2 2 Fall is here, trees in the mountains with leaves turning, nice curvy roads with Ponies. Sounds like a commercial-- not really just time to plan our trip. October 25th, save the date we will cruise to Dillard, Georgia and have lunch at the "World Famous Dillard House". Dillard House is a very nice place to have a meal, country style eating, everything you would want to eat will be sitting on the waiting. In the past several years we have had 5-6 cars make the trip. Hope to see more this trip, we will leave out around 8 am and make a pit stop in Elberton. Of course our trip wouldn t be complete unless we stop and see "Goats on the Roof". Time wise it takes 2 1/2-3 hours, depending on stops. If you decide to go please me. Thanks to everyone who helped at our Home Depot Show. We had a great turnout--about 80 cars, trucks & several motorcycles. Shows cannot be successful without volunteers, and we have the best! CSRA Road Angels will be having their "Pumpkin Run" soon, be sure to pre-register and have a chance to win $ Also, they will be giving $ to the club for most cars. Last year we won the $500, would be nice to win and help toward our Christmas Dinner expenses. James Aldridge has a received a letter of intent to register for Martinez-Evans Christmas Parade. Please contact James if you would like to ride in the parade. Our December meeting/dinner will be on the 4th and it will be at "Be My Guest", located on Washington Road next to Academy Sports. I did send out an earlier , cost will be $15.00 each. I do have a list with those that ed me. Now its time to start working on selling adds for our 2015 National Show. Friends, we need everyone to sell. National Shows are not your one day show we have had in the past. Its three days, going 90 miles a hour without your pony cars, vendors, entertainment, meets & greets.when its over you will saying wow where did the time go, I had a blast! 3 From the Editor Zafera Aaron Fall is definitely in the air here, but no worries, the summer weather will be back in a week or two! There have definitely been more car shows lately with the cooler type weather. Wish I could be in two places at one time to participate in all of them, ya know? Our show at Home Depot was GREAT! We raised money for a great cause and the Home Depot staff was just amazing. I was at the front at the registration, which is my favorite because I get to meet all the owners and see all of the awesome cars as they come in. We also had a great turnout for breakfast at 6 in the morning. 6 am is early on a Saturday so I was surprised and enjoyed the conversation. I m also on the National Show committee as co-treasurer and as Don said, that s our next project that we really need to get started on. When you think about it, May 2015 is really not that far away!!! If you want to help with the National Show we definitely need help! You can contact me or Mike Anchor. 4 From the MCA Regional Director Mike Anchor First of all, I would like to thank everyone who pitched in to make our 5th Annual Home Depot Show a success! We could not do this without everyone s help and support. There were several newer cars that I haven t seen before and we had more Under 25 participants than we had last year. Now, we will turn our attention to the Southern Gateway Stampede, our 2015 MCA National Show! I am getting excited, I hope that you are too! It s time to get down to the nitty gritty and roll up our sleeves and get busy! May will be here before we know it! Thank you as well to those who provided input regarding the MCA Officers elections. As the Regional Director, I have done my patriotic Mustang duty and voted! Speaking of voting, please remember to cast your ballot for the MCA Board of Directors elections. The ballot must be postmarked by September 30, If you are an MCA member, the ballot is included inside the September issue of Mustang Times. 6 Ford News & Notes 2016 Mustang Shelby GT500 Prototypes spied in Denver, Colorado A pair of GT500 prototypes were spied in Denver, Colorado recently, with the two being snapped while they were having lunch. The guy who took the photos added that the Stangs sounded awesome. Compared to the Shelby GT350 prototypes, which were uncovered the other day, these are still under heavy camo. Aside from the obvious huge hood bulge, the rear apron also appears to be more aggressive, while the black-stripe taillights, a trademark of the GT500, seem to be present under the camo. Now that a leaked document has revealed the Shelby GT350 will be powered by a new 5.2-liter V8 instead of the Mustang GT s five-oh Coyote mill. Now that the new power plant has surfaced, the GT500 could use a supercharged version of the 5.2-liter block. By the way, Chrysler isn t the only one coming up with cool designations for new engines (Hellcat), Ford s 5.2-liter mill should be called Voodoo. What can we say, it must be naturally aspirated magic! For one thing, the 662 hp 5.8-liter V8 Trinity in the current Shelby GT500 has reached its output limits, while the upcoming CAFE emissions regulations may also stand in the way of its future development. Either way, we could expect the Shelby GT500 to make an upmarket muscle move. The expected 550 hp output of the Shelby GT350 is partially responsible for this, but most of the blame falls on the aforementioned Hellcat 6.2-liter Hemi V8. The latter s 707-pony output may have upset Blue Oval engineers to a point that we will see them bring even more muscle under the hood of the Stang. With the IRS (independent rear suspension) of the S550 Mustang, that power will be better kept in check. Then again, it needs to. For one thing, SRT brags they ve paid close attention to the drivability of the Challenger Hellcat and we re expecting Ford s SVT engineers to do the same. As for the SO of the new Shelby GT550 s V8, the big question here is whether Ford will offer an automatic alongside the Tremec six-speed manual of the current model com/news/2016- ford-mustangshelby-gt500-spiedtesting-with-hugehoodbulge html

7 News & Notes FIRST DRIVE: 2015 Mustang EcoBoost and 5-Liter V8 As we re sure you can imagine the new 2015 Mustang is beyond anything ever available in this price range in terms of looks, performance, handling and build quality but you knew that already. We got a chance to drive both a 2.3-liter EcoBoost banger, and the new 5-liter V8 through the hills and twisties around Malibu, California. There is also a V6 option but the small buy in for the EcoBoost makes the V6 a non-starter. Both of our Mustangs were hooked to the 6-speed manual trans with Hill Start Assist. We ll give you the quick rundown on the handling, but then we ll fill you in on what the Mustang Manager and lead engine engineer told us about some of the unspoken features you ll want to know about. With a tighter cabin and more horsepower than the previous Mustang, we found it remained neutral throughout each turn. No hop, skip and jump over uneven pavement as in previous Mustangs. Three suspension settings are available; Sport, Sport+, and Track, at the flip of a toggle, and there was a noticeable difference with each successive mode. Sport was the mild mannered setting, which we found most comfortable on the crappy asphalt roads on and around Mulholland Drive. But for cornering the Track mode, stiffest of the three, was what we switched to for the best results gripping through the turns, With the first-time-in-a-mustang independent rear, we could not get the rear to skip over rough surfaces. Applying more power, which there is plenty of, could induce oversteer, but you can confidently control that by letting off of the throttle slightly to slot it back or just power out of turns if you dare. There s plenty of power with both the EcoBoost and V8, with a slight amount of turbo spool before the power kicks in for the EcoBoost, whereas the V8 is always ready and waiting. We would run up to the rev limiter occasionally which eases the rpm s back as opposed to cutting out. Let s be honest; as much as we like the Ecoboost and the idea of a stompin little 4-banger, nothing sounds quite like a V8 and as superficial as this might sound, we have to have a V8 if for no other reason than it sounds like it means business. Shifting was precise and comfortable, as were the leather Recaro seats, and we liked the interior layout, preferring the toned-down engine-turning on the GT version. Our V8 Mustang was the GT Premium that included 20-inch aluminum wheels with P265/35R hides, the subdued blade decklid spoiler, rear diffuser, aluminum foot pedals, and lots of other electronic and appearance features. Talking to Tom Barnes, Mustang Vehicle Engineer Manager, we pried to find out what was in the works for future Mustangs. He didn t budge. Much. With the 2015 Mustang featuring aluminum hoods AND front fenders, we were curious about the switch to all aluminum bodies that the new F150 is seeing, and whether this might be in the cards for Mustang. He told us that Ford did develop an aluminum decklid and doors, but based on their myriad development targets, they went with keeping the aluminum stampings to the front fenders and hoods. 7

8 We spoke with a couple of the engine engineers and found that the change in this engine from previous 5-liters comes primarily in the intake and exhaust valve size. They both increased size from 12 mm to 13 mm each. Head porting and configurations were slightly improved, too. And the new composite intake manifold features charge motion control valves to partially close port flow at lower engine speeds. This increases the air charge tumble and swirl for improved air-fuel mixing resulting in better fuel economy, idle stability and lower emissions. It replaces the commonly used butterfly opening, and when the port is closed it is seamless and almost not tactually detectable, which composite construction brings. When we brought up the Challenger Hellcat, the engineers pretended they didn t know what that was. Upon further prodding they indicated they would likely leave the horsepower numbers to Dodge and instead consider looking at Mustang more from improved overall track and quarter mile numbers to the Hellcat s. Putting two-and-two together this is saying that less weight and better handling could trump the higher horsepower numbers of the Hellcat but they are always bound to their script and are not allowed to discuss Ford s possible forays into the future. And about the future Barnes told us that he feels that the market insists on a V8 in all Mustangs into the future, in case you were worried that the EcoBoost would someday displace the might V8. Ford has a bagful of model spinoffs to spice up the Mustang as it moves forward, like Super Snake, GT 500, and Boss 302 to name a few, and we can only imagine the improvements awaiting future iterations of this new Mustang, but make no mistake; the 2015 Mustang launches the modern muscle car into new and exciting territory. We can only hope that the next Camaro and Challenger will show as much swagger and sophistication as the 2015 Mustang. 8

12 YUK, YUK!!!! Murphy's wife borrowed his car and parked in the supermarket car park. Just as she came out laden with shopping, she saw a young lad break into the car, hot wire it and drive off. Naturally she reported the matter to the police. What did he look like?, the sergeant asked. I don't know, she replied, but I got the license plate! Anne meets up with Dana while she is picking up her car from the mechanic. Anne asks, "Everything ok with your car now?" Dana replies, "Yes, thank goodness. I was worried that my mechanic might try to rip me off, so I was relieved when he told me all I needed was $12 worth of blinker fluid." The boss returned from lunch in a good mood and called the whole staff in to listen to a couple of jokes he had picked up. Everybody, but one girl laughed uproariously. "What's the matter?" grumbled the boss. "Haven't you got a sense of humor?" "I don't have to laugh," she replied. "I'm leaving Friday." A man speaks frantically into the phone, "My wife is pregnant, and her contractions are only two minutes apart!" "Is this her first child?" the doctor queries. "No, you idiot!" the man shouts.
