6 Sulfur test methods: no revisions planned Results of work conducted in CEN/TC 19/WG 27 An interlaboratory study (ILS) was carried out during summer 2016 in order to check the precision and include new products and fuel blends (like B30, E85 and XTL/HVO) containing up to 3,7 % (m/m) oxygen. Samples: 2 SP98, 2 SP95, 2 E10, 3 B0, 1 B7, 2 B30, 2 GTL and 2 HVO, containing 3 45 mg/kg of Sulfur. ISO 13032:2012 (EDXRF) ISO 20846:2011 (UVF) ISO 20884:2011 (WDXRF) The test method does not comply with ISO 4259 at 5 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg; The precision is worse than that reported in ISO 13032:2012; UVF and monochromatic WDXRF applicable at 5 and 10 mg/kg; Polychromatic WDXRF applicable at 10 mg/kg; Precision data are generally similar or better than ISO 20846:2011 and ISO 20884:2011; UVF and poly WDXRF: the minimum requirement for the degrees of freedom associated with the R estimate is not met the actual reproducibility may be significantly different than the estimate.

9 Revision of ISO Distillation characteristics Review of ISO 3405:2011 has identified several areas which require clarification and harmonization with ASTM D86: extension of the scope to: ethanol blends: from E5 to E20 (ASTM ILS 2010) B30 (a small study 4 instruments in 1 lab confirmed that can be included. A full ILS will follow) update precision of group 1,2, and 3 (ASTM ILS 2010) for T95, Group 4 has a valid range now of 260 C 360 C and an updated precision (Review of a 2006 ILS revealed the absence of some Group 4 samples having boiling point near 360 C, as well final boiling points are above)

15 Revision of ISO Cetane Number Current version is dated 1998 and refers to ASTM D It contains many technical differences compared to the current ASTM method It has cross references to annexes that have been removed in D613 many years ago This new edition (fourth edition) has been aligned with ASTM D613 15a The scope has been extended to paraffinic diesel from synthesis or hydrotreatment (XTL/HVO) An ILS [1] organized by CEN/TC 19 in 2013 confirmed that the method is applicable to XTL/HVO containing up to 7,0 % (V/V) FAME. The precision is comparable to conventional fuels.

16 Revision of ISO Cetane Number New procedures have been introduced: for rating samples having very high (> 73/75) cetane number for rating samples using Primary Reference Fuels PRFs (hexadecane and HMN) Note: PRFs define the Cetane Scale a criterion to determine if the cetane numbers calculated from two consecutive readings are acceptable The new digital (XCP) Cetane Panel can now be used as an alternative The enquiry (DIS) ballot will close

17 Revision of ISO 4264:2007 Cetane index A revision is planned because a significant statistical bias for FAME containing products exists: FAME directly impacts Fuel Density, T90 and to lesser extent T50 and T10 when blended in to a Diesel Fuel

18 Revision of ISO 3924:2010 Simulated distillation Why a revision is necessary: TheoriginofmanyoftheboilingpointsusedinthecurrentSimDis methods is unknown. Design Institute for Physical Properties (DIPPR) has reviewed the boiling points used for the n Alkanes The study was financed by 27 organizations, among them major oil companies. The Boiling Points covered in this study range from C1 to C100. These Boiling Points have been adopted by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and replaces the boiling points reported in the API tables of Project 44. ASTM is adopting the new boiling points in SIMDIS methods. ASTM D2887 passed the ballot: the new boiling points will first be in the non mandatory appendix Addition of the new boiling points to other Simulated distillation method is expected soon

19 Revision of ISO 3675 ISO 3675:1998 Laboratory determination of density Hydrometer method ISO 3675 is the referee test method in ISO 8217 (specifications for marine fuels) and ISO 3675 precision does not cover density measurement at the higher temperatures required for testing residual marine fuels. It is thus proposed that the standard is revised to address these issues. A new ILS is planned to determine density at high temperature

20 ISO 4259 update ISO/TC 28/WG 2 Determination and application of precision data in relation to methods of test 1 year extension requested for ISO and 2 NWIP Monitoring and management of precision data in relation to methods of test the scope was reduced according to the (Italian) comments received: We assume this new part of ISO 4259 will be a tool for monitoring the precision of test method by using the results of PT programmes. So we agree with the proposal, providing the scope will not cover the methodology for the design of a proficiency testing (PT) programme, as this is already covered in ISO and ISO/IEC

22 ISO/TC 28/WG 15 ISO 5163 and ISO 5164 test methods allow the determination of the standard knock intensity of a gasoline sample having RON/MON higher than 100 by using one of the isooctane and dilute tetraethyl lead (TEL) primary reference fuels blends that will bracket the sample fuel. The use of lead in gasoline has been prohibited in the US since 1995, and in Europe since TEL is still used as an additive in aviation gasoline. Most laboratories no longer have lead handling facilities. Moreover, if an engine has run for some time with leaded fuel the lead deposits on valves and seats can cause a memory effect on the following determinations The current RON/MON test methods cannot determine the octane higher than 100 without the use of leaded reference fuels, a revised test method is required by ISO to be developed using non leaded reference materials.
