2 The Center for Sustainable Tourism at East Carolina University is an interdisciplinary research center comprised of many diverse university academic and non-academic units. The goals of the Center are to promote and support the adoption of sustainable practices throughout the tourism industry whether business, government or individual traveler behaviors. This is done through graduate level education, academic research, and community and industry and outreach.

8 What are Offsets? A project or activity undertaken to reduce GHGs that another entity uses to mitigate emissions it can t avoid Undertaken off-site or outside the emissions footprint Measured in metric tons CO 2 equivalents Additional, Real, Measurable, Verifiable, Clearly Owned, Permanent (or account for lack of permanence), and have no negative environmental or social co-effects*

10 Types of Offset Transactions Voluntary Companies, non-profit entities and/or individuals who make voluntary commitments to reduce or neutralize their carbon emissions Offsets available from third-party vendors, e.g., NC GreenPower Duke University; Google Regulatory/Compliance Market created by a legal mandate that requires capped entities to reduce emissions, which they can (1) Do on their own, (2) Purchase from another entity capable of reducing emissions, or (3) Purchase from an entity within a non-capped sector, e.g., agriculture, landfills, forestry Many regulated entities purchase or develop projects that are not otherwise available to the public California s Cap-and-Trade Market; 4 project types currently recognized (livestock methane, forestry, urban forestry, ozone depleting substances)

11 Climate Change Impacts & Responses More carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere affects our climate, which could result in higher temperatures, more and increasingly severe storms, and longer droughts. Broad impacts of climate change include: Human health Infrastructure Transportation Systems Energy Food Water Supplies* Climate Change particularly affects: Coastal, Drought and Flood-Prone Areas (including vacation destinations) Budgets/Purchasing Decisions - Response to the effects of climate change comes at a cost, including increased cooling costs, repairs after severe storms and potential increases in insurance premiums. At the same time, some consumers respond favorably to products and services that mitigate their effect on climate and companies that offer climate-mitigating products and services, like offsets, can help to change behavior. *See, generally, U.S. EPA Climate Change Website, available at
