INSTALLATION 2.01 This section describes how to install the Fiber Splice Panel. The installation procedure consists of the following individual steps: x x x x x Fanning Clip Installation Fiber Splice Panel Installation Outside Plant Cable Installation Service Loop and Splicing Final Check A. Fanning Clip Installation 2.02 The Fiber Splice Panel can be installed in any available panel space in the rack or cabinet. It is suggested however, that the configuration be carefully planned before mounting the Fiber Splice Panel or any other panels. All panels should be mounted at the same time. To facilitate installation, start at the bottom of the rack and work upward Two fanning clips, mounting brackets (Figure 5), and attaching hardware are supplied. The fanning clips or mounting brackets attach to the front side of the rack and serve as an attachment point for the chassis. The fanning clips also provide a means of organizing patch cords. The fanning clips include bend radius limiters for patch cord protection and can be used on 19- or 23-inch racks as well as 23-inch cabinets. The mounting brackets must be used in place of the fanning clips if mounting the Fiber Splice Panel in a 19-inch cabinet. Either mounting method accommodates EIA or WECO spacing. The Fiber Splice Panel is an 8.75 inch high panel (5 rack spaces). The fanning clips or mounting brackets must be installed with this spacing which permits stacking of additional panels. Page 9

10 2.04 If mounting the Fiber Splice Panel in a cabinet, certain cabinet adjustments must be performed. Since cabinet designs vary, the information presented here is general in nature. 1. The vertical mounting members in the cabinet are normally adjustable front to back. The chassis extends 5 inches (127 mm) in front of the vertical mounting member. Adjust this member to accommodate the chassis extension in front of the rack. 2. The vertical mounting members in the cabinet are normally attached to horizontal members that run from the front to the back of the cabinet. If these members extend past the vertical mounting member, the fanning clips cannot be installed at this junction in 19-inch cabinets because of the overhang of the fanning clip. The mounting brackets must be used in place of the fanning clip in 19-inch cabinets Use the following procedure to attach the fanning clips or mounting brackets to the rack or cabinet. 1. Position one fanning clip or mounting bracket in the predetermined position at the left or right side of the rack or cabinet. 2. Using the appropriate mounting holes for 19- or 23-inch rack, and EIA or WECO spacing, secure the fanning clip or mounting bracket to the rack using the #12-24 screws and #12 washers supplied (Figure 7). 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to attach the other fanning clip or mounting bracket to the right side of the rack or cabinet. 11 B. Fiber Splice Panel Installation 2.06 The chassis has four mounting tabs, two at each side of the chassis. These tabs attach to the previously installed fanning clips or mounting brackets (Figure 7). Install the Fiber Splice Panel using the following procedure. 1. Position the Fiber Splice Panel into the rack so the slots in the mounting tabs are aligned with the tapped holes in the fanning clips or mounting brackets. 2. Secure the Fiber Splice Panel to the fanning clips or mounting brackets with four #12-24 screws and #12 washers supplied. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 if additional panels are being installed. C. Outside Plant Cable Installation 2.07 Outside Plant (OSP) cable may be any of several types. Regardless of the type, OSP cable can be routed to the Fiber Splice Panel from above, below, or at either side of the rack or cabinet (Figure 8). Cable clamp points are provided just above and just below the opening at each side of the chassis (Figure 9) Each installation will likely have specific cabling requirements that must be addressed during the planning process. A cable clamp kit is provided. The IFC or OSP cable should be clamped at any of the four locations. This limits to a minimum, the amount of cable that needs to be stripped and cleaned. 12 CABLE CLAMP POINTS (2 EACH SIDE) A Figure 9. Cable Clamping Points Buffer Tube Cable 2.09 This section describes how to install buffer tube cable. The cable clamp provided in the cable clamp kit accommodates any cable that has an external diameter of 0.40 to 0.80 inches (10.2 to 20.3 mm). Cable may be routed to each clamping location from either above or below the Fiber Splice Panel. Use the following procedure to route and clamp each cable: 1. Route the cable to the clamping location on the chassis (Figure 9). 2. Determine the length of cable required for routing fibers from the clamp point to the cable splice point. If necessary, use a spare length of tubing to determine the length required. Allow an additional 90-inches (2.3 meters) for a splice service loop within the panel. 3. Strip the cable sheath to the length determined in step 2 to expose the buffer tubes. Follow the cable manufacturer s recommendations for stripping the sheath and cleaning the buffer tubes. 4. If the cable has a metallic inner sheath that must be bonded to ground, a Scotchlok 4460 Shield Connector and the instructions supplied with it can be used for this purpose. 5. If the cable is filled with water blocking compound, seal the cable end to prevent leakage using an optional blocking kit. Use the instructions supplied with the blocking kit. 6. Determine the correct clamp and grommet combination required for securing the cable to the panel. A rubber clamp and grommets of various sizes are provided in the clamp kit. A grommet must be placed between the cable sheath and the clamp if the cable is between 0.40 and 0.70 inches (10.2 to 17.8 mm) in diameter. To select the correct grommet, place each size grommet on the cable. Measure the width of the gap (Figure 10). Any grommet with a gap width that ranges from nearly zero to 0.30 inches (7.6 mm) is suitable. If the cable diameter is greater than 0.70 inches (17.8 mm), only the rubber clamp is used. 7. Place the grommet (if needed) and the two halves of the rubber clamp around the end of the cable and secure the cable clamp to the clamp point in the panel (Figure 11). 8. Refer to Fiber Splicing for routing and splicing procedures. Page 12

14 LIGHTPACK Cable 2.10 This procedure describes how to route and secure LIGHTPACK cable. Installation of this type of cable is similar to installation of buffer tube cable, except a buffer tube kit is required. Use the procedure below to install this type of cable. 1. Refer to the Buffer Tube cable installation procedure and perform steps 1 through Install a buffer tube kit according to the instructions provided with the kit. Separate the cable fibers into groups that are multiples of 12 which is the number of fibers that each splice tray will accommodate. Install splitter and then carefully feed each group of fibers into one of the protective tubes provided with the buffer tube kit. 3. Refer to Service Loop and Splicing for routing and splicing procedures. Ribbon Cable 2.11 This procedure describes how to install ribbon cable. The ribbon cable clamp kit provides a means for securing each ribbon cable to the chassis. Cables may be routed to the panel from above or below, to the clamping locations at either side. Use the following procedure to route and secure the cable to the panel. 1. Route the cable to the selected clamping location. Note that ribbon fibers usually extend about 4 feet (1.2 meters) beyond the cable end. 2. Assemble the rubber clamp around the top section of the ribbon cable end collar and secure it to the clamping location (Figure 12). CLAMP COVER SCREWS (2) RIBBON CABLE 1512-A Figure 12. 16 Pigtail Installation 2.13 Pigtails are individual lengths of fiber that have a fiber optic connector attached to one end. The pigtail connector is normally routed to a bulkhead receptacle or adapter at the rear of a connector panel. The other end of the pigtail fiber is routed to a splice tray in the splice panel where it is spliced to the trunk cable Pigtails are normally installed in groups of twelve. For protection, each group of pigtails should be installed in a protective sleeve such as a fiberglass protective tube or spiral wrap Pigtails are routed to the Fiber Splice Panel from above or below. They enter the panel at either side, and then enter a given splice drawer through cable slots at the rear. Use the following procedure to install pigtails. 1. Determine the length of fiber required for routing each pigtail. If necessary, use a spare length of fiber for a trial routing to determine the exact length required. 2. Add 90 inches (2.3 meters) to the length determined in step 1. This becomes the splicing service loop within the splice drawer. 3. Select the number and length of pigtails as determined in steps 1 and For identification, apply a designation tag at each end of the pigtail. 5. Carefully feed the pigtails into the protective tube as shown in Figure 14. Feed pigtails until all fibers emerge from the opposite end. 6. Mate each pigtail connector with the appropriate bulkhead adapter or bulkhead receptacle on the connector module. Follow the connector manufacturer s recommendations regarding use of dust caps, connector tightening, and connector cleaning procedures. 7. Adjust the protective tube so the pigtails are protected where they enter the connector module. 8. Route the pigtails into the chassis, making sure excess slack is removed. Select the splice drawer and splice tray that will be used for splicing. 9. Repeat the above steps for the next group of fibers. 10. From the rear of the chassis, start the pigtails through the cable slot in the back side of the splice drawer (Figure 15). 11. Open the splice drawer and carefully draw the fiber bundle into the drawer. Route the fiber bundle as shown in Figure 16. Page 16

18 10428-B Figure 16. Routing Fibers to Splice Tray Splicing 2.16 This section provides the procedures for splicing the pigtails to the OSP cable. The splice trays hold and protect the completed splices. Fusion, heat shrink, mechanical, rotary, Northern Telecom, Fibrlok, Raychem, and Universal Raychem splice trays are available. When the splice tray is filled, it is fitted with a plastic cover and secured into the chassis with an elastic strap. The trays can be easily removed from the chassis for splicing activity Splicing should be accomplished using local standard practice. Use the following procedure to lay out the pigtails and buffer tubes so that fibers are the correct length for storage in the splice drawer when splicing is complete. 1. Select the splice tray that will be used for splicing. The pigtails should already be bundled into groups (12 maximum). 2. Remove the selected splice tray and place it in a convenient splice location within reach of 90-inch (2.28 meter) service loop. 3. All fibers must enter the same end of the splice tray. Lay the fibers onto the tray as shown in Figure 16. Allow enough cable length for the selected splicing method. 4. Trim all pigtail and cable fibers to the required length. Remove the buffer tubes or protective tubes to expose the cable fibers. Clean fibers as recommended by the cable manufacturer. 5. For a mass fusion type splice, position the two ribbons intact end-to-end within the splice chip as shown in Figure Use a tie wrap to secure the pigtail bundle to the splice tray. The tie wrap should be secured at the small plastic sleeve. Page 18

19 MASS FUSION CHIP RIBBON RIBBON 9016-A Figure 17. Mass Fusion Chip 7. Use tie wraps to secure the OSP and pigtail cable fibers to the tray. 8. Complete each splice according to standard practice. Record the cable number on the designation label. 9. Test each pigtail as splicing is completed. 10. Carefully secure each completed splice to the splice tray. When all splices are completed and secured, place the clear plastic cover over the splice tray to protect the finished splices. 11. Coil up the service loop and secure the splice tray with the elastic strap as shown in Figure Repeat the process for each additional bundle of pigtails and cable fibers. 13. Carefully close the splice drawer and front door when finished with the splicing. Verify that the pigtails and cable fibers do not get pinched or kinked. 14. Repeat this same procedure for each splice drawer within the splice panel. E. Final Check 2.18 Make a final check to ensure all cables are properly routed and not stressed or pinched. Install the protection plate at each side of the chassis. Page 19
