I apologize for not getting any Club Events organized during the Summer - I'm not very effective at working remotely. Moving forward I believe the leadership of Corvair Atlanta has some challenges that need to be addressed. One of those challenges is finding more ways to get the membership engaged in the Club. I still find Spring-Fest in April to be an amazing Event. We have Swap-Meets in March and September, a Christmas Dinner in December and Spring-Fest planning meeting in January. That's a good start, but I would like to be see us add 3 tech sessions and 3 "cruise-in" events, per year, to that list. I also realize the everyone is busy, but if you have the time to volunteer please contact me (corvair_1965_monza@yahoo.com) as there is a lot we could do and I am grateful for input or suggestions. 2 - Advertising Rates CORVAIR ATLANTA is a chartered Chapter (#303) of the CORVAIR SOCIETY OF AMERICA (CORSA) P.O. Box 607, Lemont, IL Membership in CORVAIR ATLANTA is open to all. Dues are $15 annually for single memberships and are payable by January 1st of each year. Family memberships are available for a flat rate of $20 for 2 to 5 family members. Dues for new members joining between January 1st and June 30th are $15 with an additional fee of $10 per name badge. Dues for new members joining between July 1 st and December 31st are prorated from the month joined plus $15 for the following year with an additional fee of $10 per name badge. Members not paid up by the February business meeting will be dropped from the club roster and mailing list. CORSA membership is encouraged for all CORVAIR ATLANTA members. CORSA dues are $45 annually. Paid-up Corvair Atlanta members are entitled to take part in all meetings, activities, tech sessions, receive The Connecting Rod, a publication of CORVAIR ATLANTA, and all club benefits. Regular business meetings are typically held on the second Sunday of each month, at a time and place published in the newsletter. Other monthly meetings or activities may also be held. Newsletter subscriptions for anyone living out of the state of Georgia are available for a fee of $12 annually. Article contributions are needed and always welcome. 5 In Memory of Barbara Paul With great sadness, we inform our Corvair Atlanta members of the passing of Raymond Paul's mother, Barbara Paul, on Friday, August 3rd. Mrs. Paul loved being a homemaker, dedicating her life to her children and her church. She and her husband, Fred, recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Barbara Paul was 75. Our hearts and prayers are with Raymond and his family. Contributions can be made in her memory to Shorter Avenue Baptist Church, 1410 Shorter Avenue, Rome, GA Please designate donations to the Prayers & Squares ministry, the Next Step ministry, or to the General Fund. 6 - A Look in the Rear View Mirror December 1995: C-A s membership roster listed 93 names which did not include mate s names. At the Jan meeting there were 56 members present and 4 guests probably a record. New Membership packets were created along with a brief Club History. If anyone still has one of these packets, particularly the Club History portion, alert Jack Allison who declares they have become non existent and would like a copy for his library of stuff. Can anyone prove him wrong about being non-existent? A December survey was mailed out to 93 members asking questions about meeting locations, meeting content, Springfest, Xmas Holiday Party and special events interests. A whopping 55 responses came back. A couple significant factors were revealed (most were insignificant). 80% liked meeting at the Smyrna Civic Center. It was equally divided about continuing the Springfest event with the dissenting half wanting it somewhere else! The majority liked the Christmas Party at a member s home, 4 at the Civic Center, 3 liked the restaurant idea and 7 had no response those 7 were most likely of the Jewish faith. So much for surveys. July 1, 1996: The C-A Board of Directors presented a comprehensive 1 ½ page Mid Year Report of all the activities of the Organization and again for the second half printed in January 1997 s newsletter. This was probably the first and only time this has ever been done. June 22, 1996: Over 650 cars participated in the AJC 'First Drive of the Century' from Atlanta Fulton Co. Stadium to Perimeter Mall shutting down roads like an Obama visit. This was to honor the 100th anniversary of the motor car. Several CA members participated along with a couple renegade Corvair owners. Was anyone out there in this? Someone, somewhere has a video tape of the parade. CORSA announced, at the 96 convention, that they were in hot water financially and dumped their management committee to seek another. One means of garnering new revenue was to require each CORSA Chapter to have it s members join CORSA. Will C-A adopt this plan making CORSA membership mandatory? A vote was taken and the answer was YES, but it will remain a bone of contention in future years. As an example, out of 90+ members in 1996, just 66 renewed by March of 97! Page 6

7 (continued on page 6) (A Look in the Rear View Mirror, continued from page 5) In a past Rear View Mirror I indicated the Club found a necessity to incorporate. This finally came to pass in December of 1996 thanks to the hard work of then member Gary Xantho and with the help of Mark Ligler. New Club By-laws were re-hashed and instituted and Club Officers breathed a sigh of relief for fear of individually being sued for unknown reasons. Many thought this was a milestone bigger than a successful Helen show. I guess it was. Novelty time. At the February 1997 meeting, a surprise guest, Craig Stadler, arrived with a 1960 Coupe covered with toys attached inside and out. He said that this was a cheaper out than a MAACO paint job and much more fun. What next? I ll tell you what s next. Next month we ll examine some Car Slang. Leeroy 7, your aging Historian Page 7

I'm told the car now has about 55,000 miles on it. I learned during a phone conversation that the car has been in a tractor shed for approximately 2 years. Some work had been done on it at that time, carbs rebuilt and new brake cylinders and he claimed the upholstery was good (the last time he looked), never wrecked.
