3 1. presentation of the VIP30 and VIP35 Mitop VIP30 VIP35 - simplified wiring scheme - t 1,2 Is I - phase protection VIP30, VIP35 - t to> Io> I - earth fault protection VIP35 - self-powered protective relays The VIP30 and VIP35 relays are designed for use in distribution networks, mainly in MV/LV substations in which they provide protection upstream from the transformer. They are self-powered relays that do not require any auxiliary supply; they are supplied by the current sensors. They actuate a Mitop release. n The VIP30 provides protection against phase-to-phase faults. n The VIP35 provides protection against phase-to-phase faults and earth faults. phase protection Phase protection uses an IDMT setting that operates as of 1.2 times the setting current (Is). The VIP30 and VIP35 phase protections are the same earth protection Protection against earth faults operates by measurement of residual current based on the sum of the sensor secondary currents. Measurement is carried out by a CSH30 core balance CT mounted on the back of the VIP35 unit. Earth protection operates with definite time; the setting and time delay are adjustable. VIP30 WED VIP30 WED has the same characteristics than VIP30. The difference between VIP30 WED and VIP30 is only the marking on the scale label. F see chapter 5 "choice of the setting scale label". To set VIP30 WED, the selector switch must suit the rated power. sensors n CRc sensor of the RM6: (sensors for RM6s 199 and later) The VIP30/35 relays must be used with the CRc sensors to obtain the specified performances. - The CRc sensors have 2 ranges; according to the range used, the setting current is adjustable from A to 0A or from 20A to 200A. - The cross-section of the core and the resistance of the winding are adapted to protect the VIP30/35 in the event of a short-circuit. n other type of The use of other existing 200/1 sensors calls for the addition of protective resistors in series. description n The VIP30 and VIP35 relays are mounted in a polycarbonate injected casing which protects them against dripping water and dusty environments. The front is protected by a transparent cover fitted with a sealing joint. The cover may be lead-sealed to prohibit access to the settings. n Rotating selector switches are used for setting. The phase setting current and earth fault setting current are set directly in amperes. This means that the scale on the front must be adapted to suit the range used on the sensor. This is done by positioning a "setting scale label" on the relay at the time of assembly. n The connection is made on the back of the relay using fast-on clips. 6 2. use and settings (cont d) phase protection (VIP30 and VIP35) 1. phase protection zone The phase protection information is grouped together in the dark zone of the upper half of the front face. This zone is the same for the VIP30 and VIP35 2. setting current Is Time-delayed tripping of the earth protection takes place as of 1.2 x Is. According to the range used on the sensor, the setting current is adjustable from A to 0A or from 20A to 200A; the selector switch scale is to be adapted to suit the range used by means of the setting scale label. earth protection (VIP 35) 4. earth protection zone This zone contains the earth protection settings. 5. earth protection setting The setting is made directly in MV amperes. 6. earth protection time delay The earth protection time delay is set in seconds. 7. inrush current delay This selector switch starts up the inrush current delay (1s). The time delay prevents tripping by the earth protection when the VIP35 is energized upon making of the circuit breaker. The time delay only active for the earth protection and has no effect on tripping by the phase protection. n in off position: The inrush current delay is not activated. The earth protection operates according to the setting of the selector switch (6). n in on: position The inrush current delay is activated. In this case: - when the VIP35 is energized, and the circuit breaker makes, tripping by the earth protection is delayed by 1 second. - when the VIP35 has been supplied for more than a second, the earth protection is time-delayed according to the setting (6). F When the circuit breaker makes, energizing of the MV/LV transformer may generate aperiodic inrush currents with a DC component that momentarily saturates the magnetic cores of the VIP35 sensors. Because of this, each sensor gives an erroneous result and the sum of the phase currents (at the sensor secondary windings) is no longer zero. There is false earth fault detection that may cause tripping of the earth protection. This is especially critical when the setting and time delay settings are low. F If the time delay settings are below the values indicated in the chart below, start up the inrush current delay: Io> setting to> time delay 0. to 0.9 x Ia 0.2 s 0.6 to 0. x Ia 0.3 s 0.4 to 0.6 x Ia 0.4 s 0.2 to 0.4 x Ia 0.5 s Ia = rated current of the transformer to be protected 6 Relays technical manual VIP30, VIP35

7 2. use and settings (cont d) other functions CRc: F0, to be used Is Io> recto Is Io> verso CRc: F0, S3 to be used e.g. VIP35 setting scale label - a. setting scale label n It should be mounted on the VIP30/35 when it is assembled on the circuit breaker. The label indicates the scales of the phase setting current (VIP30/35) and earth protection setting (VIP35) selector switches. It is inserted, from the top, behind the transparent part of the front face. Install the label according to: - the type of relay: VIP30 or VIP35 - the range used on the CRc sensor n The label is printed on both sides. This means that it may be turned around if the range is changed during the service life of the installation. F also refer to the "assembly" chapter. b. sensor used and wiring The text is printed on the setting scale label. It indicates which secondary winding of the CRc sensor is to be used in accordance with the chosen range. When the label is in position in the slot, the text is hidden by and opaque zone. It is not visible to the user. F also refer to the "sensors and operating ranges" chapter. c. VAP6 test plug The test plug is exclusively designed for connection of the VAP6 which is used for fast, simplified relay testing. The operation may be carried out while the relay is operating since the VAP6 and VIP30/35 provide the possibility of testing with inhibition of circuit breaker tripping. The test is possible even if the relay is not supplied by the sensors. In that case, the VAP6 supplies the VIP30/35. - testing of the VIP30/35 using the VAP6 - d. minimum time delay switch n The circular opening in the front face gives access to switch which is used to time delay the tripping order by at least 25 ms. The time delay may be started up to prevent the circuit breaker from breaking at the beginning of the asymmetrical phase in the event of a strong fault. n It should or should not be started up, depending on the type of circuit breaker. The user does not have access to the time delay since the opening is hidden by the setting scale label. - how to install the setting scale label - Relays technical manual VIP30, VIP35 7

8 3. sensors and operating ranges sensors To obtain the performances indicated, the VIP30 and VIP35 must be used with the specified sensors. The relay/sensor assembly must be used together to comply with the technical characteristics indicated, in particular: - operation across the range - tripping time - accuracy - short-circuit performance It is compulsory for the sensors of each of the phases to be of the same type. sensor specified for VIP30/35: - CRc 200/500/ F0 (1) - CSa 200/1 of the SFSet (2) (1) for RM6 model 9 and later (2) with protective resistors CRc sensor The CRc sensor is a core balance current transformer with a let-through primary winding. It has 2 secondary windings. S3 Wire the secondary winding according to the desired operating range: range ratio wiring A-0A 200/1-20A-200A 500/1 -S3 The secondary sensor has non-active turns, the resistance of which protects the VIP30/35 in the event of a shortcircuit in the MV network. other 200/1 sensors Different 200/1 sensors are already used in the group. Their winding resistance is generally too low to ensure protection of VIP30/35 in the event of a short-circuit. It is necessary to add a protective resistor Rp in series with each sensor. The calculation of the resistor depends on the characteristics of the winding and magnetic core of the sensor. F refer to "connection scheme" chapter. Tighten the 2 screws moderately. In order to measure the residual current, the wires of the secondary windings of the 3 sensors are inserted through the CSH30 core balance CT and connected to the fast-on clips. n Connect (F) outputs 1 and 2 of the CSH30 core balance CT to terminals 13 and of the VIP35. The CSH30 core balance CT output is a low level signal so the length of the 2 wires should never be more than 15 cm. Terminal 3 of the CSH30 core balance CT output connector is not used. n the CSH30 and its 2 screws for thermoplastic (G) 3 are supplied with the VIP35. assembly H N V P n Insert the VIP30/35 in the cut-out and correctly position the 2 lower pins (H) of the casing on the edge of the metal plate cut-out. n Tighten the screw (V) on the mounting lug. It is accessible via the front face after the transparent cover has been opened. n After tightening, make sure that the latch (N) of the lock (visible on the rear face) is in the vertical position, pressing against the support plate. F the latch may be put into the vertical position by loosening each of the screws (V) before tightening them. n The hole (P) may be used to leadseal the relay after the setting scale label is installed and the settings are made. 17 6. technical characteristics (cont d) notes 1. When the VIP30/35 is used with CRc sensors, the -0A range, and for I < 20A, the accuracy is derated in accordance with the following characteristics: - phase operating setting: 1.2Is -% +30%. The tolerance is mainly due to the non-linearity of the sensors for low currents. The inaccuracy can reach the limit above if the relay is only supplied by one phase. This may be the case during single-phase injection testing. 2. Given for the operating setting at 1.2 Is 3. Not applicable to the test plug 4. The times are measured for a phase-to-phase fault which appears when the relay is already supplied (prior presence of a current in the network that is greater than the minimum operating current). In the event of closing in the presence of a fault, the tripping times may be increased by 20ms. The times indicated do not include the mitop response time since it depends on the circuit breaker (the no load mitop tripping time is less than 5 ms). 5. The tripping times are measured for a sinusoidal current. 6. When the VIP30/35 is used with CRc sensors, and for I < 30A, the accuracy is derated in accordance with the following characteristics: - earth protection setting: ± % or 0/+6 A The tolerance is mainly due to the non-linearity of the sensors for low currents. The inaccuracy can reach the limit above if the relay is only supplied by one phase. This may be the case during single-phase injection testing. dimensions * wiring CSH30 (VIP35) * including 5mm for cables with CSH30 (interposing ring CT) Relays technical manual VIP30, VIP35 17

The test can be carried out in the following two cases: - the VIP30/35 is already supplied by the sensors. - the VIP30/35 is not supplied. In this case, the VAP6 batteries supply power to the relay. The test consists of: - injecting a stimulus to simulate a phase fault. - injecting a stimulus to simulate an earth fault (VIP35). - checking tripping. Frefer to the description of the test in the section entitled "test sequence" F the VAP6 is supplied by batteries. Therefore the parts of the VIP30/35 that run on AC current are not checked using this method (input and supply circuits). push-buttons n battery test: if the batteries are OK, the "on" indicator lights up while the button is pushed. n phase overcurrent: it sends the phase protection test stimulus. The stimulus is equivalent to 20 times the setting current Is. n earth fault: it sends the earth protection test stimulus. The stimulus is equivalent to a current greater than the highest of the Io> settings. n trip inhibition: press the "trip inhibition" button if the VIP30/35 test should be carried out without tripping of the circuit breaker. Circuit breaker tripping is inhibited while the trip inhibition" button is pressed, even if the tripping order results from a real fault. indicators n on: indicates that the batteries are operating. Also lights up when the battery test is carried out by pressing "battery test". n test in progress: confirms sending of the test stimulus to the VIP30/35. n trip: it lights up when the VIP30/35 sends a tripping order (whether or not the circuit breaker is inhibited). "external mitop" output It may be used to connect an auxiliary mitop designed, for instance, to stop a stop watch during operating tests. The mitop is triggered at the same time as the circuit breaker mitop. It is not inhibited by pressing the "trip inhibition" button. batteries n the batteries are normally deactivated and are automatically activated when the VAP6 is connected to the VIP30/35. They are activated in the following cases: - pressing the "battery test" button. - direct connection to a VIP3X or VIP5X relay. - connection to the adapter cord designed for testing of the VIX or VIP2X relays. n to install or change the batteries, open the unit by removing the 4 screws on the bottom of the unit. 19 7. testing of the VIP30/35 and use of the VAP6 (cont d) VAP6 test sequence The test may be carried out with or without current in the sensors. During the test operations, all the VIP30/35 settings are effective; the relay should perform in accordance with the settings. During the test, the relay remains operational and will give a tripping order in the event of a fault, unless the "trip inhibition" button is pressed. n connect the VAP6 to the "VAP6 test plug". The VAP6 batteries are activated and the "on" indicator lights up. n press the "trip inhibition" button if the test should be carried out without tripping of the circuit breaker. Fbe sure to continue pressing the "trip inhibition" button throughout the time it takes to send the stimulus. n press the "phase overcurrent" button to send the phase protection test stimulus. - continue pressing the button throughout the duration of the stimulus. - the VAP6 "test in progress" indicator lights up to confirm the sending of the stimulus to the VIP30/35 relay. - the VAP6 red "trip" indicator lights up to indicate that the relay has tripped. - the circuit breaker trips if it is not inhibited. F if the "phase overcurrent" button is held down after tripping, the VIP30/35 maintains the tripping order. This is normal operation. In that case: - the VAP6 "trip" indicator remains it. - the circuit breaker mitop is supplied by the tripping order. n press "earth fault" to test operation of the earth protection (VIP35). Use the same procedure as for the phase protection test. n disconnect the VAP6. In order to save batteries, do not leave the VAP6 connected to the relay unnecessarily.
