THE PATRIOT IPMS Patriot Chapter Newsletter Pip Moss, Editor August 2016 Billerica, MA Meeting Info The next Patriot Chapter meeting will take place on Friday, August 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Billerica, MA. Please note that the meeting has been pushed back a week from the originally scheduled date due to a number of key officers and members being unable to attend. The church is located on Concord Road, just as it meets Route 3A (Boston Road) at the Billerica Town Common. The August meeting will be a build session with a business meeting, Show-and-Tell, and a raffle. John Walker brought no less than three completed models to the July meeting and told me I could choose which one to put on the cover. As you ll see when you look through the Show-and-Tell gallery, all of them are excellent builds as usual; but I had to go with this 1:35 scale T26E1 Super Pershing, partly because John doesn t do too many American subjects, and partly because of that hallacious gun barrel! John used a Hobby Boss kit and built it OOB. Paints are Tamiya acrylic Olive Drab and a mix ov NATO- and flat black. For weathering John used AK Interactive brown wash for green vehicles as well as weathering powders. The reddish air ID panel is a piece of masking tape. The figure was built up from various DML parts and painted with Vallejo acrylics. Markings are for a tank operated by Sgt. Joseph Matira, Company 1, 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division, Dresden, Germany, April In This Issue July Meeting Minutes...2 Show-and-Tell List & Raffle Report...2 Show-and-Tell Gallery...3 Modeling Tip sake cup for mixing epoxy...7 Upcoming Events...7 IPMS/USA Membership Form...7

Minutes from the July Meeting The business meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m., with 12 members present. Patcon Business: The Elks Club in Hudson has 45 rectangular tables available. Dave Schmidt has begun designing table layouts for the hall. There are some questions about using the extra spaces in the hall we did ask for the entire hall. Dave and John Touloupis will investigate. Mike O Keefe announced that the trophies will be ordered very soon, but asked the membership about potential designs for Best-Of trophies and costs. The club is prepared to upgrade these trophies and asked Mike to use his best discretion on selection. Bill Michaels announced that the club had received payment for 13 vendor tables as of the meeting and that we expect there to be 15 to 20 tables available, based on current estimates. There was discussion about additional potential vendors. 14 Trophy packs have been paid for, at least 7 more were promised, and 31 remain to be sold. The Patcon raffle will be scaled back a bit this year to only two rounds, as there are fewer items remaining from collections. The Raffle Committee is asking for contributions of buildable kits for the general raffle. Bill continues to look for Grand Prize items. Other Items: The club annual outing to the Owls Head Museum in Owls Head, Maine, is scheduled for July 16 th, with a rain date of July 23 rd. [The club trip was canceled for this month due to the low number of members intending to partipate. Possibilities for rescheduling will be discussed at an upcoming meeting. Ed.] No further word has been received from the Collins foundation about a display or a make-and-take table. We have 86 kits available for the latter. There was a brief discussion of the recent newspaper article in the Billerica Minutemen. Opinions on the article were favorable. John Toloupis read the Treasurer s report, and the report was accepted by the membership. The business meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m., followed by Showand-Tell and the monthly raffle. Alan Beeber, Secretary Show-and-Tell Frank Moore...1:48 B-26A in progress (Aurora) Bart Navarro...1: Ford Coupe (Revell) 1:24 Ford T-Bird stock car (AMT) John Walker... 1:35 T26E1 Super Pershing (Hobby Boss) 1:35 BT-42 (Tamiya) 1:35 StuG. III Ausf. G (Tamiya) Raffle Report July winners: Kurt Kunze, Dragon 1:35 Sd.Kfz.234/4 Armored Car Alan Beeber, Airfix 1:48 Albion Refueler & Bedford MWD truck combo. We sold $62 in tickets, and the prizes cost us $54, so we made $8, bringing our 2016 year-to-date profit to $52. Special Note: The Patcon Raffle Committee is open for business! You don t have to wait until September to bring in your donations! Bill Michaels, Vice President Special thanks to Karen Lippincott for all the July photos Page 2

Show-and-Tell Gallery John Walker s 1:35 scale BT mm assault gun (Tamiya), built OOB and hand painted with Polly-S (Ghost Gray and Light Green) and Vallejo (Earth Brown) acrylics. The model was weathered with AK Interactive brown wash and powders. The figure came from the kit and was painted with Vallejo acrylics. Markings, also using kit decals, are for Lt. Sippel, Finnish Detached Armor Company, Vyborg, During World War 2, Finland and the Soviet Union engaged in a series of hostile actions that became known as the Continuation War. Finland, a self-declared democracy, was motivated largely by self-preservation and partly by desire for control of East Karelia, which it considered lost Finnish territory. The Soviet Union hoped to annex Finland outright, as had been promised by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939, in which Russia and Germany divided up Eastern Europe into spheres of influence. Finland found itself a co-belligerant with Germany when Operation Bararossa, the invasion of Russia, began in Although Finland withdrew from participation in the operation later in 1941 under intense international pressure, sporadic military engagements continued for the next several years, and 1944 saw a major Soviet offensive against Finland. The Finns military equipment was always inferior to that of the Soviets, and they frequently had to make do with captured or cast-off materiel. As a case in point, the BT-42 was a redesigned Russian BT-7 Model 1937 light tank. The Finns constructed new turrets and armed them with British-made mm howitzers that had been supplied by the British during the Winter War of Eighteen BT-42s were built and pressed into service in 1943, first seeing action against pillboxes at the Svir River. The design worked reasonably well against soft targets, but was completely unsuitable for anti-tank warfare mainly because of the new turret, which, apart from giving the tank a high profile, also added significant weight to the vehicle, stressing the suspension and the engine. The BT-42s were used again during the major Soviet offensive in 1944, deployed in the defence of Vyborg. In one encounter, a Finnish BT-42 hit a Soviet T times, failing even to immobilize the enemy vehicle. Page 3

Show-and-Tell Gallery (continued) Bart Navarro s 1:25 scale 1994 NASCAR Ford Thunderbird (AMT/Ertl), built OOB and finished with Krylon spray paint. Bart used decals from a Slixx sheet. Markings are for No. 98, owned by Cale Yarbrough, sposored by Fingerhut (online automotive retailer), and driven by Derrike Cope and Jeremy Mayfield during the 1994 Winston Cup season. Page 4

Show-and-Tell Gallery (continued) John Walker s 1:35 scale Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G (Tamiya), built OOB and hand painted with Polly-S (Ghost Gray and Light Green) and Vallejo (Earth Brown) acrylics. The model was weathered with AK Interactive brown wash and powders. The figure is from the kit and was painted with Vallejo acrylics. Markings are for Lt. Mauri Sartio, Finnish 1st Platoon, 1st Company, Vyborg, Like the BT-42 displayed on Page 3, the StuG III was a non-native piece of equipment used by the Finns in their conflict against the Soviets during World War 2. The Germans supplied Finland with 30 of these self-propelled assault guns, nicknamed Sturmi, in 1943; Finland purchased 29 more in Far superior to the BT-42s, the StuGs joined them in the unsuccessful defence of Vyborg in June and later supplanted them altogether. The town of Vyborg (Russian Cyrillic: Выборг, Finnish: Viipuri, Swedish: Viborg,) is the administrative center of Vyborgsky District in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the Karelian Isthmus near the head of the Vyborg Bay, 81 miles to the northwest of St. Petersburg and 24 miles south of Russia s border with Finland, where the Saimaa Canal enters the Gulf of Finland. The town lies in the boundary zone between the East Slavic/ Russian and Finnish worlds and has changed hands many times in history, having been ruled by the Novgorod Republic, Sweden, Russia, Finland and the Soviet Union. In Finnish hands at the beginning of World War 2, Vyborg was ceded to the Soviets in 1940 following the Winter War, captured by the Finns in 1941, recaptured by the Soviets in 1944 (although they failed to take the entire region), and formally relinquished by the Finns in the Paris Peace Treaty of Page 5

Show-and-Tell Gallery (concluded) Bart Navarro s 1:24 scale 1934 Ford 3-window coupe (Revell). Bart built it OOB and used craft acrylics for the metal-flake paint job. Page 6

Modeling Tip Thanks to Rick and Karen Lippincott, I have a lot of those little plastic sake cups I ll bet many of you do too. Here s a little trick to make easier to use them when mixing epoxy. I cut out a piece of.020-inch sheet styrene to fit the inside contours of the cup. I cut it oversize, then trim it so it will just fit inside the cup at the widest point the inside diameter. I draw a couple of horizontal lines on it to use as a guide when filling it. When I need to mix some epoxy, I add the resin on one side of the divider and the hardener on the other, at the same time. The lines on the divider make is easy to make sure I have equal volumes on both sides. When I have the amount I want, I simply remove the divider and stir.
