THE PATRIOT IPMS Patriot Chapter Newsletter Pip Moss, Editor December 2016 Billerica, MA Meeting Info The next Patriot Chapter meeting will take place on Friday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Billerica, MA. The church is located on Concord Road, just as it meets Route 3A (Boston Road) at the Billerica Town Common. The December meeting will be our annual holiday party. See Page 2 for details. Pip Moss built this 1:48 scale AU-1 Corsair from the Hasegawa kit. Aftermarket part replacements include a True Details resin cockpit set, Ultracast wheels, and Quickboost cannon barrels/fairings. The kit engine was modified by replacing the post-war distributors with items from a Quickboost set, and the wiring harness was scratchbuilt using copper wire and polyimide tubing. Paint is Model Master enamel Dark Sea Blue for the exterior and Forest Green for the cockpit Interior Green. Decals are from the kit and were surprisingly good considering Hasegawa s mediocre reputation. The final clear coat consists of Tamiya Spray clear gloss and semi-gloss decanted, mixed 2-to-1, and airbrushed. The penultimate version of Vought s Corsair, the AU-1 (renamed from its original designation of F4U-6) was a dedicated ground attack aircraft (hence the A designator) that served in the early 1950s. The model depicts a plane from Marine squadron VMA-323 based in Korea between June 1952 and July In This Issue November Meeting Minutes... 2 Show-and-Tell List, Raffle Report & Wanted Notice... 2 December Meeting Info... 2 Show-and-Tell Gallery... 3 Upcoming Events... 9 IPMS/USA Membership Form... 9

Bill Michaels, Vice-President Wanted I am looking for a Revell 1:96 scale PT-212 kit. This is the old, old, kit of the Higgins 78-ft. PT Boat that was originally released in the late 1950s (and re-released many times since then). I m looking for a builder s kit, so I don t care about the shape of the box, decals, instructions. etc. Contact me at rcboaterbill@gmail.com if you have one to sell. Bill Michaels As mentioned on Page 1, the December meeting on the 4th will be our annual HOLIDAY PARTY. The club will provide pizza, cold cuts and drinks, but everyone is encouraged to bring desserts or other snacks to round out the feast. Show-and-Tell will feature, but won t be restricted to, models built for this year s theme: THE SEXY 60s. Hopefully many of you have been working hard to complete your special group build display items. As mentioned elsewhere, there ll be a special raffle drawing for everyone who brings a theme build model. You won t want to miss our annual YANKEE SWAP. It s a lot of fun, and everybody who participates will end up with a present to take home. To participate in the Swap, you just need to bring a wrapped present to the meeting. Suggested price is $20 or less, but it s really up to you. We ll explain how it all works on Friday evening. Page 2
Show-and-Tell Gallery John Walker s 1:35 Sturmgeschütz III, Ausf. A (DML), one of two similar models he brought to the November meeting. It was built OOB except for the extra tracks added to the front and the two cable on the engine deck. Paints are Tamiya acrylics, weathered with AK Interactive brown wash, pastels, and weathering powders. Decals are from Bison (now called Star). Markings are for the 1st SS-Panzer Brigade, also known as the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler or LSSAH, France, The model depicts Michael Wittmann s first command. It has not been established for certain that he commanded vehicle no. 5, but it is believed that he did. Wittmann, who served as a tank commander from the beginning of World War 2 until his death in 1944, is known for his ambush of elements of the British 7th Armoured Division during the Battle of Villers-Bocage on 13 June While in command of a Tiger I tank, he destroyed up to fourteen tanks and fifteen personnel carriers, along with two anti-tank guns, within the space of fifteen minutes. The news was picked up and disseminated by the Nazi propaganda machine and added to Wittmann s stature in Germany. Page 3
Show-and-Tell Gallery (continued) John Walker s other 1:35 StuG III, Ausf. A (DML), this one depicting a vehicle built on a Panzer III G chassis. John sourced the transmission cover and side escape hatches from spare DML parts. Paints again are Tamiya acrylics, weathered with AK Interactive brown wash, pastels, and weathering powders. Decals are from the kit and Tamiya. Markings are for StuG Abteilung 667, Russia, After the end of the StuG III Ausf. A production run, it was decided to build 20 more. There were, however, no available StuG chassis, so it was decided to use Panzer III G chassis instead. This explains the different transmission cover and the side escape hatches, features found only on this particular StuG version. Reaching combat units in June 1940, too late for the invasion of France, these non-turreted mobile assault guns were assigned to StuG Abts. 666, 667 and 668 with first deployment in Russian during Page 4
Show-and-Tell Gallery (continued) Bill Michaels 1:6 scale Explorer I (Glencoe, ex-itc), built mostly OOB with the addition of the wire antennas. Paints are Tamiya acrylics; there are no decals all the striping at the nose end was masked and painted. Explorer I was America s first space satellite and was launched on January 31, 1958, atop the first Juno booster rocket, following the Soviet launches of Sputniks 1 and 2 the previous year. It achieved orbit and continued to transmit scientific data, including the first detection of the Van Allen radiation belt, until its batteries expired in May It remained in orbit until Jeff Brown s 1:1 scale Nerf Zombiestrike Slingfire (Hasbro) repaint using Krylon, Citadel and craft paints. Jeff has this to say about the project: Inspired by the Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard lasrifle, I gave this Nerf Blaster a new paint job. The warning stripes on the side are fairly common in the Warhammer artwork and add an eye-catching color contrast to the rest of the subject. It s still fully functional, although I did remove some superfluous parts from the inside that served only to make noise. This was my first of two Nerf Blaster repaints. Page 5
Show-and-Tell Gallery (continued) Ken Myers 1:144 scale Bristol Model 175 Britannia 312F (Roden). built mostly OOB with the addition of various antennas and the filling in of three windows not found on the military version. Paints are Rustoleum White, Tamiya Primer Gray, and Alclad Aluminum. Decals are from 26 Decals, a small British company owned and operated by one Ray Charles. Markings are for the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE), located at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, Bristol s Type 175 Britannia was designed in the early 1940s as a medium- to long-range commercial airliner. Had it gone into service in 1950, it would have been the fastest such plane in the world and would have put Great Britain at the forefront of commercial aviation. Unfortunately, continuing problems with its four Bristol Proteus turboprop engines delayed its introduction until 1957, by which time pure jet airliners such as the Boeing 707 had rendered it all but obsolete. Nevertheless, 80 Britannias were completed, of which 50 were sold to BOAC, who operated them until The subject of Ken s model, XX387, started its life flying for BOAC registered as G-AOVM. At some point in the 1960s it was converted to freighter configuration; hence the designation 312F. During the 1980s it was owned by the RAF s A&AEE flight testing facility and presumably employed for cargo transport. It ended its days back in civilian service as 9Q- CHY before being scrapped in Kinshasa, Zaire. Page 6
Show-and-Tell Gallery (continued) John Walker s 1:32 scale (54 mm) figure of General George Washington (Airfix), built mostly OOB with painted paper for the reins. Paints are Vallejo and craft acrylics. John adds, Washington had two horses: this one is Blueskin; the other, a brown horse, was named Nelson. Page 7
Show-and-Tell Gallery (concluded) Above and below, John Walker s two 1:32 scale (54 mm) figures (Imrie Risley) depicting two of the three American regiments that took part in the Battle of Hubbardston (Vermont) on July 7, Above, a member of the Green Mountain Rangers, also known as Seth Warner s Regiment. Below, a member of the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment. Both figures were built mostly OOB (the Green Mountain Ranger received a substitute plastic head with hair fashioned from Apoxie Sculpt); both were painted with Vallejo and craft acrylics. Page 8
