2 Related Publications Listed below are related manuals and their publication numbers. Copies of these publications can be ordered by contacting the ADC Technical Assistance Center at (in U.S.A. or Canada) or , extension 3475 (outside U.S.A. and Canada). Title DS Plug-In Digital Signal Cross-Connect (PIX-DSX-) System User Manual ADCP Number ADCP Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided.. GENERAL.0 The PIX DSX- 9-Inch (48.3 cm) Shelf is available in heights of 4.5 or 5.0 inches (.43 or 2.7 cm). The shelf can accommodate seven PIX-DSX- housings or six PIX- DS housings and a power module assembly. The PIX-DSX- Bay can accommodate up to thirteen 4.5 inch (.43 cm) shelves or twelve 5.0 inch (2.7 cm) shelves. The 4.5 inch (.43 cm) shelf is equipped with 0.5 inch (.27 cm) cross-connect jumper trough. The 5.0 inch (2.7 cm) shelf is equipped with a.0 inch (2.54 cm) cross-connect jumper trough. Each shelf is equipped with two vertical designation strips. 2. INSTALLATION Warning: Never install telephone equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. When installing or modifying telephone lines, disconnect lines at the network interface before working with uninsulated lines or terminals to prevent electrical shock. 2.0 This section provides installation procedures for PIX-DSX- Shelves equipped with PIX-DSX- or PIX-DS housings. Page 2

3 A. Unpacking and Inspection 2.02 The components of the PIX-DSX- shelf are packaged separately for protection during shipping. Remove all items from their shipping containers. Verify that all parts on the packing slip have been received before discarding the shipping containers. If there are any damaged or missing parts file a claim with the commercial carrier and notify ADC. B. Shelf Installation 2.03 The PIX-DSX- 9-inch (48.3 cm) Shelf and vertical cable rings (attached to each side flange) mount in a PIX-DSX- Bay. See Figure. SIDE FLANGE VERTICAL CABLE RINGS 9-INCH (48.3 CM) SHELF 9599-A Figure. 9-Inch (48.3 cm) PIX-DSX- Shelf 2.04 When installing PIX-DSX- Shelves in a raised floor or water-fall environment, add the shelves in the bay in a top to bottom order. When using a solid floor environment (non-waterfall), work from the bottom to top order. Install each PIX-DSX- Shelf as follows:. Determine the new shelf position in the bay. 2. Loosely, secure the shelf in place with screws through the upper and lower mounting holes of the shelf. Do not tighten the screws at this time. 3. Slide an outside vertical cable ring under the mounting screws on each side flange. 4. Tighten the mounting screws. Page 3

4 C. Housing Installation Danger: To avoid the possibility of severe and potentially fatal electric shock, use extreme care when working at the back of the PIX-DSX- Shelf with the power terminations. PIX-DSX- Housings 2.05 The PIX-DSX- 9-inch Shelf can accommodate seven PIX-DSX- housings. The PIX-DSX- housing can accommodate up to eight PIX-DSX- cross-connect circuit cards. The housing may be inserted into the shelf with or without the circuit cards installed in the housing. ADC recommends that the cards be installed in the housing prior to making backplane connections Each PIX-DSX- housing is shipped with the power and ground multiple wire wrap terminals designated V ( 48 Vdc), LG (Lamp Ground) and SG (Sleeve Ground) connected together as shown in Figure 2. Circuit cards are designated through 56 (left to right, as viewed from the front of the shelf). Connect the power and ground terminals at the back of the housings on each shelf as follows:. Connect a 22 AWG wire, 2 feet (6cm) in length, from the SG wire wrap pin on housing, circuit card position, to the CH GND (chassis ground) terminal at the back of the shelf. 2. Connect the CH GND terminal at the back of the shelf to the office ground. 3. 11 PIX-DSX- and PIX-DS Housing Network Element Connections Caution: Do not trim the length of the network element cable leads to less than 2 or more than 5 inches (30.5 to 38. cm) for later removal of the housings from the bay and for future cable termination changes. Excessive cable lengths create difficulty in cable storage. 2.0 Terminate the input and output of each DS network element signal to one column of unused wire wrap pins (Ri, Ti, Ro and To) as follows:. Connect the DS signal coming from the network element to the To and Ro pins and the DS signal going to the network element the Ti and Ri pins. Record each connection for future reference. 2. Repeat step for each network element equipment connection. Note: The terminations are typically identified by bay, shelf, and circuit card. Shelves are numbered through 2 or through 3 (top to bottom in a raised floor or water-fall environment or bottom to top in a solid floor environment). Circuit cards are designated through 64 (left to right as viewed from front) in each shelf (e.g., termination is at bay 4, shelf 7, and circuit card 3). Connect the Slack-Loop Bracket 2. Mount the slack loop bracket on the back of the housing. Use the four screws provided with the bracket. See Figure 9. Working from the front of the shelf, rotate each housing in a clockwise direction and wrap all the housing wires snugly around the slack-loop bracket. Make sure to allow sufficient slack so that the housing can be moved approximately two to three inches (5. to 7.6 cm) from the shelf. With the ADC logo facing up, guide the and its wires into the corresponding slot in the shelf. Press the housing into the shelf until it snaps into position A Figure 9.
