III Emergency procedures In-flight engine shut down: Fuel off. When engine quits - Ignition off Dead Stick landing Carburetor icing: If the engine RPM drops without the other parameters varying, it may be icing: pull carb heat full on, the speed should increases as soon as the Ice melts. If the icing is severe (continued RPM reduction, vibrations). Leave heat on and set full throttle. Forced Landing: Seat belts on Fuel shutoff off Glide Speed - 60 mph Shut off electrical equipment before landing Stall: Engine power to idle Maintain level flight to bleed off airspeed To recover: lower nose and apply power Property of C-FVOF Flying Club Page 7 of 12
IV Normal Procedures Check List Before the flight: check C of G. WALK AROUND INSPECTION: 1 CABIN Ignition off Fuel on Throttle closed Flight controls free. Neutral trim 2 EMPENNAGE Check general condition of the aircraft structure Elevators and rudder - locks removed and freedom of movement Tail wheel secure Check elevator trim secure 3 RIGHT WING Aileron - locks removed and freedom of movement Right main landing gear (brake & wheel) secure 4 NOSE Fuel: cap closed; check and confirm fuel quantity Engine clean (check for bird nests in spring) Carburetor air inlet filter- secure and clean Exhaust secure Check fuel tank sump for water, sediment and proper fuel grade Check oil level Check condition of the propeller is satisfactory Fuel cap closed Cowls and access panels closed and secure 5 LEFT WING Pitot tube: remove cover; check dynamic vent clear Left main landing gear (brake & wheel) - secure Aileron - locks removed and freedom of movement Property of C-FVOF Flying Club Page 8 of 12
Starting: Brakes on Stick full nose up Fuel on Prime when necessary - Throttle cracked Mags on Contact Person swinging the propeller will confirm the above commands and when ready will advise the pilot with the expression - Contact The pilot will confirm Contact After Engine Start Oil pressure must be established within 30 seconds otherwise cut off engine Avoid prolonged operation below 1,000 RPM Engine warm up at 1200 RPM Taxi: Use minimum power low speed minimum braking Before Take Off: No loose objects in cockpit Harness-on Fuel On Flight Instruments: check - Altimeter set. L & R Magneto check: 1500 RPM (maximum mag drop 75 RPM) set idle at 1,000 RPM carb heat on: check RPM for drop close throttle: check engine idles smoothly with heat on Carb heat off: set idle at 1,000 RPM Flight Controls: check free and full operating range. Property of C-FVOF Flying Club Page 9 of 12
Take Off: When clear, taxi to position and line up Open throttle smoothly rpm greater than 2,000 continue to accelerate. 40 mph rotate aircraft lift-off Keep aircraft close to the ground accelerating to 60 mph climb out Climb : Optimum speed: 60 mph Use full throttle. Cruise: Normal cruise: 2100 RPM Descent: Carb heat on before reducing power In prolonged descents, increase the engine speed from time to time normal glide speed 60 mph Minimum approach speed 56 mph Go Around: apply Full Throttle gently but firmly Carb Heat off Accelerate to and climb at 60 mph Landing: 3 point Use of the brakes: as necessary Shut Down: Throttle idle mag switch Left off then on right off then on then both off Property of C-FVOF Flying Club Page 10 of 12
V Weight and balance calculation Before the flight: check the loading The total weight must not be more than 530 kg The center of gravity must be between 0.27 m and 0.54 m aft of the reference datum (leading edge of wing at root) Example of loading: Weight (kg) x Lever Arm (m) = Moment (m-kg) Empty aircraft 340 x = Crew 150 x = +87 Gasoline 30 x = -6.3 Luggage 10 x +1,150 = Sum Hence: x = m kg / 530 kg = m The center of gravity is m aft of the reference datum Total weight does not exceed 530 kg: therefore the aircraft is properly loaded. Property of C-FVOF Flying Club Page 11 of 12
VI Performance Stall speed: In straight and level flight at a weight of 530 kg: Vs = 35 mph Practical ceiling: At the weight of 530 kg, practical ceiling in standard atmosphere is 11,480 ft (3500 m) reached in 60 min. Cruise: Normal cruise: 2100 RPM, Airspeed 85 mph Average consumption: 15 l / h Eco Cruise: 1800 RPM Average consumption: 12 l / h Demonstrated cross-wind: 15 kt Property of C-FVOF Flying Club Page 12 of 12
