5 Shock Cooling shock cooling will cause the cylinders to crack. Fact or Myth?

6 Facts About 12 % of the heat generated by combustion departs from the engine via the cooling fins. 44 % goes out the tailpipe. 8% is dissipated through the oil. Published test data* showed that cutting engine power by half only reduces CHT by 10 percent or so. No data to indicate that massive shock heating, which occurs during takeoffs, harms the cylinders. Rain reduces CHTs by nearly as much as a 50 percent power reduction. Real shock cooling comes at the end of the flight when you pull the mixture to idle cutoff and the CHTs drop at more than 100 degrees per minute right away. Unless POH/AFM says different, Stay higher (safer/more efficient/etc..), and safely delay your descent. 8 Facts The engine superstitious insist that LOP causes burned valves because the engine is being operated too lean. But, as you lean the mixture, EGTs and CHTs increase with the CHTs peaking before EGTs. Continuing to lean the mixture causes CHTs and EGTs to drop and continue to drop (that s why the term peak is used). Does your CHT get higher when you close the Mixture Control? LOP means cool Don't be afraid of that red knob. Learn to use it! Check your POH/AFM/Engine manual to see if there are recommendations More Info See Avweb John Deacon Pelican s Perch #18

9 Power Reduction After Take-off

10 Facts Look at your POH/AFM. If it gives you a choice to do a maximum performance full power climb or a reduced power" climb, go for the Max Performance Climb. At full power, the engine runs cooler than at reduced power because it gets more fuel for cooling*. Get as much altitude as you can as soon as you can (it s a good thing) If the engine doesn't have a time limitation on fullpower operation, there's no need for you to create one, you aren't helping the engine live longer. *at same climb speed

11 Stomp em Out It s time for these engine myths to go away. Think about these. It s OK to make a reasonable power reduction to descend and get the airplane on the ground before you need a birthday cake because you re a year older Save fuel and prolong your engine life by operating at the fuel mixture setting that is right for your engine including LOP according to data, not blind belief your engine will run cooler and you ll climb better if it s approved for continuous full power operation and you take advantage of that as you climb out I m Melting, I m Melting. AAhhhhhh

12 Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous, But to even a greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.
