Spring-Fest is an amazing event and details of the Show can be found in the May edition of the Connecting Rod. The June Meeting and Lunch is being hosted by Earl and Lindy Lively in Bogart, Georgia. As a special treat Earl has arranged for us to visit the George Bugg Auto Collection (Athens, GA) before the meeting. 2 Corvair Atlanta Meeting Minutes 05/17/2014 -Meeting was held at Golden Corral on Riverside Parkway in Lawrenceville Quantities of very good food were enjoyed by many. -President Tom Constantine opened the meeting. Old Business -- Helen was mentioned. It was a good show with profitable numbers. Tom extended thanks to those who attended and those who pitched in. Looking forward to next year. New business -- Tom suggested that perhaps we should make some club effort to attend a few local shows for better Corvair exposure to the non-corvair crowd. No one jumped up and said WOW count me in that sounds like a lot of fun. It was noted that we had done this in the past with mediocre results. Perhaps the timing is right now? If you think this is a great idea, do some research, pick a couple shows to attend and head up getting people to come out. --Al Hilderbrand has a template for club member business cards. He is working on a couple final details and should have them available for our use shortly. -- Earl Lively reports that he has a buddy with a large unusual car collection in Athens that we can visit just before the June meeting. The meeting at Lively s house would follow this excursion. So you could come to the area early and see the cars collection followed by the meeting or come later for just the meeting. Details should be in this newsletter (June). Lindy stated that if some of the gals would like to bring an extra dessert along at meeting time it would be appreciated. --Our Corvair Atlanta website was mentioned. Some thought it was dead. It is certainly out of date. There have been behind the scenes discussions over the last few days to see about at least getting it up to date. --Annual Corvair Atlanta elections will be upon us before we know it, therefore, we seek a member or members that would serve in the position of nominating committee. (This involves contacting members to find volunteers or suggestions for officers for 2015). Contact any officer if you would like to serve as this year s nominating person/committee. -- There was some discussion about meeting food costs and reimbursement. It was not known what the limits were, whether there is a cap, etc. Further discussion needed. 3 John Fitch only built one Phoenix prototype, and it s for sale By Max Prince Published May 29, 2014 FoxNews.com, Road & Track Soon after Chevy released the 140-hp Corsa engine option on its Corvair in 1965, Fitch began tinkering with it in his four-bay Connecticut garage. The resulting special-order fastback Sprint model became a favorite among those in the know, but it was actually his second Corvair-based project. As early as 1963, Fitch and his neighbor legendary cartoonist Coby Whitmore worked on a unique rear-engine prototype, intended as a super-exclusive grand touring coupe. Using a quadruple Webber carb setup, Fitch coaxed an impressive 170 hp from the base model car s air-cooled flat-six lump. He then attached a targa-top body designed by Whitmore (and cast by a carrozzeriain Turin, Italy) to a shortened 65 Corvair chassis, hooked up Girling disc brakes, and added a staggered 6- and 7-inch front-rear wheel setup. With a curb weight of just 2150 lbs, the Fitch Phoenix could get to 60 mph in 7.5 ticks en route to a 130-mph top speed some seriously impressive numbers for its era. Page 3

As you approach Athens you will, at some point, intersect Loop 10 which is the ring road around Athens (and may also be labeled Route 29, or 129). Take Loop 10, in the appropriate direction depending on where you are coming from, towards the North side of Athens and get off at Exit 13 onto N. Chase St. Head North on N. Chase St. for a short distance to the first traffic light, and then turn left onto Newton Bridge Rd. Follow this road until the 4-lane becomes a 2- lane, go another half mile and youwill see Estes Truck Co. on the left turn right onto Newton Bridge Industrial Way George Bugg s building is the second one on the left (approx. 150 yds).
