1 The Iron Works By Bill Schwarz, President MARCH, 2017 Ok Boys, I am short on time as of this writing. I am doing my thing for the show and I am wrapping up loose ends as I do every year. The eboard is doing their thing and all looks good. Barring no weather complications we are a go for Mosquitocon 26! Yes 26.! Seems so long ago when we started at Ft. Monmouth! Well hope for another 26!!! The only thing I will ask of the membership is be there on time 7am and get it done for an 8:45 start time. A lot of people wait for our show ; I want all that come to have fun and get their money s worth. A lot of different people kicked in this year too. For the raffle; I don t know how much but I m sure it will be enough! Other than that, LISM is having Replicon a week before us. I hope they do well and we as a club wish them the Best Of Luck!!! I hope the weather holds out! Well That s about it for now, I really am busy at the moment so I will say see you at the meeting, then on to Mosquitocon 26! It was only Christmas a week ago and the election was 2 weeks ago. Pretty soon Mcon 26. Holy Cow 26 shows! I was there from the beginning, when Big Bill gave birth to one of the best Model Shows on the East Coast. I missed 10 shows in the middle but have returned for the last 10, plus two region 2 shows. I was there for Blizzard Con- almost died twice on Rt 79. Got some great deals from the few vendors that showed up that day.that's when the show was in March, we changed that in a hurry. All indications are that this show will be another success. It all depends on club members showing up that day at the PAL in Wayne, and doing their part. 3 THE JUDGES TABLE By Jon Da Silva Hey gang! Please remember that we're going to be having a Nostalgia Night this month (March), and we have a few other months available for sponsorship this year! April is Mosquitocon fallout, so unless someone wants to sponsor we'll just leave that open. I have May, August, September and November free. June will be the Pacific 1942 and July is The British are coming. Perhaps we should have the Chrysler build in May? I'll ask Bill. In other news, the plaques for Mosquitocon are coming along nicely. I should have a sample for the March meeting so everyone can see. I know we normally use blue for the background, but I think a lot of guys are tired of getting the same plaque over and over again, so I switched it up slightly this year. I think the results will be impressive. Please try and sponsor a trophy package if you can! It really goes a long way to help the club. We only have $25 a year in dues and we get multiple parties and catered food all year long. Lastly, I'm wondering if anyone uses the Milwaukee cordless rotary tool for their model building? I have other Milwaukee tools that use the same battery and I'm looking to upgrade from my corded Dremel. It's just not convenient. If anyone has any experience, shoot me an or let me know at the meeting! My best, JON

4 The Contact s View By Mike Pavlo, VP Since this is the last newsletter prior to MosquitoCon, I just wanted to mention a few reminders. There are still plenty of categories available for trophy sponsorship. If you haven t already done so, please consider sponsoring one. It s a great way to give back for all that we receive as members. Also, please feel free to bring quality kit/hobby items to the show for the raffle table. All our attendees love to participate in the raffle, and the more quality items we have, the better. Finally, judges are always needed for the show. If you d like to participate, come to the judges meeting and you ll be pared up with a team of judges in the modeling genre of your choice. As Martin, our head judge for so long always said, it s a great way to learn what the attributes of a winning model are. Don t forget that this meeting is the second annual Nostalgia Night. Last year s was so incredible that I can t wait to see what gems from yesteryear are going be on the tables. Kudos to Mike Terre and Dan Spera for starting what should be a long tradition. Best always, Mike P. Editor s Note: Mike Terre again provides us with a review of one of his recent builds. Perhaps we should call these TERREGRAMS? A fun build of the old Revell AerobeeHi sounding rocket. In support of the "Nostalgia Night" theme for the March club meeting I offer my build of the Revell AerobeeHi (yes, all one word) sounding rocket. This kit, H-1814, was first issued in 1958 and discontinued in It's original selling price was 98 cents. Revell reissued this kit in 1996 under their Selected Subject Program (SSP) and is the subject of my build. This kit was purchased for $3.00 in the closing hour of a way long ago MosquitoCon. I think the price of the reissued version was $7.98. It is comprised of 35 grey and 10 white plastic parts. The parts were well molded, with little flash and are quite detailed for a vintage kit. There were some very heavy mold separation lines, particularly on the

transporter but this was easily fixed with a little sanding. The instruction sheet is pure vintage Revell, very pictorial and very detailed.

The box art by Jack Leynnwood is beautiful and so evocative of the late 1950's.

5 transporter but this was easily fixed with a little sanding. The instruction sheet is pure vintage Revell, very pictorial and very detailed. The sheet also contain encouragement to build and collect other Revell models...remember Revell kits are "Fun to build...fun to collect and display". The box art by Jack Leynnwood is beautiful and so evocative of the late 1950's. In fact it's that box art that caught my eye at that long ago MosquitoCon and caused me to buy the kit. I'm still a sucker for great box art! I decided to build this kit out of the box and other than sanding, would do nothing out of the ordinary. The AerobeeHi rocket went together in about ten minutes, the parts fit being quite good. Other than sanding of the join lines for the rocket body there was no further assembly needed. The tail fins on the real rocket were painted alternately black and silver to aid in tracking, with the main body being silver. In keeping with the "fun build" theme for this model I kept my painting simple. The black tail fins were first sprayed "rattle can" Krylon gloss black and once dry were masked. The entire rocket was then sprayed "rattle can" Krylon gloss silver and allowed to dry overnight. Removing the masks found no bleed through and a hard, overall gloss finish just waiting for decals.

6 The decals are well printed and I had no problems with them but boy were they thick and I mean thick. I tried all the usual setting solutions to little effect. Remembering a conversation I had with Marc Rocca concerning thick decals on his superb build of the old Revell Constellation airliner I simply sprayed the devil out of the AerobeeHi with "rattle can" Krylon clear gloss. It helped and I was happy with the results, you could still see a little raised decal film but remember this is a fun build of a vintage kit. Well the AerobeeHi was done and it was now onto the transporter. The transporter comprised most of the parts in the kit and took the most time to build. There were heavy mold separation lines on the transporter frames but were easily removed by a little sanding and scraping. The frames had some warpage but dry fitting found that they would straighten out during final assembly. Typical of vintage Revell there were some moving parts, in this case the launcher frame could be moved to elevate the AerobeeHi and this is the way I built it. Again the parts fit was excellent with the transporter being completed in six hours and ready for paint. Since the transporter was yellow I noted that I had a couple of different shades of yellow Polly Scale paints in mostly empty jars. In keeping with the fun theme I mixed these yellows together, airbrushed the transporter and much to my surprise it worked. I then highlighted the transporter with some black pastel and Rub-in-Buff silver and it was complete. Oh, I used a relatively new Tamiya paint color for the transporter tires, it's Tamiya XF-85 Black Rubber and it gave very convincing results, think this will be my "go to" paint for modern tires. The AerobeeHi was then snapped into the transporter elevation frame and that was that. But wait there's more! The kit also had three figures, two in exposure suits and one in ordinary work clothes. They even had small bases that you glued to the feet of the figure. Could these be the mythical "rocket scientists" or "steely eyed missile men" of the 1950's? One could only wonder. I'm not a figure painter but looking at the simplicity of these guys I gave it a shot. The two guys in the exposure suits were easy, just a little Tamiya XF-15 flesh for the face, XF-16 aluminum for the suit and XF-68 brown for the gloves. A little brown pastel was used to highlight facial features and that was ALMOST that. I noticed that the exposure suits has clear face plates but these were not included in the kit. I guess that was a little too much to ask for a 1950's kit. And here is where I deviated from the "out of the box" build. I cut small pieces of clear sheet plastic, formed them into the faceplates and using clear plastic cement secured them to the figures. The other figure in working clothes was painted Tamiya XF-23 light blue for the shirt, Tamiya XF-8 blue for the pants, XF-15 flesh for the arms and face, XF-10 brown for the boots and XF-1 black for the hair. Again a little brown pastel was used to bring out the facial features and my big adventure in figure painting was complete. Oh, the figure bases were painted Tamiya XF-5 green, I mean what other color would you use for a vintage kit build? By the way, how you figure painters do what you do is beyond me!

Other then the clear plastic exposure suit faceplates this was completely out of the box. This was a fun, no stress, weekend build and I would strongly recommend similar builds to all readers.

It's just nice to take a model out of the "stash", blow off the dust and build it like we did when we were kids. Now, having said that, go down to your stash, find a vintage kit that's been begging to be built and build it...you won't be disappointed. I have learned so much about what the final model needs to look like from serving as a judge in a category with which I am familiar, but do not have a model entered.
