2 INTRODUCTION OPERATING PRIIPLE The FC/FD series of mini float switches operate based upon two scientific principles, buoyancy and magnetism. The float portion of the mini float switch is designed for a specific minimum fluid density, specific gravity, based upon the volume and weight of the float element. The float contains a magnet and the stationary stem incorporates a reed switch which opens or closes its electrical contact when tthe magnetic element in the float comes in proximity with the reed switch within the stem. Refer to Figure. The FC/FD series of float switches are very compact, size depending upon the specific style or configuration. As such they are easily installed on small machinery and in areas where very little space is available inside/outside the vessel in which they are installed. closed open N S magnet Figure (horizontal float orientation) FEATURES Compact, affordable and simple design for liquid level detection Wide range of installation options Variety of process connections Multiple materials of construction available Liquid level detection in marine, food/beverage machinery, hydraulic, chemical and a variety of other industries APPLICATIONS The use of the FC/FD mini float level switches can be in a wide range of applications including: Chemicals Beverages Food ingredients Water Many others Considerations for use of these mini float level switches must include the float shape/size, fluid specific gravity, fluid compatibility with the wetted materials of construction as well as the electrical connection with the reed switch output from the FC/FD unit. The FC/FD level switch s float should always be capable of being used with a fluid specific gravity that is lower than the specific gravity of the actual fluid in the application (S.G. float < S.G. target fluid) so that the float will rise when the target fluid level rises due to the buoyancy of the float. This upward movement of the float will cause the reed switch circuit to open/close. S N Ring Magnet S N Because the float reed switch is activated by the magnetic element contained within the float, ensure the target fluid does not contain any iron traces or particulate or that of any other element that might create magnetic interference. 5 REED SWITCH PROTECTION INDUCTIVE LOADS An inductive load is the portion of an electrical circuit that uses magnetic energy. Example inductive loads include electric motors, relay coils, transformers or solenoids. These, and other devices using magnetic energy, are classified as inductive. This has to do with how they absorb and process energy. Inductive loads tend to be large and usually depend on a coil to store and route energy. As a consequence most inductive loads are found in industrial apparatus and heavy-duty appliances. When used to switch inductive loads the reed switch used in the FC/FD mini float level switch requires protection to keep the energy flowing in only one direction since the force of the power can cause damage to the FC/FD reed switch. Therefore the use of a circuit protector such as RC snubbers, Varistors or Clamping Diodes is recoended. Refer to Figure 4a, 4b and 4c. Do not directly connect an electric motor, solenoid or magnetic switch to the FC/FD unit reed switch. 2 C= I (µf) R= E E I( + ) CAPACITIVE LOADS A capacitive load are those loads in which the capacitive reactance exceeds the inductive reactance, meaning the load draws a leading current. Capacitive loads include capacitors, incandescent lamps or the use of long cables where the contact points are subjected to electrical surges. When connecting the reed switch to a capacitive load, a protective circuit such as a surge suppressor or current limiting resistor is recoended.
