: Automotive Biofuels Meeting climate requirements with natural gas and bio-gas The breakthrough of 2nd generation biofuels Powertrain concepts for optimized engine performance Bio-methanol: Infrastructure for large scale production 3rd generation biofuels: Low-cost photobioreactor technology Low pressure gas: Best practice diesel engines in commercial vehicles High-level speakers from companies such as Tata, Volkswagen, BioMCN, GDF SUEZ, Delphi, Scania, Total and many more will report about first-hand experiences and latest developments. 3 INTERACTIVe Workshop DAY Monday, 6 th July 2009 Workshop A 10:00-13:00 Christian Bach, Director, Head Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory, EMPA Materials Science and Technology, Switzerland Today natural gas - tomorrow a carrier for gaseous low carbon fuels Due to the low carbon content and the good knock resistance, natural gas has a significant CO2 reduction potential as fuel for internal combustion engines. At the same time, the cold start emissions as well as the ozone reactive or toxic exhaust gas components can be very low. This is an important benefit for meeting future emission legislations with today s technology. In future, mixtures of natural gas, pre-processed biogas and fossil energy free produced hydrogen could be a vision of a new green fuel. Topics to be discussed are: Gaseous fuels strategy: Potentials and challenges Methane gas engine and powertrain technology - from bifueled vehicles to dedicated hybrids? Stakeholder / market situation - common view existing? Basic conditions for e.g. fuel and vehicle taxation Dealer: How attractive is the front end? Workshop B 10:00-13:00 Karin Arnold, Research Group I Sustainable Energy and Mobility Structures, Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy GmbH, Germany Workshop C 14:00-17:00 Norbert Spreize, Managing Director, LuPower Energie-Projekt GmbH & Co KG, Austria Workshop D 14:00-17:00 For further information please visit our website: biofuels/mm Biofuels for transport: Implementing the requirements of the European Union In December 2008, the Renewable Energy Directive was adopted, setting a binding target of 10 % renewable transport until 2020 to be reached in all European member states. It can be assumed, that a large amount of that will have to be met by biofuels of the 1 st generation. Still, a number of questions remain to be discussed amongst producers and users of biofuels, amongst polticians and investors. The following technical and political topics will be discussed in the workshop: Which biofuels are at hand to meet the quota within the next few years? What technological progress will be made in good time? What is necessary to establish the European requirements in national or regional frameworks? Is it feasible for the industry to act at all before reviews have taken place? Certification: What can be expected from sustainability schemes? Fuel Quality Directive: Additional requirements to climate impacts from a well-to-wheel perspective what does that mean for the fuel and biofuel industry? Best practice retrofit installation Converting vehicles to operate on natural gas got a popular way to try out alternatives to combustion engines. To realise a conversion many aspects has to be checked: Conversion system availability, the total costs as well as tax issues. The workshop gives an overview over the state of the art of retrofit installation for commercial vehicles and will focus on following facets: System modifications Components Fuel storage systems Electronic safety devices Quality assurance during serial conversions Commercialisation of retrofit products A hard-pushed market: Strategic assessment of the market for future biofuels Sustainability still is a key word in the automotive industry. Following successful implementation, biofuels seem to have fallen behind. Because of the debate surrounding the increasing cost of crops and the alienation of national Governments planned blends, the biofuels market is being dramatically neglected. The workshop shows global trends and forecasts for different engines and alternative fuels. Market analysis for 2 nd generation biofuels will be presented and discussed. Negative impact on biofuels market development through legislation changes Decreasing oil prices the drop out of an important driver Increasing food prices the end for biofuel extension? Regional growth perspectives and international biofuel standardisation Europe: Focus on biodiesel USA: Increasing demand on bioethanol Asia: Growing interest in biodiesel
