Features of ELA-Series 1.1 Basic Functions Load power 250 Watt Operation modes: Constant current mode, constant resistance mode Master-slave operation ext. programmable constant current mode ext. programmable constant current mode, constant power mode, constant conductance mode with option G-Module Intrinsic safety by: - Power limiting - Current limiting - Inverse polarity protection - Over voltage protection - Over temperature protection The electronic loads of the ELA 250 series are electronic controlled DC-Loads with a load power of max. 250 W. They are designed with state of the art Power-MOS-Technology and have a load voltage range of 0.35VDC to 160VDC. Wherever a DC-Load is needed, in local operation or remote controlled as a part of a complete system, the ELA250 series provides intelligent features like: minimum load voltage 0.35V 2 independent set values, each with coarse and fine control internal frequency generator 100Hz / 1kHz Load ON/OFF RCP (Remote Control Port) RCP with additional +15VDC auxiliary voltage for external circuits Local-lockout-function in conjunction with G-Module or interface INT2E buffered U- u. 4 1.3 Specific feature For optimization of load characteristics, the electronic load is equipped with automatic change of regulation parameters. Commissioning Refer to user manual before switching on the load! 2.1 Scope of delivery - 1 Electronic load - 1 Mains cord - 1 User manual After unpacking the appliance, please check: for complete delivery (compare with purchase order) for visible damages In case of visible damages or if there are loose parts inside the appliance, do not make any connections to the device and do not switch on the device. 2.2 Environmental conditions - For use in dry environment only - Temperature range 0 40 C - max. 80% rel. humidity up to 30 C, linear decreasing to 50% rel. humidity at 40 C - Altitude max. 2000m - Pollution degree 2 (no conductive pollution e.g. metal dust) 2.3 Installation The electronic load is available as: desk top appliance 19 -plug in module with 6U front panel for installation in a 19 sub rack. At installation of the electronic load, ensure the cooling airflow is not impeded. Ensure the air exhaust and intake holes at rear side and bottom of the load are free of any airflow obstructions. Avoid thermal short circuit! Use as desk top appliance Choose a place where the load wires can be made as short as possible. That means the load must be near to the unit under test, e.g. power supply or battery. The cooling air must be able to circulate to the bottom of the electronic load. This airflow must be free of obstructions. If airflow is impeded and the temperature of the heat sink exceeds max. temperature, the over temperature protection will force the load to the state Load OFF. Ensure at least 20cm free space behind the electronic load. Use as 19 plug in module Ensure a minimum vertical space of 2U between the loads. 8 2.4 Preparation of function test Presets: - Mains switch (at rear side beside the power socket) at position 0. - Mode selector at position I. - Potentiometers COARSE and FINE at position left hand stop. - Selector for signal source at position A. - Load ON/OFF selector at position OFF. Before connecting the appliance to mains please observer the relevant safety regulations (VDE 0100/0110). The set-up is in any case to be such, that energized parts cannot be touched. Protective ground connection, through the grounding conductor in the power cord, is essential for safe system operation. 2.5 Mains connection Connect the proper power cord from rear-panel mains connector to a properly wired receptacle (verified earth ground). Ensure correct voltage is supplied. The load is protected by two fuses, housed inside the mains connector. Before changing these fuses, disconnect the power cord! The load may only be opened by a skilled technician. Ensure mains cord and load wires are disconnected before opening! Never put the load in operation with enclosure opened! 2.6 Load connections The correct set-up of the load circuit is the most important precondition for safe and correct operation of any measuring set-up with an electronic load. Set up the load circuit only in de-energized state! Observe the following points in particular: Keep the load wires as short as possible. Keep the positive and negative load wire at about the same length. Keep the load wires in parallel to each other with no distance or use twisted wires. Select sufficiently large cross sections. (Current density < 2A/mm 2 Cu) Observe the operation area of the load. Avoid load voltage at load terminals when the load is switched off (mains). When using voltage or current source with no power limiting the load circuit must be equipped with a proper fuse. Never connect a load voltage with reverse polarity. If load voltage is connected in reverse polarity, an internal fuse will blow and must be replaced. Furthermore the unit under test may be damaged. 9 Never interrupt the load current by disrupting the load circuit. The thereby produced spikes may damage the load or instruments connected to the load circuit. The set-up is in any case to be such, that energized parts cannot be touched. Danger of fatal accidents from high voltages and currents! After set-up of the load circuit, protect all unisolated parts of the load circuit from being touched! 2.7 Performing a function test Establish the load circuit with load and unit under test switched off. Refer to chapter 2.5 Switch on the electronic load (Mains switch to position I ). Both displays will show Check whether the position of the mode selector is set to position I. Check whether the position of the signal source selector is set to position A. Check whether the position of all potentiometers COARSE and FINE is in position left hand stop. Switch on the power supply. The voltage display will show the actual load voltage. Set the Load-ON/OFF-Selector to position ON. Select a set point by slowly turning the potentiometer clockwise I A /R A FINE. The current display will show a load current of 0 to approx. 10% of max. load current, depending on the position of the potentiometer. With the COARSE and FINE potentiometers, any set point between 0 and max. load current can be set. Note: The load current can be set only within the operation areas of the electronic load and the power supply. When max. load power is exceeded, the load current is limited by an internal circuit. When this circuit is active, the yellow I>, P> indicator on front panel lights up. Select a set point by slowly turning the potentiometers I A /R A FINE and I A /R A Coarse. Set the Load-ON/OFF selector to position OFF. The current display will show Switch off the power supply. Switch off the electronic load (Mains switch to position 0 ). Disconnect the load wires. 10 3. Maintenance The air intake holes at the bottom of the electronic load should be cleaned periodical. Pollution e.g. by dust will reduce the airflow and cooling of the power stage. Insufficient airflow may result in overtemperature shutdown. The enclosure may only be cleaned with a dry or damp cloth. The intake and exhaust holes should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner to prevent the dust getting inside the device. The maintenance interval depends on the place of installation and cleanness of the air. Warning: Disconnect load wires and power cord before cleaning. Conductive pollution e.g. with metal dust must be avoided without fail! Conductive pollution may affect the safety and proper function of the electronic load. 4. Functions of the electronic load 4.1 Constant current mode (I-Mode) The load current is equal to the set value, independent of load voltage. 4.2 Constant resistance mode (R-Mode) The load current depends on the set value and the load voltage. The electronic load behaves like an ohmic resistance (I = U / R). 4.3 Operation with 2 set values (T) In each operation mode two independent set values are available. The active set value is selected by the signal source selector. In position A the potentiometers I A /R A FINE and I A /R A COARSE are active. In position B the potentiometers I B /R B FINE and I B /R B COARSE are active. In position T an internal generator periodically toggles between set value A and set value B. A toggle frequency of 100Hz and 1kHz can be selected. 4.4 Function Load ON/OFF In position OFF the load current always is 0A, independent of the set value. In position ON the load current depends on the operation mode and set value. 4.5 Remote operation In remote operation (RCP) only constant current mode is available. The load current depends on the control voltage at pin 7 of the remote control port (RCP). The control voltage must be within the range 0 to 10V which equates 0 to 100% of max. load current. If more operation modes are required in remote operation, an additional module is necessary (G-Module). EPS Stromversorgung GmbH Tel: +49 (0) Index 3 Page: 10

11 4.6 Protection Over voltage protection If max. load voltage is exceeded, the load current is set to 0A (equivalent Load OFF ). If the over voltage protection is active, the red U>, T> indicator on front panel lights up. Note: When exceeding the max. load voltage by more than 25%, the electronic load may be damaged! Over temperature protection If max. temperature of the internal heat sink is exceeded, the load current is set to 0A (equivalent Load OFF ). If the over voltage protection is active, the red U>, T> indicator on front panel lights up. Possible cause: - Ambient temperature to high - Impeded airflow. Refer to chapter Power limiting If max. load power is exceeded, the load current will be forced to a value within the operation area of the electronic load. The protection circuit prevents the electronic load from operation outside the safe operation area. If the power limiting circuit is active, the yellow I>, P> indicator on front panel lights up Current limiting If the set value exceeds max. load current, the load current is limited to max. load current. If the current limiting circuit is active, the yellow I>, P> indicator on front panel lights up. Possible cause: - Control voltage (RCP) to high (>10V) - Set value I max and load voltage too low Inverse polarity protection To avoid the destruction of the electronic load, a super fast fuse will break the load circuit in case applying of inverse voltage to the load terminals, when the actual load current exceeds 45A. The electronic load is not ready for use until after the replacement of the internal fuse! Warning: If inverse voltage is applied to the load terminals, the current cannot be controlled by the electronic load. Power supplies with no current limiting may be damaged because the internal fuse will not blow until the actual current exceeds 45A! Attention: Power supplies with max. current lower than 45A must be protected, e.g. by a fuse in the load circuit. EPS Stromversorgung GmbH Tel: +49 (0) Index 3 Page: 11

12 4.7 Indicators Display: Load voltage The 3-digit display shows the voltage at the power stage. This voltage equates to the voltage at the load terminals. In case of large load currents small differences may occur between voltage at load terminals and display Display: Load current The 3-digit display shows the actual load current lndicators for load status LED P>,I> (yellow) Cause: LED U>,T> (red) Cause: Indicates that the actual load current is not equal to the set value. - Power limiting circuit active - Set value I max and load voltage too low Indicates, that an internal protection circuit is active. - Overheating of the load - Over voltage EPS Stromversorgung GmbH Tel: +49 (0) Index 3 Page: 12

Modes available: Constant current Mode (I), constant resistance mode (R) and remote operation (REM). Signal source selector Selection of set value A, set value B or automatically toggle (T) between set value A and set value B. The toggle frequency depends on the position of the toggle frequency selector. (For more details refer to chapter 4.3) Toggle frequency selector Selects toggle frequency for toggle operation (T). (For more details refer to chapter 4.3) Selector Load ON/OFF Allows the user to bring the load current to 0A without change of the set value. 14 5 Remote control port (RCP) Because of noise immunity, all signal- and command lines may not exceed a total length of 3m. The load terminals are not grounded (internally not connected to case). In case of grounding the load circuit, be aware that the GND-terminals of the remote control port are internally connected to the negative load terminal. When grounding the load circuit, e.g. at positive load terminal, dangerous voltages may occur at remote control port! 5.1 Pin assignment (Remote Control Port) RCP Signal Pin 8 Analog-GND Pin 7 Control voltage 0-10V Pin 6 Load current 0-10V Pin 5 Load voltage 0-10V Pin 4 Message: Composite error Pin 3 Command: Load ON/OFF Pin 2 Digital-GND Pin 1 Auxiliary voltage +15V (max. 20mA load capacity) Pin 8 Pin RCP-Signals Analog-GND (Pin 8) Ground line for all analog signals (control voltage, actual load current, actual load voltage). This ground should only be used as return line for analog signals to avoid noise injection. For digital signals use the separate digital ground (Pin 2). Analog-GND (Pin 8) is internally connected to negative load terminal. If the control system (e.g. computer) and the load circuit are not electrically isolated, never interrupt load current by disconnecting the negative load connection! If neg. load connection is interrupted, the current will continue to flow through the analog or digital ground line and may destroy printed circuit board tracks inside the electronic load or may result in damage to the control system! Control voltage input (Pin 7) The control voltage at this pin represents the set value for remote operation. The control voltage range is 0-10V. This control voltage is active in position REM of the mode selector. Control voltage Control voltage 0V = Set value 0A 10V = Set value I max Current monitor (Pin 6) The voltage at this pin represents the actual load current. The voltage at this pin is within the range 0-10V. This monitoring signal is active in remote operation and in local operation. 15 Voltage monitor (Pin 5) The voltage at this pin represents the actual load voltage. The voltage at this pin is within the range 0-10V. This monitoring signal is active in remote operation and in local operation. Voltage 0V = Load voltage 0V Voltage 10V = Maximum load voltage (U max ) Message: composite error (Pin 4) This signal is pulled to digital ground (0V) if any internal protection circuit is active. In normal operation the voltage at this pin is approx. +15V. This error signal is active in remote operation and in local operation. This error signal is realized as open-collector output with internal 10kΩ pull-up-resistor. It has a current capacity of max. 5mA (sink). Command: Load ON/OFF (Pin 3) Equivalent with function Load ON/OFF (Chapter 2.4). This command input only is active in position REM of the mode selector. Note: This function can be controlled by applying a control voltage to this pin or by connecting pin 2 and pin 3 by a working contact of a relay. U Pin 3 > 12V U Pin 3 < 1V Load current 0A, independent of set value (Load OFF). Load current depends of operation mode and set value (Load ON). Pin 3 floating Load OFF Pin 2, Pin 3 shorted Load ON Digital-GND (Pin 2) Ground line for all digital signals (composite error, Load ON/OFF). It is recommended to use this ground line for the digital signals to avoid error and noise injection to the analog signals. Digital-GND (Pin 2) is internally connected to negative load terminal. If the control system (e.g. computer) and the load circuit are not electrically isolated, never interrupt load current by disconnecting the negative load connection! For more details refer to Analog-GND. Auxiliary voltage +15V (Pin 1) Supply voltage for external circuits. This auxiliary voltage can be loaded with max. 20mA. 16 With all units a high voltage test and a test of the protective ground system (ground bond test) is performed before shipment. Warning: Before repeating the high voltage test (primary-secondary) the correct voltage sharing has to be ensured. In case of no correct voltage sharing, the load may be seriously damaged!
