1 PRESS INFO 7 December 2017 s latest gas engine opens for long-distance transport s new gas engines are designed for long-distance transport and construction sites 410 horsepower and 2,000 Nm well in line with diesel engines of a similar size Increased spark plug change interval and connected services like Maintenance with Flexible Plans ensures high availability with the OC13. The OC09 is also now available for the new truck generation. s launch of the OC13 and OC09 gas engines marks the start of alternative fuel solutions for the new truck generation. The OC13 is based on s well-proven 13-litre engine. The engine works according to the Otto principle with spark plugs and complete combustion. At the same time, an updated OC09 is being introduced into the new truck generation. There is a growing interest in operating vehicles on biogas or natural gas in countries such as Italy and France as a result of increased availability, improved infrastructure and good economic viability for hauliers. The sustainability aspects are also important even natural gas provides a CO2 reduction of approximately 15 to 20 percent. Underlying technology s gas engines are based on stoichiometric combustion, i.e. complete combustion of both fuel and oxygen. Similar to a petrol engine, the combustion is initiated by means of spark plugs. The pre-mixing of the fuel takes place upon entry into the cylinders. Throughout development, our aim has been to ensure the best possible driveability, explains Folke Fritzson, Senior Engineer at R&D and part of the team developing s gas engines. The performance and characteristics should correspond to that of a modern diesel engine. The new 13-litre gas engine is always available with Opticruise, s automated gearboxes. This means, of course, that gear changing and driving comfort are top-class for the driver, with fast, unhesitating gear selections. Carefully thought-out tanks The tank solutions are an important aspect of gas fuel operations. Both LNG tanks (for refrigerated, liquefied gas) and CNG tanks (for compressed gas) can be ordered directly from. LNG always provides greater range, as a significantly larger amount of fuel is available.
2 2 (5) In combustion, there is no difference between LNG and CNG, but there are significant differences in the operational range, says Fritzson. With LNG, it's up to 1,100 kilometres for a typical semi-trailer on a flat road. CNG usually provides a range of up to 500 kilometres. The latter is more than sufficient for many customers, for example in regional transports with a return to the home base and refuelling every day. The mileage that can be achieved before refuelling is required also depends on the type of driving and usage, and how hilly the route is. In order to improve safety, s engineers have turned the tank valves backwards, away from the direction of travel. This is a seemingly simple but important detail that reduces the risk of the valves becoming damaged if hit by stones or gravel. Huge potential for increased uptime with Flexible Plans offers Maintenance with Flexible Plans also for the gas engine range. Significantly greater maintenance precision can be achieved on the basis of the vehicle s actual usage pattern as continuously monitored through connectivity. The solution ensures that every single truck gets exactly the right maintenance at exactly the right time, thereby reducing time in the workshop and increasing uptime in comparison with fixed maintenance plans. "There are obvious customer benefits," says Anders Ekström, Head of Service Concepts at. Rather than customers having to keep track of fixed service intervals, their dealer will contact them to arrange a suitable time to visit the workshop. The maintenance interval can be up to 60,000 km. Gas engines that operate according to the Otto principle (with pre-mixing of fuel and spark plugs) have shorter service intervals than diesel engines. However, has achieved a significantly longer interval with the life span of the spark plugs: Typically, the spark plug intervals are now 45,000 kilometres, a 50 percent improvement over previous generations of gas engines, says Ekström. Everything indicates that we are heading towards a breakthrough for gas engines, including heavier trucks for long-distance transport and construction-site vehicles, says Henrik Eng, Product Director Urban, Trucks. Everyone can now benefit from good driveability and driver comfort. We also see that the rapidly growing gas infrastructure in several European countries spurs interest in using this alternative fuel.
3 3 (5) is launching an alternative fuel initiative for the new generation of trucks, with the world premiere of a new 13-litre gas engine. The new gas engine is combined with Opticruise and can be used, for example, for heavy long-distance operations with typical semi-trailer combinations. Gas engines are generally quieter than diesel engines, and are therefore well suited for urban environments. s new Euro 6 gas engines are expected to meet the requirements of the PIEK noise limitation standard, which stipulates a noise level of no more than 72 db(a) in areas with stringent noise limits. OC09 a true power unit While the OC13 is making its debut, the OC09 is also being introduced into the new truck generation, in a partly-updated version. Early on, brought out engines that ran on biogas or natural gas and complied with Euro 6. These are s wellknown five-cylinder inline 9-litre engines, which, just like their larger relatives, operate on the Otto principle and can be run on all types of vehicle gas. In characteristic style they have an unusually high torque for the engine type, which makes them useful in a number of different applications. As gas engines are generally quieter than diesel engines, they also work well in sensitive urban environments for different forms of distribution or maintenance applications, especially at night. is offering its 9-litre gas engine in two power levels for Euro or 340 horsepower. It is now making its debut in the new truck generation and will then be able to offer a reduction in gas consumption due to an improvement in aerodynamics, just like its diesel siblings. Using natural gas in the tanks reduces CO2 emissions by percent, while the use of bio-methane gas can result in a CO2 reduction of up to 95 percent. But
4 4 (5) regardless of the type of gas used, the driveability of s gas engines is in line with what conventional diesel engines can offer in terms of torque and power. Gas, and of course bio-methane in particular, are of particular interest from a European perspective with the potential for reductions in both CO2 and other emissions, says Eng. This engine is the starting point for s extensive offering for sustainable transport combined with the new truck generation.
