DRIVING CHANGE green solutions for fleet managers Tools Accelerating for Green Biomass Fleet in Commercial Management Fleets Biomass North October
This Presentation This presentation describes how Fleet Challenge and our partner organizations help stimulate the transition to new green fleet practices In similar ways, transportation fuels from biomass, including renewable natural gas, green diesel and ethanol can be accelerated to help commercial fleets do their part in achieving Canada s carbon reduction commitments
A Brief History of Fleet Challenge Since 2005 the Fleet Challenge mission has been the reduction of carbon emissions from commercial fleets We facilitate adoption of proven green technologies and best practices Our programs are designed to remove barriers and recognize achievement, thereby increasing acceptance and uptake of green methods by risk-averse fleet managers A self-supporting not-for-profit program No commercial affiliations or influences
About Fleet Challenge What We Do Work one-to-one with fleet managers to develop viable green fleet plans Workshops & seminars Trade exhibits Public presentations Awards & recognition Publications R&D & pilot projects
The Green Fleet Tools for Green Fleet Management Why? How?
Situation Transportation is responsible for ~ 24% of Canada s GHGs Almost 100% of municipalities surveyed by Fleet Challenge have Green Fleet plans to reduce their GHG s Multitudes of private sector CSR-focused green fleet examples: Canada Post, Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, Purolator, Ikea, GTAA, to name a few Canada a signatory of Paris Climate agreement, provincial ratification Despite enthusiasm, given currently available solutions, it will be challenging to achieve 80% GHG reduction by 2050
Fleet Challenge Past & Present Activities Tools for Green Fleet Management
E3 Fleet Program Fleet Challenge s foundation program Regarded as the transportation equivalent to LEED for buildings Determines fleet GHG baseline and helps fleets develop viable carbon reduction strategies Acknowledges commitment and rewards success with a national Green Rating and accreditation system Bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels
E3 Fleet Program 140 Members Strong!
~140 members including: City of Camrose Canadian Springs Water Co. Capital Regional District Emterra Regional Municipality of Halton City of Kitchener Town of Lakeshore Township of Langley London Hydro Inc. City of London City of Merritt City of Nanaimo Town of New Tecumseth E3 Fleet Program Sampling of Membership Niagara Region Paradise Islands Foods Inc. Regional Municipality of York City of Revelstoke City of Richmond District of Saanich County of Simcoe City of Spruce Grove The Corporation of the City of New Westminster Thompson Rivers University UBC Building Operations Vancouver Airport Authority (YVR) Corporation of the City of Victoria
Current E3 Green Rated Fleets Platinum University of British Columbia (Building Operations Department) Richmond, BC Gold County of Simcoe Township of Langley City of Surrey Hydro One Corporation of Delta City of Vancouver Silver City of Prince George City of Kitchener City of Guelph City of Hamilton (Public Works Division) Bronze Regional Municipality of Halton
HIRS Police TM Battery & EMS Solution Idling Reduction Project Police and EMS (PEMS) vehicles must idle up to 70% of the time some 7/24 Fuel burn rate: ~5 liters/hr. idling Fleet Challenge PEMS project developed HIRS technology chain Success! Idling reduction up to 47%, fuel consumption reduction up to 2.37 litres/hour, GHG reductions up to 21 tonnes CO 2 per yr./vehicle and ROI as low as 0.9 years
HIRS HIRS TM TM Battery Battery Solution
HIRSTM HIRS TM TM APU APU Solution Solution solution

Electric What we Vehicles do Project EVAn (Electric Vehicle Analysis) joint project by Fleet Challenge, Pollution Probe and CrossChasm Technologies EVAn compared battery-electric vehicles to traditional ICE (gaspowered) units in real-world City of Toronto fleet operations EVAn determined that EV operational cost savings offset price premiums to deliver ROI in just a few years - and EV s produce 21 times less CO 2
Electric Vehicles Other Activities Vancouver Hybrid Taxi Project: Fleet Challenge BC compared the use of hybrid vehicles to traditional gas-powered taxis Three-year hybrid-electric test in real-world use, documented substantially lower operating costs and reductions in air pollution Dispelled fears about batteries and hybrids 800k km s w/o problems
Electric Vehicles Other Activities FleetWise EV300 Project: On behalf of the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, Fleet Challenge helped achieve the goal of 300 hybrids in Toronto-based fleets Level III EVSE Project: Fleet Challenge recently developed a business model and assessed the viability for EV fast-charging stations at Hwy. 401 service centres
BioFleet Program - Biodiesel Fleet Challenge BioFleet Program: Goal was market development for biodiesel; sought to mitigate the chicken/egg impasse BioFleet informed fleet managers and organized biodiesel provincial procurement groups; then collectively negotiated best prices BioFleet assured potential biodiesel distributors of market demand and informed fleet managers Results: rapid growth of supply network and uptake by fleets; by 2013 big-blend (B5-B100) biodiesel used by almost all municipalities in/near urban centers, numerous corporate entities
Fuel Ethanol: Fleet Challenge continues to support higher blends of ethanol (E10 > E85) in fleets via recommendations and outreach 600,000 factory-built E85-capable flex-fuel vehicles now in Canada Cellulosic ethanol production opportunity Little (if any?) source of supply BioFleet Program Ethanol
Solutions - Compressed Natural Gas Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is recommended by Fleet Challenge team as a clean, efficient, safe, alternate transportation fuel Payback for technology cost premium in 3-10 years from substantially lower price of CNG over diesel Applications include refuse packer trucks as well as light-duty vehicles
Other Solutions EPA SmartWay Project: Fleet Challenge, on behalf of NRCan, surveyed Ontario trucking fleets; determined where new efficiencies might be found Microtransit Scoping Study: Fleet Challenge recently (2016) assessed the potential for microtransit to drive GHG reductions in Greater Toronto and Montréal
Other Solutions Technologies such as engine stop/start devices reduce fuel use and are mandated elsewhere Behaviour change e.g., usage-based insurance premiums in place in other jurisdictions and shown to be effective in GHG reduction Behaviour change e.g., Pickup & SUV sales ever-increasing - many drivers still feel its acceptable to drive gas guzzlers Ultimate fuel source may be hydrogen; vehicles are available (in limited supply), but public fuelling infrastructure non-existent -- significant penetration into fleet could take decades
New Solutions - Renewable Natural Gas Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) - methanol from municipal landfills a closed loop solution The Toronto Green Bin Program can produce enough bioenergy to annually fuel the vehicles in the waste collection fleet A Closed Loop Solution Source: Source: Closing the Loop - a primer for municipalities, food processors and fleets
For most municipalities Fleet is typically responsible for ~ 30% of GHG s Municipalities can play a unique role as a producer and consumer of RNG New Solutions - Renewable Natural Gas Source: Closing the Loop - a primer for municipalities, food processors and fleets
Conclusion GHG reduction options for transportation fleets are limited; more solutions are needed Biomass should be an integral part of Canada s carbon reduction plans Chicken/egg quandary persists with regard to new solutions, delaying wide-scale implementation Sustained efforts similar to the initiatives described herein will facilitate uptake by commercial fleets Commitment and intense effort by all stakeholders are essential for Canada to achieve its carbon reduction commitments
