3 Theory of Operation When powered, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) sends a test current to the squibs to verify the integrity of the squib and wiring. These circuits are maintained in a floating configuration at the module (connected to neither power nor ground) as protection against inadvertent deployment. Use of the SRS Load Tool 8443A SRS Load Tool 8443A in the tests below substitutes a suspect squib with a known good component. The use of the Adapter, Supplemental Restraint System Load Tool Adapter, Supplemental Restraint System Load Tool provides a test point as well as a method for opening the shorting bar connections within the harness connector. The rear seat airbags (also known as pelvic and thorax airbags) are completely concealed beneath the seat cushion trim cover on the lower outboard sides of the rear seat cushion. The thorax airbag is a single stage device. The thorax side airbags and the side curtain airbags deploy together during an event separate of the front airbags. The Airbag Warning Lamp (AWL) will set in the instrument cluster. When Monitored: With the ignition on. Set Condition: The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) monitors the resistance of the Right Seat Thorax Airbag Squib circuits. If an open or high resistance is detected on the Right Seat Thorax Squib circuits for.6 seconds the ORC will set this DTC. The DTC will change from Active to Stored status if the fault condition is not detected for.6 seconds. The Airbag Warning Lamp (AWL) will set in the instrument cluster. Possible Causes (R6) CIRCUIT OPEN (R8) CIRCUIT OPEN AIRBAG OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER (ORC) Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ Diagnostic Test. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.. Record the Environmental Data. 3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs. 4. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC. 5. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs. Did the DTC return? Yes Go To 3

4 No Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/. CHECK FOR A FAULTY WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury. WARNING: Do not place an intact non-deployed airbag face down on a hard surface, the airbag propels into the air if accidentally deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.. Disconnect the affected Squib harness connector and insure connector and terminals are not damaged.. Using the Airbag Kit and/or , connect tool to the Squib connector. 3. Turn the ignition on. 4. Clear DTC and note if it returns. Did the DTC return? No Replace the affected Squib in accordance with Service Information. (Refer to 0 - Restraints/AIR BAG, Seat/ Removal and Installation). Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ Yes Go To 3 3. CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR SHORT TO GROUND. Disconnect the Squib connector and the related Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) connector. NOTE: Probing of the circuit cavities at the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) body harness connectors and inline connectors using test kit for back probing the terminal will prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures.. Check for continuity between ground and both of the Squib circuits at the Squib harness connector. Is there continuity between ground and either circuit? Yes Repair the Squib circuit(s) for a short to ground. Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure) No Go To 4 4. CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER. Check for continuity between the Squib circuits at the Squib harness connector. Is there continuity between the Squib circuits? Yes Repair the short between the Squib circuits. Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ 4

5 No Go To 5 5. CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE. Measure the resistance of the Squib circuits from the Squib harness connector to the ORC harness connector. Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms on either circuit? Yes Go To 6 No Repair the Squib circuit(s) for an open or high resistance. Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ 6. CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE. Measure the voltage between ground and the Squib circuits at the Squib connector. Is there any voltage present on either circuit? Yes Repair the Squib circuit(s) for a short to voltage. Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury. Replace the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) in accordance with Service Information. (Refer to 08 - Electrical/8E - Electronic Control Modules/MODULE, Occupant Restraint/Removal and Installation). Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ 5
