1 AIR INTAKES 1. DESCRIPTION This section describes that portion of the power plant which directs mass air flow to the engine. Induction air enters the engine through a filter mounted on the right, aft side of the engine baffling and then flows into the induction duct assembly mounted on the center aft end of the engine. The induction duct assembly employs a flapper valve which, in the case of filter blockage, or induction ice, allows alternate air to enter the induction duct body via a flexible duct open to the sheltered, warm side of the engine baffle. The alternate air valve is manually controlled from the cabin by pulling a control knob mounted on the left side of the center console. From the induction duct body, induction air flows to the throttle body after which the air is distributed to each cylinder via the intake manifold and separate intake tubes. Page 1 15 Jun 2010
2 2. MAINTENANCE PRACTICES A. Induction Air Filter (See Figure 1) (1) Removal - Induction Air Filter (a) Remove engine cowling. (Refer to 71-10) (b) Serials 1148 & subs: Remove bolt and washer securing filter bracket to baffle. (c) Remove cotter pin, nut, washer, and cover plate securing filter to induction duct assembly. (d) Remove filter from airplane. (2) Installation - Induction Air Filter (a) Position filter to induction duct assembly and secure with cover plate, washer, nut, and cotter pin. (b) Serials 1148 & subs: Install bolt and washer securing filter bracket to baffle. (c) Install engine cowling. (Refer to 71-10) Page 2 15 Jun 2010
3 B. Alternate Air Control Cable (See Figure 1) (1) Removal - Alternate Air Control Cable (a) Remove engine cowling. (Refer to 71-10) (b) Remove cotter pin, nut, washers, and bolt securing cable to flapper valve control arm. (c) Remove nut, support clamp, and bolt securing cable to engine baffling. (d) Remove any clamps securing alternate air cable to engine mount. (e) Remove nut and washer securing alternate air control knob and cable to console mounting bracket. Note: Prior to removal, note routing of cable through firewall and console ribs for aid on reinstallation and remove as much sealant as possible surrounding cable fitting on firewall. (f) Gently pull cable aft, through firewall, ensuring that the cable does not inadvertently pull other components loose, and remove from airplane. (2) Installation - Alternate Air Control Cable (a) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose High Temperature Silicone Adhesive RTV 736 Dow Corning Sealant. Fiber Frax 970J,TON UniFrax Firewall insulation. (b) Ensure cable fitting on firewall is clear and free of old sealant. (c) Route cable through mounting bracket, firewall, and engine baffling, to flapper valve control arm. (d) Install washer and nut securing alternate air control knob to console mounting bracket. (e) Install bolt, washers, nut, and cotter pin securing cable to flapper valve control arm. (f) Wrap FiberFrax paper around portion of control cable which will pass through firewall fitting so a tight fit is achieved at the cable/firewall interface. (g) Remove alternate air hose connected to induction duct to gain visibility to flapper valve. (h) Install support clamp, bolt, and nut securing control cable to engine baffling so that with the cable control knob pushed in, the flapper valve fully closes. (i) Apply silicone adhesive to entire firewall fitting and fitting/cable interface. (j) Install engine cowling. (Refer to 71-10) Page 3 15 Jun 2010
4 C. Induction Duct Assembly (See Figure 1) (1) Removal - Induction Duct Assembly (a) Remove induction air filter. (Refer to ) (b) Remove cotter pin, nut, washers, and bolt securing induction air cable to hinge assembly. (c) Remove clamp securing alternate air duct to induction duct assembly. (d) Loosen clamps securing induction duct assembly to throttle body. Remove induction duct assembly from airplane. (2) Disassembly - Induction Duct Assembly (a) Remove nuts and screws securing flapper to hinge assembly and remove flapper. (b) Remove bushings, washers, nut, and cotter pin securing hinge assembly to induction duct assembly. (c) Remove filter rod and cotter pins securing air filter eyebolt to induction duct assembly. (3) Assembly- Induction Duct Assembly (a) Position air filter eyebolt to induction duct assembly and secure with filter rod and cotter pins. (b) Lightly hand-tighten bushings, washers, and nut securing hinge assembly to induction duct assembly. (c) Perform Inspection/Check - Flapper Assembly. (Refer to ) (4) Installation - Induction Duct Assembly (a) Position induction duct assembly to throttle body. Tighten clamps securing induction duct assembly to throttle body. (b) Install clamp securing alternate air duct to induction duct assembly. (c) Position induction air cable to hinge assembly and secure with bolt, washers, nut and cotter pin. (d) Install induction air filter. (Refer to ) (5) Inspection/Check - Flapper Assembly (a) Verify that during rotation of flapper, gasket contacts all edges of induction duct assembly at both stop points. Note: Gasket should have some deflection but not so much that it folds under and causes resistance when flapper is moved away from fully closed position. (b) (c) Verify that no excess deflection of flapper gasket occurs. If excess deflection occurs: 1 Perform Disassembly - Induction Duct Assembly. (Refer to ) Note: When trimming gasket, keep smooth surface on trimmed edges free of any loose fibers. (d) 2 Trim gasket on flapper assembly with sharp scissors. 3 Perform Assembly - Induction Duct Assembly. (Refer to ) Once proper fit is obtained, torque nut to in-lb ( Nm) and install cotter pin.
