6 Strategic key issues for forest industry The EU forest industry can lead the way towards a carbon neutral bioeconomy, if the EU supports the competitiveness, development and investments of the forest industry. Development Framework in this respect is: 1. Forest Fibre Industry 2050 Roadmap, the EU industry wide Biofore vision including eg. carbon neutrality and sustainable use of wood: Refine, Reuse, Recycle and finally Renewable energy 2. EU Horizon 2020: Commission proposal for a 80 billion Euro research and innovation funding programme ( ) BioEconomy PPP as part of it 3. FTP and its SRA and Bio-Economy PPP to support and implement 1.& 2. 6 UPM

7 2050 roadmap 50% more value, 80% less fossil CO2, 40 years from now in a mature European market in a broad sector scope the forest fibre sector 7 UPM

8 The starting point is this possible? Figure 1: EU GHG emissions towards an 80% domestic reduction (100% = 1990). As solutions are sector-specific, the Commission sees a need to develop specific roadmaps in cooperation with the sectors concerned. 8 UPM
