4 l Rack options HP Seismic Rack Additional documentation for the HP Seismic Rack can be found on the HP website ( HP Seismic Rack Casters The seismic rack casters are designed for short-distance moves over smooth, hard surfaces or short-pile carpeting. Carrier-grade racks do not support the use of an unloading ramp. Retrieve the appropriate caster (left or right) from the kit. o Install the right casters on the right side of the rack when facing the front of the rack. Rack options 5

6 o Install the left casters on the left side of the rack when facing the front of the rack. 2. Place the backing plate inside the rack with the nuts facing the interior of the rack. The alignment pins protrude from the hole you used to access the screws that mounted the rack to the pallet, and the backing plate is snug against the sheet metal. 3. From the outside of the rack, position the mounting plate so that the holes closest to the edge are: o o Toward the right side of the rack for the right casters. Toward the left side of the rack for the left casters. 4. Place the mounting plate against the rack so the mounting screw holes line up in the center of the plates and the alignment pins insert into the holes that are off center. 5. Position the caster support against the mounting plate. 6. Install and tighten the two mounting screws. 7. Slide the caster assembly threaded block into the caster support opening. 8. Align the holes, and then insert the two caster support bolts. 9. Install and tighten the two hex nuts onto the caster support bolts. Rack options 6

7 WARNING: Do not raise the rack more than necessary. Have someone watch as you raise the rack and warn you if there is any excessive motion or tipping. 10. Repeat the installation steps to install the remaining casters. 11. Using a wrench, raise the rack by turning the caster jack screws clockwise, a little at a time, until the rack is high enough to slide the pallet out from under the rack. IMPORTANT: Do not turn the jack screw on one caster more than four turns clockwise. Turn the jack screw on all casters the same number of turns to extend the casters by the same amount. Continue turning the jack screws until you reach the appropriate height. 12. Slide the pallet out from underneath the rack and set aside. 13. Lower the rack by turning the caster jack screws counterclockwise until the rack is as close to the floor as possible but still high enough to clear any obstacles in the path to its final position. Moving the seismic rack WARNING: To prevent personal injury and damage to the rack: Have at least two people move the rack on a level floor. If the floor is uneven, use at least four people. When pushing the rack, push on the rack frame only. Do not push or pull on the doors. Do not push on the sides of the rack. Push from the front or rear of the rack only. Verify that the area where you intend to install the rack and the path to the area are clean and that the floor surface is smooth. To move the seismic rack: 1. Verify that the eight leveling feet are set to the maximum height. The leveling feet are shipped from the factory in the fully raised position but can be adjusted using a 5/16-inch Allen wrench. 2. Roll the rack into position according to the floor plan drawings. For more information, see the documentation that ships with the rack. 3. Using an adjustable wrench, lower the rack by turning the caster jack screws counterclockwise until the rack rests on the floor. Removing the casters 1. Using a wrench, lower the rack by turning the caster jack screws counterclockwise. 2. Remove the mounting bolts. 3. Remove the caster support and the mounting plate. 4. Remove the backing plate from behind the rack frame. Push on the mounting plate through the hole at the front of the frame to dislodge the backing plate, if necessary. HP BLc7000 Enclosure Seismic Kit Install the components of the HP BLc7000 Enclosure Seismic Kit in the following order: 1. Install the rack mount bracket ("Installing the rack mount bracket" on page 8). 2. Install the cable management system ("Installing the cable management system" on page 9). 3. Install the enclosure into the rack ("Installing an HP BladeSystem c-class enclosure" on page 10). Rack options 7

When installing multiple enclosures into the rack, use the U locations in parentheses for the top enclosure. 1. Use a Torx screwdriver to screw the rack mount brackets into the top and middle holes of U1 and U2 (U12 and U13). Rack options 8

9 2. Install one cage nut into the top hole of U4 and the middle hole of U9 (U15 and U20) in the front mounting rails. Installing the cable management system NOTE: The U locations are noted in the following procedure for enclosures installed in the lower portion of the rack. When installing multiple enclosures into the rack, use the U locations in parentheses for the top enclosure. 1. Install one cage nut into the bottom holes of U5 or U9 (U16 and U20) in the rear mounting rails. Rack options 9

10 2. Attach the cable management system to each rear rail, making sure to attach it to the cage nut. Installing an HP BladeSystem c-class enclosure The most current documentation for HP BladeSystem components is available at the HP website ( Documentation is also available in the following locations: Documentation CD that ships with the enclosure HP Business Support Center website ( HP Technical Documentation website ( Installing the seismic brace NOTE: The U locations are noted in the following procedure for enclosures installed in the lower portion of the rack. When installing multiple enclosures into the rack, use the U locations in parentheses for the top enclosure. 1. Install two cage nuts into the top and middle holes of U21 (U10) in the rear mounting rails. 2. Install cage nuts into the center hole of U22 (U11) in the front and rear mounting rails. Rack options 10

11 3. From the front, slide the top brace on top of the enclosure. 4. Secure the rear brace to the top brace using the provided screws. The longer flange of the rear brace must be located on the bottom. 5. From the rear, insert the two rear brackets between the enclosure and the rack. The top tab rests on the top brace. 6. Insert the top front brackets into the slots in the front of the enclosure. 7. Secure the brackets to the top brace, using the provided screws. HP BladeSystem Cable Management Tray The HP BladeSystem Cable Management Tray enables you to pass cables from the front of the enclosure through the tray to the back of the rack. If you do not install the cable management tray, you must still reserve 2U of space for the cable management tray before installing the second enclosure. Rack options 11

On each side of the rack, align the center holes in the rack with the two center holes on the rail bracket. o For the lower tray installation, use 12U and 13U. o For the upper tray installation, use 25U and 26U. 2. Secure the rail bracket to the rack with the screws provided. 3. Align the cable management tray with the end of the rail brackets. 4. Slide the tray into the brackets until it reaches the back of the rack. TIP: If you have any difficulty sliding the cable management tray into the rail brackets, loosen the screws that hold the rail bracket to the rack while sliding the tray in. Tighten the screws when the tray is in place. 5. Use the screws provided to secure the cable management tray to the rack. Rack options 12

13 Routing cables through the cable management tray When routing cables through the cable management tray route the cables from the hub to the back of the cable management tray, and then through to the front of the rack. Securing cables CAUTION: To prevent accidental kinks, snags, or overbending, dress and secure all cables. CAUTION: Do not use cable ties or wire ties on fiber cables. Use hook-and-loop straps to keep spooled cable in place. The enclosure has four cable guides on each side of the switch bays. Each bay has its own cable guide and can hold the following types of cables: Ten fiber optic cables Four SAS cables Eight Ethernet cables To secure cables from each bay in a cable guide: 1. Loosen the screw, and then remove each guide. Rack options 13

14 2. Install a wire tie for copper wire or a hook-and-loop strap for fiber cable. Ties or fasteners cannot exceed 1.3 cm (0.5 in) wide or 12.7 cm (5.0 in) long. 3. Secure each guide to the cable management system frame. Rack options 14

15 You can also use hook-and-loop straps to fasten cables to the rack. To secure cables to the cable management tray, attach the cables to the slots on the cable management tray with a hook-and-loop strap. HP BladeSystem Breaker Panel NOTE: The breaker panel contains no serviceable internal parts. To install the breaker panel: 1. Install the sheet metal grommet ("Installing the sheet metal grommet" on page 16). 2. Install the breaker panel brackets ("Installing the breaker panel brackets" on page 16). 3. Install the breaker panel into the rack ("Installing the breaker panel into the rack" on page 17). 4. Connect cables to the breaker panel. 16 Required tools The following tools are required for installation: Phillips screwdriver Flathead screwdriver 1mm wrench T-25 Torx driver T-20 Torx driver 14mm socket wrench Installing the sheet metal grommet The sheet metal grommet protects the cables that run through the opening on the top of the rack. To install the sheet metal grommet: 1. From the rear of the rack, unscrew the two top plate nuts, and then remove the rack top. 2. Discard the plate and nuts. 3. Align and center each grommet to the rack frame edge, and then push the grommet onto the edge of the sheet metal. Installing the breaker panel brackets There are three sets of breaker panel brackets: Front mounting locking brackets Installed on the front of the breaker panel Rack support brackets Installed on each side of the breaker panel Slider rail brackets Installed on each side of the rack To install the breaker panel brackets: 1. Using the M4 screws provided, install the front mounting locking brackets by attaching the two front mounting locking brackets to the front of the breaker panel. 2. Using the remaining screws, install the rack support brackets by attaching the two rack support brackets to each side of the breaker panel. 3. Install the slider rail brackets. a. Install the four cage nuts into the front mounting rails of the rack, two per side in the lower U space allocated for the breaker panel. b. Install cage nuts into the top and bottom holes of that U. c. Place the slider rail brackets in the lower U space allocated for the breaker panel in the rack. d. Verify that the single threaded hole is positioned to the front of the rack. The two cage nuts are for the front locking brackets on the front of the breaker panel. e. Using the M5 screws provided, secure the front hole of the slider rail bracket. f. Secure the rear of each slider rail bracket to the rear rack mounting rails. Rack options 16

17 Installing the breaker panel into the rack 1. Align the rack support brackets on the breaker panel with the rail brackets, and slide the breaker panel into the rack. 2. Secure the breaker panel with the screws provided. Power cable connections for the breaker panel WARNING: Only a certified electrician must connect power to the breaker panel. Before removing the breaker panel rear cover, make sure that the power from the site into the breaker panel is off, and switch all breakers in the front of the breaker panel off. The breaker panels are installed from the top down, and the enclosures are installed from the bottom up. In this configuration, the power cables are routed from the top breaker to the bottom enclosure and from the bottom breaker to the top enclosure. For connections up to 80A, use breakers 1-3. For connections up to 50A, use breakers 4-7. Each module connecting to the breaker panel has a dedicated connection on Side A and Side B. Each module connects to the same terminal number on each side. Verify that the breaker installed in the front of the breaker is the correct amp size. Installing Breaker Panel Output Power Cables Lugs that connect to the breaker panel output terminals must be right angle lugs. For the 80A terminals, use a two-hole 1/4-inch inch lug. For the 50A terminals, use a single-hole #10 lug. To install the breaker panel output power cables: 1. Remove the breaker panel rear cover. 2. For terminals 1-3, remove the Keps nuts on the terminals to be used. 3. For terminals 4-7, remove the nuts and lock washers on the terminals to be used. 4. Connect a module red source wire to the -48V/-60V terminal posts. Connect a module black return wire to the RTN terminal posts. 5. For terminals 1-3, install lugs with the wires on top. 6. For terminals 4-7, install lugs with the wires on the bottom. Rack options 17

18 7. Install the nuts and washers over the lugs. 8. Install the breaker panel rear cover. Installing breaker panel site input power cables WARNING: A qualified electrician must determine the cabling requirements for the input power of the breaker panel. You must verify that the correct size cables are installed into side A and side B of the breaker panel. WARNING: You must disconnect the input cables from the site power or battery before connecting the breaker panel input cables. Do not reconnect the input cables to the site power or battery until all install procedures on the breaker panel and its ground strap are completed. Connection at the site power or battery must be the last connection made in the installation procedure or any servicing procedure. Site input cables can vary in size based on the rack configuration, power load, cable distance to the site battery, cable routing through overhead troughs, and other factors. Determine cable gauge size for each configuration, according to site local electrical codes. The breaker panel can accommodate up to 500 kcmil. Input lugs must have two-hole 3/8 inch 1 inch spacing. To install the breaker panel site input power cables: 1. To access the breaker panel main input studs and nuts, slide the breaker panel back. 2. From the rear, remove the rear covers from the breaker panel. 3. With the flathead screwdriver, remove the rear ID panel from the rack. The site power cables run behind it. 4. With the T-30 screwdriver and 1-mm wrench, remove the ground strap connection hardware. 5. From the front, using a T-25 screwdriver, remove the screws that secure the breaker panel to the front cage nuts. 6. Slide the panel forward approximately three inches beyond the rack rails, and then with a T-20 screwdriver, remove both front mounting brackets. 7. From the rear, pull the panel back enough to remove the stud nuts with the 14 mm socket wrench, if necessary. When the breaker is installed in the top U of the rack, the socket wrench has access to the top lugs without sliding the breaker panel back. When another module is installed beneath the breaker panel, slide the panel out the rear to enable access to the bottom input lugs. 8. Run the site input power cables into the rack rear through the center hole on the top where the sheet metal grommets are installed. Rack options 18

19 9. Connect the site input power cables to the input busbar studs. a. Connect the -48V/-60V red wire to the top busbar on each Side (A & B). b. Connect the RTN black wires to the bottom busbar on each Side (A & B). c. Use the 14mm socket wrench to reinstall the nuts over the lugs. 10. From the front, pull the breaker panel forward, reattach the front mounting brackets, and then secure the breaker panel to the front cage nuts. 11. From the rear, reconnect the ground strap with the ground strap M6 connection hardware, and then reattach the rack identification panel, routing the site input power cables behind it. 12. Reinstall the breaker panel rear cover. Connecting the breaker panel to the power supplies The HP BladeSystem Breaker Panel contains six red source -48 DC volt cables and six black return cables. The ends of each cable are labeled with the location, which describe where to connect the cable to the breaker panel and to the DC input module. Each of these connections is a pair of wires, one for -48V DC and one for return. For more information, see the documentation that ships with the rack. To connect cables to the breaker panel: 1. Referring to the DC cable connection configuration table, connect a red source -48 DC volt cable to the left side of the A1 position with a 90 lug. Rack options 20

21 2. Referring to the DC cable connection configuration table, connect a black return cable to the right side of the A1 position with a 90 lug. To connect cables from the breaker panel to the DC input module: 1. Referring to the DC cable connection configuration table, connect the red source cable from the breaker panel to the top portion of the DC input module at a 45 angle with a 45 lug. 2. Referring to the DC cable connection configuration table, connect the black return cable from the breaker panel to the bottom portion of the DC input module at a 45 angle with a 45 lug. 3. Connect the remaining cables according to the DC cable connection configuration table. 4. Fasten the cables to the side of the rack with Velcro hook-and-loop fasteners. Rack options 21

Remove the breaker panel rear cover to expose the grounding studs common to the breaker panel. 2. Remove the nuts from the studs. 3. Install the grounding cable onto the studs, and tighten the nuts over the lug. 4. Route the grounding cable, and connect the single-hole lug of the grounding cable to the ground rail. 5. Install a star lock washer between the ground rail and the lug using an M6x16mm, self-threading screw. Servicing an individual breaker The individual breakers can be serviced with telecom equipment connected to the rear output terminals. CAUTION: For safety purposes, a breaker must be switched off when removed or inserted. 1. Switch the breaker off. 2. Remove the breaker. a. Unscrew the two breaker screws with a Phillips screwdriver. b. Pull the breaker bracket to pull the breaker out of the panel. 3. Switch the new breaker off before inserting it into the panel. 4. Install the new breaker with the breaker handle to the right and the OFF position toward the bottom. Rack options 22

23 5. Reinstall the two breaker screws. 6. Switch the breaker on. Breaker panel safety cover A safety cover is included with the breaker panel. The cover consists of a top cover and a bottom cover. Both covers can be removed with the breaker panel installed. Each cover is secured with three screws. To access the output connections, only remove the bottom cover. To access the input connections, remove both the top and bottom covers. Rack options 23

HP Seismic Rack Mounting Kit for the MSA2324 CG The HP Seismic Rack Mounting Kit for the MSA2324 CG supports installation of the HP StorageWorks MSA2324 Carrier-Grade Storage Array in the HP Seismic Rack. 27 Washer Bracket assembly screws (12) Installing the Seismic Rack Mounting Kit 1. Attach the rear brackets to the MSA2324 Carrier-Grade CG 2. Attach the left bracket assembly to the left rack rail. 3. Attach the right bracket assembly to the left right rail. 4. Insert cage nuts into the rack holes. 5. Align the MSA2324 CG with the rails, and then slide it into the rack until the ears of the MSA2324 CG are about 1 to 2 inches from the rack front rails. 6. Attach a flat washer between the right mounting ear (bottom hole) and the rack, and then loosely attach the bracket to the rear bracket assemblies. Enclosure options 27

28 7. Attach the single-hole ground cable lug between the front right mounting ear (top hole) and the rack with a lock washer and screw. Attach the loose end of the ground cable to the front rack ground rail. 10.
