A well-trained and alert crew may by a corrective action in an early stage, prevent critical situations from developing into accidents. This course gives your crew the possibility to train how to act in critical situations. A critical situation arises often when you least want it to; that is in narrow areas; when the fairway is crowded; in dense fog. The simulator exercises are located in such areas. The course is intended for a mix of junior and senior deck officers. DURATION: 3 working days 60

SHIP HANDLING Officers are being promoted to Captains. What about their skills in ship handling? In case of an incident/emergency, is there any officer on board, who is capable of replacing the Captain when it comes to manoeuvring the ship? Do you have demands of Ship Handling from vetting inspections? Allow your officers to train ship handling in a simulator before he/she shall do it for real. The SH course includes refreshers in squat, interaction and bank effects, propulsion systems, external forces on the ship. Different types of ships and propulsion systems are available in the simulator. Individual assessment of performance may be included as requested. Junior and senior deck officers, pilots. DURATION: 5 working days 61

ADVANCED SHIP HANDLING Do you have a need to improve skills in ship handling in severe wind and/ or tide conditions; when under tugboat assistance; in narrow ports and poor visibility? Do you have requirements on a specific harbor area or do you want your own ship type to be used in simulator training? This course can be tailor-made to meet your specific demands. At GigaMare we can create new vessel types and exercise areas. This opportunity enables training of mooring/unmooring operations of your own ship type(s) in your regular harbor area(s) in different types of weather conditions. Senior deck officers, pilots. DURATION: 3 to 5 working days 62

SHIP TO SHIP LIGHTERING OPERATIONS Will your crew be involved in ship-to-ship operations? The participants will realize the importance of using standard procedures, checklists, effective communications and gain ship manoeuvring experience with an emphasis being placed on the correct approach angle and matching of ship speeds. They will also observe the effects of ship to ship interaction. The practical part consists of a number of simulator exercises wherein STS operations are training underway mooring in different weather conditions. The STBL (mother vessel) is a Suezmax tanker while the manoeuvring vessel is a product tanker. The intensity of the exercises will be raised by adding critical situations, e.g. Malfunction on critical propulsion systems. The ICS/OCIMF Ship to Ship Transfer Guide (Petroleum) 4th Edition and its checklists are the main references of the theoretical part of this course. Deck officers with a minimum of 6 months seagoing experience as OOWs. DURATION: 3 working days 63

ice navigation An unprepared crew encountering areas of subzero temperatures, snow and ice conditions, may face challenges like communication problems with icebreakers, degraded stability due to ice loads on deck, damages to hull, propulsion and rudders, frozen water and fire lines on board, sea chests stuck by ice etc. Many of these problems are of major concern for the owner and might even end up in an unscheduled docking of a vessel. This course prepares the crew to enter any subzero winter area in a safe way. The special focus is on the Baltic Sea area, providing a broad knowledge of icebreakers in the area, how to communicate with them and how to take advantage of their available services. The participants will achieve awareness of the risks involved in navigating in ice and how to avoid damages to the vessel while on passage in ice-covered waters as well as in berthing operations. The course makes the participants aware of limitations of rescue operations and oil destruction and provides an understanding in how to act and survive in case of an emergency. The course topics are related to the issues described above, including any type of icebreaker assistance. Cadets, junior and senior deck officers. DURATION: 3 working days 64

electronic chart display and information SYStem Prepare your crew for the new requirements. Any ECDIS user should hold a generic and a manufacturer specific ECDIS certificate. An ECDIS course is of high importance also for a user of other Electronic Chart Systems. The features in modern ECDIS equipment are of great value and assistance to the user, if he knows how to use them to their outmost extent. If he lacks the knowledge, there is a great risk of overreliance to the equipment. A user, aware of the advantages and limitations of an ECDIS, contributes to a safer navigation. He/she is, in case of malfunction, able to maintain the control of the ship and safely step down in the automated level of the bridge navigation system. This MTC-accredited course follows closely IMO Model Course You have a choice of manufacturer-accredited training for MARIS, CONSILIUM.
