2 TRODUCTION This publication describes the DSXi product family and provides instructions for installation and operation. The person using this publication must have a working knowledge of how digital signal cross-connect systems are used for terminating, patching, and testing network elements operating at the DS1 signal level. To prevent electrical shock, never install or use electrical equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. 1 DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS This section describes the DSXi product family and provides basic product specifications. DSXi cross-connect products provide a cross-connect interface between network elements and also enable testing, patching, and circuit reconfiguration without disturbing the semi-permanent network element connections. 1.1 Basic Product Description Each DSXi cross-connect panel consists primarily of a sheet metal chassis, a bantam jack field, a network element termination field, and a network element cross-connect field. Mounting brackets and designation cards are included with all panels. Wire guideways and cable management rings are included when necessary for cable management. Panels are available with the various heights, widths, circuit densities, labeling formats, and wiring connections shown in Table 1. DSXi panels use industry standard accessories (patch cords, plugs, etc.) and mount in industry standard EIA and WECO equipment racks and bays. All panels may be flush-mounted or recessed 2, 3, or 4 inches. The bantam jack field provides a means for accessing each network element circuit for monitoring, testing, patching, or signal insertion. The and jacks provide intrusive access to the input and output circuits. Inserting a patch cord connector into an or jack opens the corresponding input or output circuit and connects the patch cord to the network element side of the circuit. The MON (monitor) jacks provide non intrusive bridged access to the output circuits. Inserting a patch cord connector into a MON jack connects the patch cord to the circuit without interrupting the circuit. A tracer lamp lights whenever a patch cord is inserted into a MON jack. A circuit diagram of the various jack functions is shown in Figure 1. Page 3

Functional Diagram of a Typical DSXi Cross-Connect Panel The network element termination field provides a point for terminating the network element cables at the panel. Depending on the ordering options available for the panel, the network element termination field may be equipped with either wire-wrap pins or 64-pin amp connectors. Panels may be ordered to support 56, 64, or 84 terminations. Several circuit labeling schemes are available depending on the number of terminations and the panel configuration. Page 4

5 The network element cross-connect field provides a point for cross-connecting the terminated network element circuits and for linking together the tracer lamp circuit associated with each circuit. The cross-connect field consists entirely of wire-wrap pins. 1.2 Cross-Connect Panel Configurations DSXi panels are available with the following four basic panel configurations: Rear Cross-Connect: All rear cross-connect panels have the bantam jack field mounted on the front side of the panel and the network element termination and cross-connect fields mounted on the rear side of the panel. An example of a typical rear cross-connect panel is shown in Figure 2. Front-Split Cross-Connect: All front-split cross-connect panels have the bantam jack field and the network element cross-connect field mounted on the front side of the panel. The network element termination field is mounted on the rear side of the panel. The cross-connect field is split into two sections which are mounted on either side of the jack field. An example of a typical front-split cross-connect panel is shown in Figure 3. Front-Below Cross-Connect: All front-below cross-connect panels have the bantam jack field and the network element cross-connect field mounted on the front side of the panel. The crossconnect field is mounted below the jack field. The network element termination field is mounted on the rear side of the panel. 7 Total Front Access Cross-Connect: All total front access panels have the bantam jack field and the network element termination and cross-connect fields mounted on the front side of the panel. The cross-connect field is located on either side of the jack field. The termination field is located below the jack field. Typical Total Front Access Cross-Connect Panel (64 termination panel shown) 1.3 Skeleton Bays Empty 19- or 23-inch WECO network-style equipment racks may be ordered for mounting DSXi cross-connect panels. Two basic bay configurations to accommodate DSXi rear crossconnect or front cross-connect panels are available. All skeleton (empty) bays include a fuse panel, upper and lower horizontal jumper troughs, and vertical jumper rings. Bays are painted putty white and are ready for installation of the cross-connect panels. Accessory parts for bays including filler panels, end guard panels, AC raceways, and installation kits may also be ordered separately. 1.4 Environmental Specifications The DSXi System will operate in any ambient temperature and humidity within the following ranges: Temperature: 5 ºC to +55º C (+23º F to +131º F) Per Telcordia GR-63. Humidity: up to 95% relative humidity without condensation. Per Telcordia GR-63. The DSX System can be shipped and stored in any ambient temperature and humidity within the following ranges: Temperature: 40º C to +60º C ( 40º F to +140º F). Humidity: 10% to 95% relative humidity without condensation. Page 7

8 2 BEFORE STARTG THE STALLATION This section provides general installation considerations, unpacking and inspection procedures, and lists the tools and materials required for installing DSXi cross-connect panels. 2.1 Installation Overview Installation of the DSXi cross-connect panel involves the following tasks: Assembling and mounting the panel The mounting brackets are shipped loose and must be installed on the panel. The panel must then be mounted in the equipment rack. Various cable management devices such as cable rings and cable troughs must be installed after the panel is mounted in the rack. Connecting the grounding wiring A grounding wire must be installed between an office ground source and the panel s grounding terminal block. The size of the grounding wire is dependent on local wiring requirements. Wire greater than 22 AWG requires an appropriately sized ring or spade terminal. Connecting the power wiring A pair of 24 AWG (or larger) solid copper wires must be installed between the fuse panel that provides -48 Volt DC power to the bay and the panel s power terminal block. Connecting the network element wiring Shielded twisted pair copper cable (22 26 AWG) must be installed between the DSX network element transmit/receive terminals and the panel s network element termination field. The panel may be equipped with either 64-pin amp connectors or wire-wrap pins depending on the type of panel ordered. Connecting the cross-connect wiring Five-conductor 24 AWG jumper wire with two twisted pairs must be installed between the cross-connect fields for the two network elements. 2.2 Unpacking and Inspection The DSXi panel and accessory package are packed separately for protection during shipping. Open the shipping carton and carefully unpack the panel and any other items from the protective packing material. Verify that all parts on the packing slip have been received before discarding the shipping containers. If there are any damaged or missing parts, contact ADC (see Section 3) for an RMA (Return Material Authorization) and to reorder if replacement is required. 2.3 Tools and Supplies Required The following basic tools and supplies are required for all cross-connect panel installations: Wire cutter. 9 #1 Phillips screwdriver #2 Phillips screwdriver Chassis grounding wire (sized per local requirement - green) Power wiring (24 AWG or larger solid copper wire - white and black) Network element wiring (22 26 AWG shielded twisted pair cable) Cross-connect wiring (five-conductor 24 AWG jumper cable with two twisted pairs and one tracer lamp wire) Appropriately sized connectors if the grounding wire exceeds 22 AWG Cable ties Crimping tool if connectors are required for the grounding wiring 3 ASSEMBLG AND MOUNTG THE PANEL This section provides assembly and mounting instructions for a typical DSXi cross-connect panel. Because the product offering may vary depending on panel configuration, refer to the installation drawing that is shipped with the panel for assembly and mounting information specific to the panel. 3.1 Mounting the Panel Use the following procedure to install the panel in the equipment rack: 1. Locate all the parts that are shipped separately with the panel including mounting brackets, cable guides, troughs, tie bars, screws, and designation cards. 2. Orient the mounting brackets for installation on the panel as shown in Figure 6. If the panel is 19 inches wide, the brackets may be mounted to allow installation in either a 19- or 23-inch rack. 10 3. Secure the brackets to the sides of the panel using the eight 6-32 flat-head thread-forming screws provided. Tighten screws to 8 pound force-inches (0.9 Newton meters) to insure the mounting brackets are electrically bonded to the chassis. Note: Multiple sets of holes are provided on the sides of the panel for attaching the mounting brackets. This allows the mounting brackets to be mounted flush with the front of the panel or with a 2, 3, or 4 inch recess. 4. Place the panel in the specified mounting space within the rack. 5. Secure the panel to the rack as shown in Figure 7 using the four pan-head screws and flat washers provided. If the panel includes cable guides for the front side of the panel, install the cable guides on top of the mounting brackets. Mounting the Panel in the Equipment Rack 6. Cable trays, support bars, or rings may be included for the rear side of the panel. Figure 8 shows some typical cable management devices that are used with DSXi panels. Secure each cable management device to the panel using the #6-32 or #8-32 pan-head thread forming screws provided. Refer to the installation drawing provided with the panel for exact placement of each component. Note: For rear cross-connect panels, the rear cable tray should not be secured to the panel until after the network element wiring has been connected to the panel. Page 10

Typical Rear Cable Management Devices 4 GROUNDG WIRE CONNECTIONS A grounding terminal block, shown in Figure 9, is mounted on either the front or rear side of each DSXi panel. A metal strap is installed between the chassis ground and shield ground terminals. To isolate chassis ground from shield ground, remove the metal strap before connecting the grounding wire to the grounding terminal block. Install a grounding wire between the office ground source and the grounding terminal block. The type of grounding wire required and the wire size is dependent on local wiring requirements. Typically a green wire is used for grounding purposes. Wire greater than 22 AWG requires an appropriately sized ring or spade terminal for connection to the terminal block. Page 11

Typical Grounding Terminal Block 5 POWER WIRG CONNECTIONS The DSXi panel requires 48 VDC filtered office battery power which must be supplied through a fuse panel or circuit breaker panel. The approximate current requirements can be calculated based on the number of LED lamps mounted in the DSXi panel times the current draw of a single LED lamp (0.01 Amps). It is recommended that each DSXi panel be protected with a 0.5 Amp fuse/breaker and connected to the fuse/breaker panel with 24 AWG (minimum) solid copper wire. A power terminal block, shown in Figure 10, is mounted on either the front or rear side of each DSXi panel. Use the following procedure to install the power wiring between the fuse/breaker panel and the DSXi panel: Caution: Before connecting the power wiring to the DSXi cross-connect panel, make sure the office battery power circuit that will provide power to the panel is disconnected at the fuse or circuit breaker panel. This is can be accomplished by removing the fuse or placing the circuit breaker in the OFF position. 1. Connect a white wire between the 48 terminal on the DSXi panel power terminal block and the BATT terminal on the fuse/breaker panel output power terminal block. Note: Refer to the User Manual provided with the fuse/breaker panel for specific instructions on connecting the power wiring to the fuse/breaker panel output power terminal block. 2. Connect a black wire between the RTN terminal on the DSXi panel power terminal block and the RTN terminal on the fuse/breaker panel output power terminal block. 3. Install the terminal block cover on the power terminal block. 4. Following completion of the network element wiring connections (covered in Section 6), apply power to the DSXi panel by inserting a 0.5 Amp fuse into the appropriate fuse holder or by placing the appropriate circuit breaker in the ON position. Typical Power Terminal Block 6 WIRG CONNECTIONS The network element cables connect the DS1 (T1) digital equipment to the DSXi panel. The DSXi panels provide an equal level transmission point for connected digital network elements. All equipment terminated must operate at the DS1 (1.544 Mbps) transmission rate. Each network element typically has an equalizer or pad which must be set for various cable lengths to maintain the proper transmission level. Refer to the User Manual provided with the network element for the recommended cable length setting and the signal level adjustment procedure. 6.1 Network Element Cabling Recommendations The recommended cable for connecting digital equipment to the DSXi panel is AWG shielded twisted pair cable. The panel may be equipped with either 64-pin receptacle-type amp connectors or wire-wrap pins depending on the type of panel ordered. Network element cables may enter the bay from the top or the bottom. If cables enter from the top, cable attachment should start with the bottom panel and then work upward. If cables enter from the bottom, cable attachment should start with the top panel and then work downward. All cabling should conform to local practice. Cables should be secured to cable rings or within the duct formed between unequal flange racks. For cables that will connect to wire-wrap pins, strip the cable jacket from an area past the last cable tie on the cable ring. After stripping, the end of the cable jacket should be even with the wire-wrap pins to which the cable wires will be connected. Provide a six-inch service loop between the last cable tie and the point where the cable is routed horizontally. 6.2 Network Element Input and Output Connections All DSX1 bays and panels are shipped with installation drawings. Refer to these drawings for specific information on how the input/output and cross-connect terminals are wired to each DSX circuit and front-panel jack. All termination fields, cross-connect fields, and jacks are clearly numbered for quick and accurate identification. Designation cards are also provided to record all terminations. Page 13

14 Caution: Before connecting the network element wiring to the DSXi cross-connect panel, make sure the office battery power circuit that feeds the DSXi panel is disconnected at the fuse or circuit breaker panel. For panels equipped with wire-wrap pins, connect the network element transmit and receive cable pairs to the and wire-wrap pins on the DSXi panel network element termination field. Figure 11 shows an example of a typical network element wire-wrap pin connection. Record each network element termination on the designation card or strip provided. Typical Network Element Wire-Wrap Pin Connection For panels equipped with 64-pin connectors, use 32-pair cables equipped with 64-pin male connectors to connect the network element to the and 64-pin female connectors on the DSXi panel. Refer to the installation drawing provided with the panel for the connector assignments, the connector-pin assignments, and the circuit numbers associated with each pair of pins. A diagram of a typical 64-pin connector is shown in Figure 12. 15 7 CROSS-CONNECT WIRG CONNECTIONS The cross-connect jumper wires provide a semi-permanent connection between the network element terminations at the DSXi cross-connect panels. The digital transmit and receive signals from the network elements enter and exit the cross-connect panels through the and cross-connect wire-wrap pins. By connecting cross-connect wiring to the appropriate wire-wrap pins, network elements may be linked together. The cross-connect wires are routed between panels using the guideways and troughs within the DSX lineup. 7.1 Cross-Connect Wire Routing Cross-connect jumper wires should be routed between panels using the horizontal wireways between bays and the vertical wireways within a bay. A diagram of the recommended routing is shown in Figure 13 Whenever a jumper changes direction, it should do so where a ring, tray, or fanning strip is located. This will allow the jumpers to be dressed neatly without strain or interfering with other jumpers. All discontinued jumpers should be removed from the DSX wireways to prevent unnecessary buildup and congestion. 16 Wire congestion will be held to a minimum if all recommendations are carefully followed. This simplifies installation, provides for easy wire tracing, and simpler DSXi expansion and maintenance. 7.2 Cross-Connect Wire Installation Use five-conductor 24 AWG copper wire (two twisted pairs and one tracer lamp wire) for crossconnecting DSXi circuits. To insure reliable signal levels, the maximum jumper length recommended (including cross-aisle tie cables) is 85 feet (26.0 m). Basic Five-Wire DSXi Cross-Connect Wiring All cross-connections are made using the cross-connect wire-wrap terminals. Select the designated network elements to be cross-connected by referring to the office equipment connection records on the DSXi designation cards and strips. Use the following procedure to make the required connections: 1. Connect the TL (termination lamp) pin of the first panel to the TL (termination lamp) pin of the second panel using the green wire. 2. Connect the (T and R pins) of the first panel to the (T and R pins) of the second panel using the blue wire for Tip and blue-white wire for Ring. 3. Connect the (T and R pins) of the first panel to the (T and R pins) of the second panel using the orange wire for Tip and orange-white wire for Ring. 4. Verify that the correct equipment was cross-connected by inserting a dummy plug into the MON jack (at either panel) of the cross-connected circuit. The tracer lamps for the crossconnected circuit should light on both panels. Page 16

17 Remove any discontinued jumper wires by disconnecting each end and cutting off the bare ends. Remove each end of the jumper from the vertical wireways and carefully remove the jumper from the horizontal wireway by pulling at either end. This method will allow the jumper to be removed without snagging or placing undue strain on the remaining jumpers. 7.3 Using Cross-Aisle Panels A typical cross-aisle panel consists of a rack-mounted panel that is equipped with blocks of two-sided wire-wrap pins. Cross-aisle panels are mounted at intervals within each DSX lineup. Tie cables link the cross-aisle panels together. The cross-aisle panels and tie cables eliminate the need to route cross-connect wiring between DSX lineups. A diagram of how a cross-connect panel system works is shown in Figure 15. Refer to the DSX-1 and DSX-C Cross-Aisle Panel User Manual (ADCP ) for detailed instructions on the use of cross-aisle panels. Connecting network element cables to a DSXi cross-connect panel inserts a switching jack into both the and the circuits. A monitor jack is also inserted into the circuit. Page 17

18 8.1 Bantam Jack Field Function The bantam jack field provides a non-intrusive MON (monitor) jack and tracer lamp plus and switching jacks for each set of input and output circuits. A circuit diagram of the bantam jack field is shown in Figure 16. The MON jack is connected to the network element output circuit and provides non-intrusive bridged access to the output signal. Inserting a patch cord plug into the MON jack connects the patch cord to the network element output signal but does not interrupt the circuit. Inserting a plug into the MON jack also causes the tracer lamps (TL) to light on both cross-connect panels. Bantam Jack Field Circuit Diagram The jack is connected to the network element output circuit and the jack is connected to the network element input circuit. When no plugs are inserted into the jacks, the output/input signals pass in and out of the panel through the cross-connect wiring. Inserting a patch cord plug into either the or jack temporarily disconnects the cross-connect wires from that circuit and connects the patch cord to the network element. The and jacks allow service technicians to temporarily override the cross-connect jumper connections and to establish new connections using patch cords. This is often necessary when conducting tests, reconfiguring equipment, or restoring service. Refer to the DSX-1 Cross-Connect Operational Procedures (ADCP ) and the DS1 Digital Signal Cross- Connect System Application Guide (ADCP ) for instructions on using the cross-connect panel bantam jack field for patching and testing. 8.2 Interbay Patch Panels Interbay patch panels are jack fields used for patching between bays and lineups to eliminate the use of long patch cords. Interbay patch panels are usually located in maintenance bays within the DSX lineup. In a typical lineup, every fourth bay is designated as a maintenance bay. Patch panels allow use of several short patch cords when trying to patch between widely spaced DSXi panels. Patching panels are interconnected with tie cables according to the lineup design. Refer to the DS1 Digital Signal Cross-Connect System Application Guide (ADCP ) for instructions on using interbay patch panels. Page 18

19 9 MATENANCE The DSXi cross-connect panel requires only minimal maintenance including period cleaning, wiring inspections, and replacement of burned out tracer lamps. 9.1 Cleaning and Inspection Panels should be cleaning during routine office equipment maintenance. Accumulated dirt and film should be removed using a vacuum cleaner and clean soft brushes and cloths. Take care to prevent dust and dirt from getting into the jacks. Preventive maintenance consists of visual inspections and continuity testing. Correct any problems that may be discovered such as loose wiring or inadequately secured cables. Check the cross-connections by inserting a dummy plug or patch cord into the MON jack of any crossconnected circuits and verifying that the LEDs on both panels light. 9.2 Tracer Lamp Replacement Burned out tracer lamps are replaced from the front side of the cross-connect panel. A lamp can be removed by pulling it straight out of its socket. No special tools are required. When installing a replacement lamp (catalog# Di-FLEDR), orient the lamp so the resistor is turned toward the bottom as shown in Figure 17. ORIENT LED SO RESISTOR IS ON THE BOTTOM A Figure 17.
