4 Thirty SEMA Member Companies Supply Products for the SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women Vehicle to be unveiled at the 2012 SEMA Show then auctioned to raise funds for SEMA Scholarship Fund The all-female vehicle customization project known as the SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women, featuring a 13 Ford Mustang GT donated by Ford Motor Co., is on target for the unveiling of winning design High Gear at this year s SEMA Show on Tuesday, October 30, The customized vehicle, which was built at Source Interlink Media s headquarters in El Segundo, California, will be auctioned on ebay immediately following the reveal with proceeds slated for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation an organization dedicated to fostering the next generation of automotive aftermarket leaders and innovators. Thirty aftermarket manufacturers, retailers and suppliers provided more than 50 high-performance components for this historic all-female SEMA Mustang Build. Custom installations and vehicle modifications include an E-Force Supercharger System from Edelbrock; front and rear brakes from Wilwood; lowering springs from H&R; a suspension system from Whiteline USA; an exhaust system from MagnaFlow; a stereo system from Kicker; P Zero tires from Pirelli; and Forgeline GA1R wheels with a custom finish. In addition to the customization of a Ford Mustang GT by an all-female build team, many of the products donated to the build came from companies that are owned by women. SEMA Businesswomen s Network (SBN) volunteer Theresa Contreres removed underhood components so that the area could be painted black to conform to the project s paint scheme. It was amazing to experience the huge amount of support offered by the SEMA-member companies, stated Susan Carpenter, SEMA Businesswomen s Network (SBN) Product Coordinator. The response was overwhelmingly positive in support of the scholarship fund and to raise awareness of women in the automotive aftermarket. Many of the companies not only provided product at no charge, but also sent female representatives to install their product onsite. From the beginning, we felt that the build would have a lot of great energy, commented Lindy Jewell of H&R Special Springs. I knew our suspension would be a perfect addition to this amazing project. We encourage and support these unique ideas to broaden the aftermarket awareness. The SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women, completed late August, involved five primary teams and team leaders, including the Powertrain Team (JoAnn Bortles), Paint and Body Team (Theresa Contreras), Undercarriage Team (Mollie Lewis), Interior and Sound System Team (Kristin Cline), and the Quality Inspection Team (Jennifer LaFever). Being a part of this project has been thrilling, stated Coelette Chenier, marketing coordinator, MagnaFlow. With the help of my team member, Laurie Paolone, I learned how to successfully install an exhaust system as well as several other products. Now, I feel like I can do anything, and someday I m going to customize a vehicle of my own. The SBN vehicle build task force is comprised of Task Force Chair Rose Kawasaki (Exports International), Project Vehicle Coordinator Sherry Kollien (Ford Motor Co.), Assembly Coordinator Kellie Colf (Colf Creative Resources), PR/Media Coordinator Camee Edelbrock (Schiefer Media Inc.) and Product Coordinator Susan Carpenter (JR Products). Advisors include Mike Spagnola (Street Scene Equipment), Joel Ayres (Bedslide/ Tākit) and Marla Moore (Hypertech). For a complete list of the supporting SEMA member companies as well as a list of SBN team members and their bios, visit semamustangbuild. Follow the build progress online at motortrend and Exquisitely Crafted Pinewood Cars on Display at SEMA Show Some of the nation s best custom car and hot-rod builders recently took part in the 3rd annual Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Pinewood Builders Challenge. 8 Racing and Performance Keynote The Racing and Performance Keynote, to be presented on the opening day of the SEMA Show, Tuesday, October 30, from 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m., in the Vehicle Technology Center in the Grand Lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center will feature Nick Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro. Attendees can expect Woodman a racer himself to elaborate on how he and his team created a new product segment that defines and motivates the culture of motorsports and performance enthusiasts, and how their modular upgrade systems encourage people to buy deeper into the GoPro system. After receiving a degree in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego, Woodman founded an online promotions company Fun Bug. In 2001, Woodman sold Fun Bug and took off surfing and traveling the world. The decision sparked the idea to create the now-popular wearable and gear-mountable camera, and, in 2002, Woodman founded GoPro. After years of research and planning, the company released its first product, the GoPro HERO, a 28mm film-based camera that was worn on the wrist. Made up of some of Woodman s friends and family members, the early GoPro team established the company as a true innovator by continually iterating on the product, moving from a film-based camera to a digital still and video camera. A lifetime extreme sports enthusiast, Woodman was learning how to race cars when he was compelled to move the camera from his wrist to the top of his car. This simple idea led to an array of camera-mounting devices for everything from helmets to surfboards and even dog collars. In 2010, GoPro officially rolled out its first high-definition camera, the HD HERO, changing the game for in-motion image capture. GoPro has GoPro s 2011 SEMA Show exhibit featured the Monster Tajima vehicle that won Pike s Peak. grown to a team of more than 230 based in Half Moon Bay, California, and is considered one of the world s fastest-growing companies. Its line of wearable and gear-mountable cameras are used by more consumers, professional athletes and video production professionals than any other camera in the world. Today, GoPro products are sold in more than 140 countries worldwide. Hot Rodders of Tomorrow High school teams from across the country will compete for the national championship title by tearing down and rebuilding identical high-performance 350ci Chevrolet small-block engines fitted with top performance parts. Tailored after the efforts that go on between rounds of drag races throughout the country, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Showdown at SEMA is the culmination of eight preliminary competitions around the nation, each of which will send a regional champion to Las Vegas. The final tale will be told by the team with the fastest time and the least number of penalty points. Look for the final rounds this year on the outside plaza in front of the Central Hall near the Car Crazy Studio. Nick Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro, will be a featured speaker during the Racing and Performance Keynote session. GoPro s success in establishing its products as the world s most versatile cameras has established GoPro It as a new phrase in the lexicon of performance enthusiasts from motorsports to action sports. Simply put, the Front Row makes music from a vehicle s system sound better than it ever has with the listener experiencing staging, imaging and bass response actually like the artist intended up-close and live! The Front Row utilizes a familiar and simple analogbased control system, but underneath the dials lays a powerful micro-controller with all signal manipulation done in digital domain (28-/56-bit, double-precision DSP with 24-bit AD/DA converters) it is a must-have solution for controlling audio signal. The Front Row provides six channels (three stereo pairs) of 32-step, fully variable digital crossovers with selectable slopes and minimal phase shift for maximum system design flexibility. Input gain and output level controls for each section (front, rear and subwoofer) along with input clip indicators enable easy level matching for a clean, distortion-free setup. The subwoofer section includes a variable subsonic filter that preserves bass impact by protecting the woofers and focusing bass-amplifier power on what should be heard. Additionally, each section incorporates a Clip Limiter, a fast-acting compressor/ speaker saver that monitors input signal and prevents clipping and distortion while preserving overall output signal. The result is the clearest sound at high volumes. Most of the Front Row s dynamic features can be adjusted from the driver s seat using the convenient remote. Speaker time alignment provides complete sound-stage height, width and control to put a realistic stage with a focused center image where it should be on the vehicle s dash and not the floor. Simulated 5.1 Surround Sound mimics the live rear fill one experiences in a stadium or concert while legendary KickEQ Bass Boost and new SHOCwave (Sub- Harmonic Octave Creation) restores and equalizes the lowest lows, finding deep bass that previously wasn t audible. 42 Brought to you by Vizualogic Unveils New Headrest With Android Operating System It may look like any other industrial space in the neighborhood, but something exciting is happening inside. From their corporate headquarters in Corona, California, TMI s Vizualogic brand is ramping up for an exciting new launch at this year s SEMA Show. With new products and a new look, Vizualogic is poised to make a breakthrough in the automotive entertainment field. Vizualogic got their start in rear-seat entertainment in 1999 with TMI s Back Seat Theater, a flip-down roof mounted display with a remote VHS player. The product was a hit, and the brand grew exponentially with TMI s move to a larger facility in TMI s experience in matching OEM interiors for custom cars quickly led to the creation of their headrest entertainment line. By integrating high-quality screens into a headrest that perfectly matched the vehicle s OEM upholstery, they expanded into a whole new field. That history of innovation has led to a formidable product lineup. Vizualogic s line of headrests feature dual DVD players, USB and SD card connections, wireless headphones and industry-leading high-resolution glare-free screens with impressive viewing angles. Each screen is carefully fitted in a handmade headrest that is matched to a specific car, ensuring an OEM fit and finish. Once they re installed, you d be hard-pressed to tell the car didn t come that way from the factory. If in-headrest video isn t your thing, Vizualogic has you covered. They offer a variety of roof-mounted flip down monitors, which feature a larger screen the whole family can enjoy. For smaller cars, their Roadtrip Elite center-console display is the perfect fit. It features an 8-in. screen that can easily be viewed by rear-seat passengers, and it folds away when not in use to save space. They also have a universal post-mounted system that features dual 9-in. screens. Vizualogic has some exciting products for the driver too: they offer a rear-view mirror with an integrated GPS screen and hands-free Bluetooth connection to your mobile phone. The Blue- Logic system integrates any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone with the car s audio system. The system allows music streaming and voice calls from mobile phones, and automatically mutes the radio when a call is in progress. Their newest product is the Hindsight Flip, a small motorized screen connected to a rear-view camera. The screen folds out when the car is in reverse to assist the driver with blind spots behind the car, and stows itself away once you shift back into drive. Despite their success with their current product line, Vizualogic isn t going to rest on their laurels. We ve always stayed on the cutting edge, said Marketing Director Aaron Lyle, and we re really excited about what we have coming up this year. With more and more people living in a digitally connected world, we think the time is right to integrate that technology into what we do. Vizualogic will unveil their latest product at the SEMA Show in October: a new headrest featuring the Android operating system. Android is a full-fledged mobile operating system that many users are already familiar with from their smartphones and tablets. Passengers would be able to browse the Internet, check , play games and much more, in addition to enjoying their favorite songs and movies. Lyle explained, When Vizualogic started, the VHS was all the rage. Since then we ve added DVD and digital video files. Now we re able to offer something that s leaps and bounds beyond audio and video. Vizualogic is launching a whole new theme to go with this year s exciting new products. Of course they ll be showing off their range of in-headrest entertainment, including products for plenty of the hottest 13 vehicles. They ll have a bigger, re-designed booth with a whole new look and demos of all their products. The most exciting feature will be their new Android product, though. As Lyle explained, Our team is really pumped up for the Show this year. Android is huge, and what we can do with it is very exciting. It s going to change rear-seat entertainment as we know it. Come check out Vizualogic s booth #11745 at this year s SEMA Show. TM 42 SEMA Show Daily

43 HOT ROD ALLEY Join the SEMA Cruise The SEMA Show is undoubtedly a highlight of the year for the industry, but the highlight for the local populace is the SEMA Cruise, a feature that was introduced last year. At the conclusion of the Show, as the booths are dismantled and the products are packaged for shipment home, the display cars are driven out of the convention center. While this parade of rolling art has always been highly anticipated, it became an official part of the Show in When the SEMA Show officially ends at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, the SEMA Cruise begins. With the Show s carpets rolled up, you ll want to stick around to see this one last automotive blast. Featuring awards, giveaways, entertainment and even seating for the crowds who throng to view the hundreds of vehicles, the parade will once again conclude another eventful Show. Hot Rod Alley Is More Than a Trip Down Memory Lane One of the SEMA Show s oldest sections, Hot Rod Alley spotlights the craftsmanship and creations of a market that many consider the cornerstone of the specialty-equipment industry. But don t get the notion that this section remains mired in any sort of oldschool past. Innovation is as alive in Hod Rod Alley as it is anyplace on the SEMA Show floor, said SEMA Show Director Tom Gattuso. In fact, with a substantial number of fresh entries each year, the exhibitors of Hot Rod Alley are no strangers to our Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase section. This industry category is constantly benefitting from the sort of creativity and technology that continues to enthuse buyers and other Show attendees. While admittedly not the largest section of the Show, Hot Rod Alley continues to grow in size and number of exhibitors each year, and encompasses 30,000 sq. ft. for 2012 a healthy 12% increase in area over last year. Moreover, the history and value of the hot-rodding segment continues to serve as inspiration for the entire specialty-equipment industry, and its styling influences and performance enhancements are evident in many of the Show s custom display vehicles, regardless of market. Hot rod is one of the markets that represents the industry s history of increasing vehicle performance through specially crafted parts, said SEMA Vice President of Communications and Events Peter MacGillivray. What helped give birth to an industry in the 40s is still going strong today, and Hot Rod Alley showcases generations of performance and craftsmanship from leading companies. Located in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Hot Rod Alley is positioned between the SEMA Show s Racing & Performance section and Mopar Alley, a fitting location for a core exhibiting space rooted in performance heritage. 46 Show Feature Don t Miss SEMA Show Industry Awards Banquet Comedian Christopher Titus Headlines At this year s SEMA Show Industry Awards Banquet, attendees will enjoy comedian and self-professed car guy Christopher Titus. After years of experimentation with dark and personal storytelling, he debuted his one-man show, Norman Rockwell is Bleeding, at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles. It was from this performance that the dark comedy, Titus, was born on Fox. The show earned Titus a Writer s Guild nomination as well as an Emmy nomination, and Newsday called him TV s most original voice since Seinfeld. Inspired by such greats as Woody Allen, Steve Martin and Bill Cosby, who wrote, directed, produced and performed, Titus has sold ideas to NBC, ABC, FOX and Comedy Central. His pilot Special Unit which is about four disabled detectives, is edgy and laugh-out-loud funny. Titus describes it as The Shield with handicapped people and is shooting for film production in After watching Titus perform live, there is no doubt that he is one of the best comics working today. BSB: This is the third year for the Repairer Driven Education (RDE) sessions. What is your general feel for RDE this year as far as attendance numbers and how it has been received? Schulenburg: The general feel so far has been fantastic. I think it s going to be bigger and better, and I think we re building momentum. As of late July, the early registration numbers were up almost 300% over last year, and I think that reflects a couple things. I think it shows the caliber of the courses that we ve had for the past two years and the lineup this year. I think it also reflects the familiarity people now have with RDE. Two years ago, this was an event with a brandnew format that the industry was kind of figuring out, and I think this year, the industry has decided earlier that, Hey, this is where we want to be. We re seeing a lot of companies wanting to support it, and we re continuing to receive great support from a lot of our existing sponsors. Content-wise, I think everyone can expect information that once again is relevant and can provide tangible benefits to people who can return home from the Show and apply what they learned to their businesses. 50 Executive Interview, Continued from page 49 BSB: What specific subject matter will the RDE sessions cover, and what presenters have you lined up? Schulenburg: It s really a wide cross-section, everything from hybrid power and platforms with Dave Gruskos to marketing for more sales and profit with Frank Terlep. The marketing class has gotten really strong pre-registration. Looking at business diversification, we brought some folks in from SEMA to talk specifically about that topic on the opening day and that s a brand-new segment they re custom crafting for us. We see that opening-day session as a perfect way to help the people who haven t been to RDE before figure out how being in that space can help benefit their businesses. Our headline presentation on Friday will focus on innovation in business. It will be a self-guided panel discussion on how emerging ideas are the lifeblood for your business and how they provide the competitive edge to grow your business and profit margins. The folks on the panel are people who have had great foresight and been innovative and have harnessed that to rethink how their business works, how it services their customers and how it handles jobs to differentiate themselves from other businesses in their markets. BSB: Besides the different sessions and speakers, is there anything else new and exciting with RDE this year? Schulenburg: There s a couple things. One is the return of our sky villa afterhours reception, and that will be on Thursday night. Last year, you had to be an RDE participant to get invited, but this year anyone can register for it by visiting It s going to be in a different suite this year that will be even more spectacular than the space it was in last year. In fact, it was actually one of Michael Jackson s favorite spots. We ve got a couple fun tricks up our sleeves, but I don t want to give everything away just yet. All I ll say is that the people who attended the reception last year know the caliber of event it was, the level of people that were there and the networking opportunity it presented. It s just magical that you get to be in a space that very few people get to see. These are exclusive suites reserved for very special people who are guests of the hotel. This is the third year for the Repairer Driven Education (RDE) sessions. We also switched up our SCRS open board meeting this year. We ve traditionally held this meeting in a hotel ballroom somewhere, where it s set up rather formally and we go through what we re working on and give some updates to our members. This year, however, we re making it more unique and fun by holding it after Show hours at our booth on Tuesday evening. This will enable collision repairers who want to learn about SCRS to have the unique experience of doing so on the Show floor after hours without all the crowds. So it s going to be a little bit like a networking reception but also an open address to our members. BSB: The hot topic of the year has been PartsTrader. Will there be any discussion of the controversial parts bidding program at RDE? Schulenburg: Obviously that s going to be part of the update we give at the SCRS open board meeting on the Show floor, primarily because it s a big focus for our membership. It will also be addressed on Thursday in the RDE session called, Bidding Wars: A Global View on the Possible Economic Impact of Insurer Involvement in Parts Procurement, presented by David Newton-Ross of the Collision Repair Specialists of Australia. David has been doing a lot of research for us both in New Zealand and Australia and getting repairer feedback, so it should be a compelling two-hour session that will explain what s going on globally with the development of insurer involvement with parts procurement and bidding platforms. 52 Executive Interview, Continued from page 50 BSB: Aside from RDE and the open board meeting, what kind of presence will SCRS have at the SEMA Show? Schulenburg: We re going to have a free technology innovation forum on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m., which was added after the first schedule came out. We re hearing a lot of reports on collision avoidance technology and other technology that s going to have a potential impact on our industry. Through the Manufacturer Kiosk Program, an exhibitor with a booth in another area of the SEMA Show is eligible to host a kiosk that will be located in the Powersports & Utility Vehicle section of the Show. The kiosk program was introduced in 2011 to assist many traditional SEMA Show exhibitors that have branched out into the powersports market, said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events. Meanwhile, they are able to maintain their primary booth location and focus on other products. It s like being in two places at once. Of the 60,000 buyers that attend the SEMA Show each year, one in four indicates that they are interested in powersports products. As a result, a dedicated Powersports & Utility Vehicle section was introduced in Because the SEMA Show represents all segments of the automotive parts and accessories industry, it s the ideal venue for businesses to discover new trends and identify new markets, said MacGillivray. The powersports market is closely tied to many of the SEMA Show s core segments. As a result, many exhibitors and buyers have expanded and found great success in the area. For only $499, manufacturers can host a kiosk that will be located in the Powersports & Utility Vehicle section in upper South Hall, apart from their primary booth in the Show. The kiosk will display the company branding and marketing materials. 59 Continuing a Strong Tradition Global Tire Expo Ready to Deliver! Anyone who has attended the annual Global Tire Expo (GTE) Powered by Tire Industry Association (TIA) knows it has been a smashing success. Hundreds of exhibitors from all corners of the tire and tire service industries meet with thousands upon thousands of attendees the single-largest gathering of tire dealers, tire companies and suppliers in North America. Bar none! And tire professionals across the continent will show their continuing support for the GTE, coming this year from October 29 November 2 in association with the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Tire Review Recognizes Outstanding Tire Dealer Winners of the 2012 Tire Review Top Shop Awards presented by Ammco/Coats, honors the best of the best independent tire dealers in the United States and Canada, will be announced during TIA s special Tire Industry Honors event at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hotel on Monday, October 29. The 2012 Top Shop Award winner will also be honored at TIA s annual Industry Honors event, set for Monday, October 29, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hotel. That event runs from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m., followed by TIA s Welcome Reception from 7:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. After an outstanding 2011 GTE and record early registration and exhibition commitments for 2012, the Tire Industry Association certainly recognizes the value of this surge in interest. The strong attendee and exhibitor presence is proof positive that TIA s efforts are reaping positive results, said TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield. We appreciate the support these tire dealers, tire manufacturers and parts and equipment suppliers are showing and are especially pleased to know that the GTE is resonating with them. As of mid-july, hotel reservations for the Show were up 31% from the same time last year, TIA said, and the association expects that the 2012 GTE will exceed the popularity of last year s convention, which saw the record-breaking attendance of 132,000 industry business leaders and 61,000 buyers. And the July report showed a 7% year-over-year increase 231 signed on for the GTE alone, 42 of which are first-time exhibitors. 60 Continuing a Strong Tradition, continued from page 59 We re excited that the 2012 SEMA Show and the GTE is continuing to build on the outstanding response from the GTE last year. That momentum is more meaningful and relevant than ever before for tire manufacturers and buyers, said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. The dedicated GTE section in the South Hall and the expanded educational program will help buyers discover the potential that the tire industry has to offer. The GTE will also include expanded educational sessions specific to the tire industry, including the hugely popular 10, Truck 10 and 2 and sessions during the first three days. Each educational track, said TIA, will feature a session relevant to tire dealers led by the most knowledgeable experts in the tire industry. The GTE educational sessions offered provide tire-industry attendees with the best of both worlds they can get to upto-the-minute, relevant and entertaining information from some of the world s leading experts in the tire industry and still have time to make important business contacts and meet plenty of potential suppliers, said Littlefield. Last year, GTE attendees thoroughly enjoyed two opening night special events: the Wine & Cheese Social and Tire Industry Honors. Both events will take place at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hotel on Monday, October 29. The Wine & Cheese Social will start at 5:00 p.m. and is free to TIA members and GTE attendees. Immediately following the Wine & Cheese Social, from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m., will be Tire Industry Honors. Extremely well-attended last year, this year s event will honor 2012 Tire Industry Hall of Fame inductees, as well as award winners and honorees from tire-industry publications, such as Tire Review s Top Shop Award winner and recognition of the outgoing TIA President Larry Brandt. In addition, the event will see the formal installation of TIA incoming President Randy Groh. Following the Tire Industry Honors event from 7:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m., TIA will host its GTE Welcome Reception, which will be held at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Council Booth ARMO Central the booth shared by ARMO and the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) is located at space #23395 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) in the heart of the Restoration Marketplace. Visitors can check out photos of all the cool, new restoration products that were on display in the ARMO New Products Showcase at Spring Carlisle in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The photos will run on a looping flat-screen display along with other ARMO and SEMA information. Also on display in the booth are a handful of beautifully restored cars. The booth is always staffed with an ARMO volunteer and/or a SEMA staff person ready to answer questions, engage in discussions about ARMO- or SEMAmember benefits and sign up new ARMO members. ARMO Industry Awards Reception ARMO leads off a week of council activities with its annual Industry Awards Reception Tuesday, October 30. The event will take place in Ballroom C of the Las Vegas Hotel (LVH) from 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. We modified the program last year, said ARMO Chairman Alex Tainsh of Parts Unlimited Interiors. Instead of a formal program, we promoted a relaxed, networking environment. Based on all the positive feedback, we intend to stay that course for ARMO Open Council Meeting ARMO will conduct an open council meeting in Pavilion 1 at ARMO leads off a week of council activities with its annual ARMO Industry Awards Reception, Tuesday, October 30, in Ballroom C of the Las Vegas Hotel from 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. the Las Vegas Hotel, Wednesday, October 31, from 7:15 a.m. 9:00 a.m. This open council meeting is open to all current ARMO members and it is the best opportunity for members to interact with their Select Committee. The Select Committee is a group of representatives elected by the ARMO members, said ARMO Chair-Elect Dennis Roberts of Distinctive Industries. The Select Committee is charged with developing and delivering programs and projects that benefit ARMO members. Like any elected body, though, we need to hear from members. We can send surveys, solicit feedback on Facebook, etc., but nothing beats a face-to-face dialogue. Except for the Long-Range Planning meeting, this is the only opportunity for an ARMO member to meet with the entire Select Committee. We absolutely want to see as many members as possible at this meeting. We will update the group on the latest happenings from ARMO, but we really want to hear from the members. What are we doing well? What should we be doing that we aren t doing now? It s early in the morning, I know. But bring your ideas; we ll bring the coffee! ARMO Roundtable The ARMO Roundtable discussion which takes place Thursday, November 1, from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. in Room N255 (North Hall) of the LVCC is another SEMA Show staple for the restoration industry. This year s title is, I Hired Him, I Trained Him, He Left Me. As the title suggests, the topic is Human Resources and the Small Business. There will be several successful restoration industry professionals and an HR expert on hand to lead the discussions. However, it should be noted that this is a Roundtable Discussion, where the intention is to hear from membership. Be sure to attend the ARMO Roundtable and exchange ideas with members of the ARMO Select Committee. Help ARMO help you. ARMO-Sponsored Education Seminars One of ARMO s primary goals for members is education. To that end, ARMO is sponsoring a seminar during Education Days at the 2012 SEMA Show entitled, Modernize Electronics in Hot Rods, Classics and Musclecars, which will be held Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. in Room N257 (North Hall) of the LVCC. 74 The SEMA Data Cooperative An Industry Solution for Data Independence By Jon Wyly For more information about the SDC or how to join, visit or call As the SEMA Data Cooperative (SDC) gets up and running, its officers are getting a lot of questions and comments from participants, curious observers and skeptics. They range from those who are currently active in managing their data to folks who are just realizing that product data management is fast becoming a requirement to do business in today s marketplace. In this article, we will address a few of the most commonly asked questions to clear away some of the fog surrounding this important, game-changing effort. As always, we are happy to talk one-on-one with anyone interested in learning more about the SDC and are available at or visit us online at Q: I m a supplier who wants to take control of my product data, but we don t know where to start. How can the SDC help us get on the right path? A: The SDC is as much about education and training as it is about actually managing data. Our fulltime help desk is dedicated to teaching the process from whatever level the customer needs, beginning with an introductory session to identify the current state of your data. Then we walk you through a process to gather key data points from your existing systems and create a standards-compliant version to build on. This process will require some time investment on your part but will lead to a lifetime of benefits as you take ownership of this critical business element. Q: I am already having my data managed through a third-party provider. Why do I need the SDC? A: An important part of the SDC is the data repository where all data is stored. Our goal is to create a centralized place for all industry data to securely reside, providing a one-stop resource for receivers [customers] of all kinds. We are already establishing valuable receiver relationships, and we will provide unlimited data exports in standard PIES/ACES formats or custom exports specific to the receiver s needs, with only a small annual membership fee. This repository relieves you of the need to create and export data in countless formats and enables you to manage who gets your data though a custom online interface. We welcome data feeds from your third-party service, provided they meet SDC requirements for completeness and pass our validation tests. Q: I like what I am seeing in the beta phase. What is it going to cost once the production system goes live? A: As a non-profit association, SEMA is ideally suited to provide quality education, the latest technology and expert services at the lowest possible cost. Therefore, we are anticipating a total cost to suppliers for all on-boarding, data validation, secure storage and unlimited data exports to range from $300 $600 per month, depending on the amount of storage space required. This will enable all companies regardless of size to benefit from the most state-of-the-art data facility and services while taking control and complete ownership of this valuable business asset. Q: I don t have a data expert on staff and know nothing about ACES and PIES. How will I be able to manage these complex data standards? A: A data expert is not required with the SDC, but you will likely find that you will want to assign responsibility for your data files to a trusted employee as you engage with the Co-op. Our help desk will work with that individual to gather your data in whatever format you have (even a simple spreadsheet), and we will use our tools to begin the process of making your data compliant with the standards. As we identify missing or inaccurate data, we will work with your contact to fill in the blanks, correct errors and prepare your new standards-compliant data for export to your customers. As of this writing, the SEMA Data Cooperative has more than 90 leading companies engaged in the beta phase. We re on target to show a working model of the production system at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, with January as the target launch date for the full production facility. New Discounted Hotel Options This Year at the SEMA Show SEMA along with its official housing bureau, Travel Planners has negotiated discounted hotel rates with several properties for this year s SEMA Show that have not been in the official block in a long time. Many people know that downtown Las Vegas has numerous hotels that are consistently lower priced than hotels on the Strip. SEMA has partnered with two hotels downtown the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino and The Plaza Hotel & Casino, both of which have undergone extensive renovations and expansions in the last few years. The Golden Nugget is rated four diamonds by AAA and the Plaza just reopened after a year-long renovation to all new hotel rooms, restaurants and amenities. Rates start as low as $65 per night at the Golden Nugget with Show days $85 per night, and the Plaza is $65 for all nights of the Show. With these new hotel partners, SEMA will provide complimentary shuttle service from Downtown Las Vegas to the Las Vegas Convention Center, further saving money and providing value to attendees and exhibitors coming to Las Vegas this year. If you are looking for a new place to stay on the Strip this year, Mandalay Bay has joined the list of official partner hotels at a low rate of $80 per night on many nights and $110 per night during Show days. This includes all the benefits of the $25 resort fee, which will be waived if you book through SEMA s official housing bureau, Travel Planners. SEMA will also provide complimentary shuttle service between Mandalay Bay and the Las Vegas Convention Center during the SEMA Show. If you want to stay in a hotel within walking distance of the Las Vegas Convention Center, and casinos are not your thing, SEMA has added the Embassy Suites at the Las Vegas Convention Center to its list of partner hotels. The Embassy Suites is offering a discounted rate of $169 per night while supplies last. These will go fast, so book soon if you want to stay there. SEMA and Travel Planners have worked hard to ensure your hotel accommodations are easy to make and affordable. If you have any questions, call Travel Planners at There are numerous travel agencies and brokers soliciting your business, yet SEMA does not approve or support any efforts by such companies. Travel Planners is the only authorized agent of the SEMA Show. All other agencies have no affiliation with SEMA and reservations made through such companies will be at your own risk. 74 SEMA Show Daily

76 SEMA-MEMBER BENEFIT Members Collect Specs to Create Exportable Products for Toyota HiLux, continued from page 75 All of the participants were provided time with the HiLux over the two-day session to examine the truck inside and out in an effort to gather the specs and data needed to produce HiLux parts and make them available for export. This session and the ones that followed were made possible by a Department of Commerce Market Since its introduction, the HiLux has achieved nearly 14 million units sold in 135 countries worldwide. Development Cooperator Program grant from the U.S. government, which is working in partnership with SEMA to identify and create export opportunities for SEMA members. I applaud SEMA for their creativity, providing access to a new vehicle of this type, enabling small- and medium-size specialty parts manufacturers to prepare for this new opportunity and to export more products to new overseas markets, said Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez. The HiLux was chosen by SEMAmember manufacturers because of its popularity overseas and for the variety of opportunities it presents for specialty-equipment and accessories ranging from off-road components and utility products to items that enhance interior comfort and convenience. The HiLux is widely available and accessorized overseas, but it s not sold here in the United States, stated Linda Spencer, SEMA director of international relations. Because of that appeal and popularity, it s the ideal vehicle for SEMA members to measure, make and prototype parts that are exportable. Since its introduction, the HiLux has achieved nearly 14 million units sold in 135 countries worldwide. It is also a top-selling vehicle in key countries/regions, including Australia, New Zealand, Europe, South Africa, Central America and the Middle East. SEMA is working closely with the U.S. Department of Commerce for this session, as well as a number of other programs all aimed to help small U.S. companies export overseas, continued Spencer. This is just the beginning, and plans for the second vehicle and subsequent measuring sessions are already in the works. 89 TOOLS & EQUIPMENT Product Knowledge Direct From the Source SEMA Show Product Training Sessions Provide First-Hand Education By Steve Campbell Providing product training to retailers and installers helps them sell. Understanding what a product does allows the end user to take advantage of its full capabilities. The SEMA Show will help bring both concepts to fruition through a series of product training sessions that will be conducted by exhibitors, allowing a complete understanding of how products can best be installed, used and marketed. Exhibitors are being invited to promote and demonstrate the technical applications of their products through product training sessions during the 2012 SEMA Show. The 30-minute sessions (with an additional 30 minutes set aside for room and demonstration preparations) provide each participating exhibitor access to an LCD projector for use with a laptop computer as well as a podium with a microphone, and exhibitors may also use their own demonstration equipment. For instance, will explain how to use phone-call tracking to improve the return on investment for pay-per-click marketing, including topics such as creating multiple campaigns by product category, dividing campaigns into ad groups, guidelines for landing pages and using dynamic call-tracking software on websites and landing pages. Another exhibitor, Wagner Systems Inc., will present a session on the basics of powdercoating, which will cover application equipment, powdercoating processes and troubleshooting problems on finished products. And Net Driven, New Products Preview Tools & Equipment at the 2012 SEMA Show CoolBox Booth #10460 CoolBox takes the sweat out of the shop. Like a breath of fresh air conditioning, this simple, powerful and quiet climate-control solution from Cool-A-Zone takes proven, evaporative-cooling technology to the next level. Utilizing water-soaked cooling pads, CoolBox can lower the ambient air temperature from 10º 25º depending on the climate. Running on less than $1 a day, CoolBox is mobile, OSHA-compliant and easy to operate. Information: or an Internet marketing and websitesolutions company, will offer a session on using online resources to grow an automotive business effectively and economically, including search-engine optimization, social media and searchengine marketing. Bartec USA, a leader in developing diagnostic tools for tirepressure monitoring systems (TPMS), will use its session to showcase its full product line and explain how the tools function. TPMS is a pretty hot topic in the tire and wheel industry right now, said Scot Holloway, CEO of Bartec, now in its seventh year as a SEMA Show exhibitor. At our product session, we will talk about TPMS in the context of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requirement that the systems be operable when they leave a repair facility. The sessions will be held in the meeting rooms adjacent to the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, and exhibitors may apply to host a session until October 12. The cost is $125 per session, which is due with the session application. (An application must be completed for each session.) Exhibitors wishing to apply for a session may visit, The sessions are free to SEMA Show attendees, who may find further information and a list of currently scheduled sessions at education. Lists of sessions will also be included in the SEMA Show Pocket Guide, which will be distributed at the SEMA Show. 91 Rev Up Your Online Customer Experience With Logistics How to Deliver the Goods to Online Shoppers By Kristin DeBates A recent study by comscore revealed new insights into the consumer online shopping experience. Commissioned by UPS, the comscore study polled more than 3,100 online shoppers and evaluated consumer perceptions and shopping habits ranging from prepurchase to delivery and even the returns process. The online retail market for automotive parts and accessories continues to emerge as a tremendous growth opportunity for the aftermarket parts industry. While appraisals of sales volumes within the online auto parts industry vary, estimates range from $1.8 billion to $4 billion annually. The recent 2012 SEMA Annual Market Report found that consumers (46.2%) cited chain auto parts stores and specialty parts stores as their primary outlets for purchasing automotive parts and accessories; however, online retail was the next highest outlet, with 24.5% of respondents reporting that they primarily purchased automotive parts from online retailers. The online retailers ranged from online auction sites and chain auto parts online stores to online-only retailers. It is clear that the popularity and potential for online retailing of automotive parts serves as a growth opportunity for the industry. Taking advantage of this opportunity will require automotive suppliers and retailers to look at the customer experience in a new way from the perspective of an online shopper. A recent study by comscore revealed new insights into the consumer online Continued on page 92 BUSINESS SERVICES Current as of August 23, 2012 $2.95 Guys Accent Marketing Group Advertising Edge Inc Alliant Insurance Services Inc Ascentium Capital LLC CarCareONE by GE Capital ChannelAdvisor China Economic News Service Crazyfish Creative CustomerLink DB Schenker Eagle Business Software ebay Motors experticity Financial Transaction Service First Data Corp FOCUS Business Solutions Inc Design GS3-Global Strategic Supply Solutions The High Ground of Texas I.C.E. To that end, Compu- Systems the SEMA Show s official registration provider strives to make lead gathering, retrieval and management a snap before, during and after the Show. Founded in 1976, CompuSystems processes approximately 1.5 million registrations per year for more than 200 events worldwide while renting lead-recording systems to exhibitors. These systems read 2-D bar and smart codes embedded in the attendee badges created during the registration process. The code reading is performed either through a specialized desktop or handheld device or, increasingly, through a smartphone app now offered by CompuSystems that runs on iphone, ipad and Android platforms. (The app is free, but users pay for an authorization code in order to access the recorded data.) CompuSystems offers exhibitors its BuyerConnect program to access the leads they collect through their retrieval devices. BuyerConnect is something that happens for the most part post-event, explained Paul McCaffray, Compu- Systems executive vice president and COO. It s a system that, once the event is over with, we send an to every exhibitor who participated with one of our lead-retrieval systems, and we essentially give back to them a list of the leads that they took so they can take some action at that point. Continued on page 92 For the exhibitor, lead generation is everything. CompuSystems, the SEMA Show s official registration provider, also makes lead management easy before, during and after the Show. 92 Rev Up Your Online Customer Experience With Logistics Continued from page 91 shopping experience. Commissioned by UPS, the comscore study polled more than 3,100 online shoppers and evaluated consumer perceptions and shopping habits ranging from pre-purchase to delivery and even the returns process. Ultimately, the survey found that the ability to control deliveries and having increased visibility were the most important factors driving today s online shoppers. Following are highlights of top study findings and advice for automotive parts suppliers on strategies to address online customer expectations. Options, Options and More Options One of the keys to success with online shoppers is to provide them with a variety of delivery options to meet their needs. The comscore Online Customer Experience study found that while 67% of shoppers preferred the most economical delivery option, the majority of respondents also desired the option to speed up shipments in urgent scenarios, such as the need for a crucial part. Long delivery lead times also can be a major deterrent for online shoppers. The study found that 80% of online shoppers reported recently abandoning their online shopping carts, and 78% of those respondents cited the specified delivery time or a delivery time of more than five days as their reason for cart abandonment. Lead Management With CompuSystems, Continued from page 91 They can send out a broadcast . They can send out individual s. They can download the list. But really what we re trying to do is remind them of the people who came to their booth, the leads and opportunities to continue the booth experience beyond the last day of the Show. As a complement to that, we send a BuyerConnect to every attendee who had his or her badge scanned by at least one of our systems 92 SEMA Show Daily In order to address online customers preferences for delivery date options, look for shipping partners that offer a number of flexible shipping options, ranging from premium express delivery to more economical options, such as ground delivery. The more shipping options made available to online customers, the more likely they are to follow through with their online purchases. Communication Is Key Similar to providing online shoppers with multiple delivery options, retailers should be aware that shoppers want to know the details regarding their delivery date prior to making an online purchase. Providing online customers with an accurate delivery date from the beginning can further ensure that customer expectations are being met. Additionally, 46% of survey respondents said that receiving a product when expected led them to recommend an online retailer. Online shoppers not only want to know when they will receive a package, but also want to use technology to stay on top of their delivery. Of the online shoppers surveyed, 39% said that receiving an or text delivery alert was the most convenient form of notification. There are a number of tools available to assist online retailers with these customer preferences for increased communication and visibility. These tools range from enabling retailers to place package tracking capabilities directly on their websites to solutions that help to say here are the exhibitors that you visited. For pre-show lead generation, the company also offers a program called TrafficMax. First deployed in 2000, TrafficMax allows exhibitors to go into a self-serve system and essentially mine the Show registration database and visitor profiles gathered by CompuSystems during the registration process. What is their principle business? McCaffray asked. What are their reg- retailers proactively alert customers of their delivery via or text. Put Shoppers in the Driver s Seat In addition to multiple delivery options and visibility into the status of deliveries, online shoppers also desire the ability to control package delivery and timing even after their orders are placed. This is particularly true for customers who cannot always be home when deliveries are scheduled to arrive. The comscore study found that many online shoppers were interested in the ability to reroute a package to another address or want to specify if a package can be left with a neighbor. Services such as UPS My Choice proactively alert consumers about upcoming deliveries and give them the ability to reschedule or re-route packages to meet their specific schedule. Just as Easy in Reverse The online customer experience doesn t end once a package is delivered. Returns (or reverse logistics) are a key part of the customer experience. If a product needs to be returned or shipped back to the retailer, an easy or seamless returns process is an opportunity to improve the online shopping experience and even gain a competitive advantage. The com- Score study found that 62% of online istration categories? Are they a buyer? The exhibitor can go through there and pinpoint the people they want to communicate with [and] can then send a broadcast or download a contact list. TrafficMax enables an exhibitor to take a little more control of their destiny and reach out to the people who are registered and say come to my booth and see me. Of course, getting buyers to come to your SEMA Show booth and see shoppers considered having a return label right in the box to be the ideal returns scenario. The survey also found that easy-to print return labels and automatic refunds were highly desired by most online shoppers. Most importantly, survey respondents reported that a positive returns experience would lead them to shop more often with a retailer and to recommend the retailer to a friend. Online retailers should keep this last step in the online shopping process in mind as they create and manage their shipping and logistics strategies. From the very beginning of the purchasing process all the way to the returns process, logistics plays a significant role in the online customer experience. As automotive parts and accessories continue to move to this growing retail platform, suppliers and retailers should keep online consumer perceptions and expectations top of mind as they design and evolve their logistics process. For additional information on the UPS and comscore Online Customer Experience Study, a whitepaper detailing the findings can be downloaded at comscore-survey.
